Don't waste your time

Let me start by saying that I am a fan of Joe Kimball, J.A. Konrath, Jack Kilborn and whatever other names he dreams up. I have read his Jack Daniels novels and I LOVED Timecaster. This book however was awful. The plot was too ridiculous for even a scifi nerd to enjoy. The ending was the very worst. When the book ended I was actually angry that I had wasted my time on it. It was THAT bad. I normally don't get so riled up over a book however this one was a real piece of work. The gratuitous sex, the fat jokes(not funny dude),and especially the sheer stupidity of the ending - singing fruit - really?? It was all too much for me. I think if I had stopped listening to the book a couple chapters before idiotic ending I would have given it a higher rating. I did enjoy that he brought back a couple characters from his Jack Daniels series and shamelessly self promoted through the book. That cool and funny. The rest was mostly crap with a few bits of entertainment. Read it if you must but don't say I didn't warn you.

Wonderfully silly and crazy story!

We listened to this book on a long drive across the country, and we were laughing and enjoying the story as we went. Sure the plot was silly and crazy, but it's a "Joe Kimball" story, where people get punched in the groin a lot.

IT SOUNDS LIKE A BAD SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL

If you have not read the first book, then get that first. The author even admits that you will want to read the first book first.

I FOR ONE DON'T HAVE PIANIST ENVY

If you really loved the first book, then you should like this, if you only liked or did not like the first book, then READ ANOTHER F@#K%^G BOOK. This is not as good as the first. The story gets bogged down in it's complexities. You got Talon, Talon 2, Dark Talon, etc. The story it's self repeats and you go thru some of the same scenes as the first book. It was still a fun listen, Yummy returns, but she is a lot different. Harry enters about half way thru the book to bring some levity into it, I liked the Traffic-a-pied. The jokes about Windows 35 are LOL. There are some long parts, where nothing too funny or entertaining happens. As a whole I enjoyed the book, I like Kimball's style of writing and I will get the third book when it comes out.

Lawlor is a perfect match for this book.

A treat for all H. G. Wells fans.

I was intrigued by the concept that H. G. Wells might have based his novel "War of the Worlds" on real events. I expected a sort of re-telling of the story from a different viewpoint but remaining faithful to the original novel. The author surprised me, though, as he borrows from all of Wells' novels to build an entirely new story that actually has little to do with the novel (other than the characteristics of the Martians and their technology). Borrowing characters from "Island of Dr. Moreau," "Invisible Man," "First Men in the Moon," and other Wells stories, this novel, although not what I expected, was well-written and quite engaging. Also, Graeme Malcolm's narration was absolutely fabulous. Highly recommended for all fans of H. G. Wells.

A different slant on a very good story.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wasn't sure what to make of this book at first. The characters were well developed and the pace of the story was ok. I have read other Kevin J. Anderson book and sometimes he really hits the mark and other times he misses it. This book fall in between a hit and a miss. I did like the Victorian style of thinking about science. The images put forth in the book harkened back to the silent films of the turn of the century. I though the narration was good.

If you are a real fan of "War of the Worlds," this is a fun book. Otherwise, it does not stand on its own.

Don't give up on this story too soon. It gets better

An unusual take on background inspiring HGWells stories, such as War of the Worlds, first men on the moon, and The island of Doctor Moreau.

At first I though this would be an uninteresting autobiographical account of H.G., as much was factual. However, it became very exciting and interesting, incorporating many of his stories, such as The Time Machine and The Invisible Man.

Well worth persevering with.

Good to average

I really enjoyed the start of this book, but later it got bogged down in excessive detail. The references to Wells's and others' writings made me smile and were interesting but then the author started to spend too long on descriptions and not enough time on driving the story forwards. The narrator evidently didn't always check ahead as to which character was speaking and would sometimes use the wrong voices. Overall I'd rate the story as a 3.5/5, and do feel inspired to read more H G Wells and investigate the writings of T H Huxley.

What a mess, disappointing

This book is an incoherent mess. I had expectations for this book; it has all kinds of Sci-fi premises that I go for; such as bio engineering, cloning, our food supply. It also takes me to my neck of the woods, the west/ southwest, New Mexico. Main characters are women. Other main characters are local minorities.

