A book about faith, love, and philosophy.

The story follows college girl Marguerite as her devout Mormon faith founder against the edges of her new-found secular friends. The result is a challenging spiritual, mental, philosophical, and physical awakening that takes often unexpected turns.

First off as a freshman book I'll admit there are some rough edges to the narration. Exchanges between characters can be too story specific, lacking the discovery of natural conversation. That said there are breathtaking descriptions of scenery, and heartfelt personal admissions that only come from semi-autobiographical works; combined with the actual content of the conversations I ripped through the first half of the story as quickly as I could.

The second half of the book shifts abruptly into a journal format. I found myself missing the page turning nature of the first half. But what was exchanged for speed was made up for in depth and challenge. While I'll always remember the characters from the beginning it's the rest of the book that will stay with me for months and years to come.

Intriguing

This book was an intriguing, and sometimes painful, look at the struggle to find meaning in life, to find meaning in faith. Marguerite's inner turmoil was alternately completely relate-able, and completely frustrating to me. As I journeyed with her I wondered why she made the decisions she did. Why not ask for more help from friends and family? Why not seek professional medical help sooner? Why wait on a silent God? How can she keep having faith when she's not getting any answers? Why resign herself to a life devoid of happiness? I was both impressed with and frustrated by her tenacity.

Part 1 of the book was a great story, the characters were real and I could understand and sympathize with them. In part 2 it went from story form to diary form and I felt like it lost some of its narrative flow. I would have liked to read more about Marguerite's experiences overseas and in graduate school, especially as it was here that she came to a final resolution of the problem of faith.

Overall I would recommend this book, it's well-written, well-researched, and entertaining. It took the reader along on the journey to understand faith. I found myself pondering the role of faith in my own life and redefining and reaffirming my own core belief system.

Read the novel through its

Western, Victorian, and tapered resignations. There is depth of feeling and development of understanding in the adventures of this young woman, extant her sheltered beginnings. A philosopher's stone, a prophet's prose... There are many chuckles, blushes, and more questions upon questions which accompany the read, and linger on reflection...

Highly recommended

This story was so different but so enjoyable. Its grumpy old man George, befriending male Gen Y plus a couple of years Justin. It took a couple of chapters to get use to the writing/narration but after say 15 mins, I was glued. It was lovely to see how, although both guys are so different, enhance each other's lives.

I would certainly recommend this novel - it is gripping and keeps you on the edge of your seat! I bought this in a buy one get one free audible promotion and I am very glad that I did!

Slightly soapy thriller

What did you like best about Blood Vines? What did you like least?

The story is fast-paced and suspenseful, but the characters, including the protagonist, are a bit one-dimensional and some of the plot twists are not very credible.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting thing is the murder mystery at the centre of the story, the least interesting to me was the love story.

None of the characters really stood out to me.

Great Story

What a great book. From the first few pages I was hooked. A great cast of characters, their lives interwoven and connected by the mysterious mansion of Stoneborough. There were characters I adored and characters I loathed, and though I had a pretty good idea where the story was heading, small twists and turns kept me guessing and changing my ideas. Despite her actions, I enjoyed Jo, the main protagonist, and wanted more of her. Lucas's slow decent into madness was engrossing and Danny was vile but interesting. The ending was climactic, with elements I predicted and huge ones I didn't. Overall, this was a fantastic book, with excellent fast paced writing, and I look forward to more by Lucie Whitehouse.

Entertaining

Although this book has been compared to Donna Tartt's "The Secret History," I don't know that the comparison is a valid one. That being said, I still found "The House at Midnight" to be entertaining and enjoyable. The characters were generally easy to connect to, although I found myself overly irritated with the narrator. If you like a psychological thriller that won't make you think too much, this is a good book for you.

Just Ordered Her Other Books

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't the twists and turns in this book. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, another plot twist turned me around.

This is a great first novel and I have now ordered all her other books, which tells you how much I enjoyed this.

Loved this book

The characters were well written and I could get a real feel for the situation in which Jo found herself. The theme of love and the responsibility that comes attatched to love, along with the varying approaches to this responsibility by the characters was very well thought out and described. A very good read.

Good One!

I enjoyed it and bought more of her books.

Muy decepcionado y no precisamente por el contenido sino por la narración! Parece leído por una máquina, sin inflexiones, sin cambios de voz y sin pausas.

Just finished listening to "Love on the Big Screen!" I loved it! I loved the characters and their sweet "nerdiness!" I think everyone who reads/listens will relate to so many of the feelings and the events of high school and college and learning to deal with the opposite sex!
