Jesus calls us to salvation (he fishes for us) and then he calls us to fish for people (to call others to salvation through faith in Christ). In this message, we look at the passages of Scripture where Jesus calls his followers to go fishing for people . . . to be disciples who make disciples.

What does it mean for Christ to live in me? What is a life of contemplation, versus doing a ‘contemplative exercise?’ In this sermon, we'll look at the spiritual discipline of contemplation.

On the eve of Independence Day, we look back to the document declaring our independence as a nation. The Declaration of Independence was written with the underlying assumption about the goodness of God, the providence of God and the dignity of humanity; the document begins and ends with dependence on God.

Contradictory to our thoughts on what if means to be independent, dependence on God brings deeper freedom. True dependence requires an intentional daily surrender of our lives to God. Are we making decisions based on God’s providence for our lives?

When Jesus ascends to heaven he does so in a human body - not something we always consider. Yet, this truth says that God values human beings more than we do! While we sometimes consider the body and spirit to be different things, the truth is that both are connected together and to fully embrace the one we must learn to embrace the other.

“Jesus loves me” is more than a sentimental statement or a well-known children’s song. The truth of Jesus love is a life-changing, transforming invitation. Love changes us from servants of Jesus to friends of Jesus with power and authority. We are called to love others as Jesus loves us. Let’s step into the invitation and reach out to other with a sacrificial love. Jesus loves me … and so I will love you.

In the sermon on the mount, Jesus flips the message of the world on its head. Jesus shares that life abundant belongs to the desperate, weary, and discouraged. Blessed are the poor in spirit. Where do you begin, or begin again, if you want to be a disciple? Not with the “successes” you have achieved according to this world, but through the mercy and grace of God.

Jesus describes himself as a Good Shepherd – one who will lay down his life for his sheep, and who knows his sheep by name. As followers of Jesus, we are called to care for one another just as a good shepherd cares for his flock. Let’s begin by being intentional about getting to know others.