Unfortunately the story just is very indistinct, vague, in part maybe because too many different view points are vying for expression through a number of characters, that i am trying to care for but never can do. The author does not explore the characters deeper and I am left prying to piece it together, which feels here frustrating. In other authors I can appreciate missing back story, because it is somehow implied, but not here.

It almost seems that Ziegler has gathered various themes of more successful writers and novels and mashed them together, but has not been able to create a coherent, engaging whole. That is too bad because some of his main ideas are interesting and would be worth exploring, describing. Maybe the author will write another book in this particular future and become a better writer with practice?

The narrator herself is good, but miscast for this book. She is skillful at expressing various characters, but then it's not her fault that they are so wooden and uninteresting, un sympathetic.

A fun ride through the cosmos

One Jump Ahead is the first book in an awesome series. It's got the best AI ship I've ever read about. It's fast paced and it's fun. You'll love Lobo. I just finished the latest release, No Going Back, and can't wait for the next book to come out. If you like science fiction you won't want to miss this series.

It's all just a beginning.

Despite a bit obvious and cliche parts in the beginning, the book gets better as you listen to it.

It gives you some back story about main characters and helps you understand some of their motives.

It's getting more interesting as the book progress!!

Not bad!

First of the book starts out great. A man trying desperately trying to flee the city to reach his children during the beginning stages of the Zombie apocalypse. When I say desperately I mean this poor guy is extremely desperate. The first of the book is past paced frightening and very tragic. After finding his children he heads home to see his wife only to be met by his brother. This is where the book SLOWS down. The man settles as the leader in his home town. The rest of the book focuses on the adjustment period this town and man goes through. To me it was kind of boring but I heard part 2 picks back up!

The book is well written and character development is great. Dialog could be better in some places but it could be the way the narrator reads.

I will be moving on to book 2! Worth the credit if nothing else good is out.

GREAT BOOK

I wasn't sure about this book after reading some of the reviews on another site, but I am so glad I got it. The story has a good flow and the narrator does a great job. It has ample character development. The story reminded me of Day by Day. With lots of other zombie books I find myself getting mad at the characters(and Author) for making stupid decisions just to make the story move a certain direction. This story has none of those stupid decisions and I'm looking forward to the next book.

i've read a few different zombie novels, and mad swine is somewhere close to the bottom. i think i somewhat liked it b/c it's different than the others. what i mean by different is the location. the main character lives in a suburb of chicago. can you imagine a worse place to live and try to survive in than a huge city.

the story starts as matt is at work. he's some kind of vp at a university in chicago. i was interested in how you escape and survive when you live in a suburb of one of the nation's largest cities.

everything else is typical. the infected want to eat you.

Hard-boiled detective story w/ sci fi backdrop

If you like noir tales of the Dashiell Hammett variety, and aren't afraid of a little sci fi, then I think you'll enjoy this. The sci fi setting isn't overpowering given the premise - interplanetary travel is possible, but the detective is working on a destitute planet. The poverty keeps the story grounded in pulp feel, and there's enough sci fi for the author to play with some fun scenarios.

What would have made KOP better?

Absolutely hated it. Not the performance was good, and the writing isn't bad, but the premise really, really stinks. We are to understand that the MIXED_RACE decendants of space age share-croppers live a hopeless, wretched squallid, existence on a panet so fertize that the forest has to be regularly burned, because the"Eurt-Mun do want to buy the moon-shine no-moe". Yikes......the whole world is theirs! I will not be buying book 2.

A book too short

The author goes to great effort to build a marvelous setting and interesting characters, but just as the story gets up steam it just seams to end. While the ride lasts its engrossing, just a few more chapters would have done the job.

A Very different kind of story!

Well this is a tough one. I will say it has GREAT narration. Now for the story. This story is a strange one. It's not bad just very different. I has more foul language then if it was written by Frank Zappa's evil twin. You'll laugh of 5 streight minutes at a time of constant swearing,the most foul stuff you ever heard. The story has a good plot. It does not have all good science. But it gets by. Over all not to bad not great either. But worth listing to. I'm not shore why! LOL

What a Strange and Wonderful Trip!

Would you consider the audio edition of Hell Ship to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version, though I suspect I may have lost interest as it doesn't really follow the usual storytelling conventions. But, that's okay!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hell Ship?

The absolutely insane action, strange twists and turns and unusual characters. Not a human in sight! I love scifi, but I don't like it when authors take the easy way out by having all of the aliens behave and resemble humans. This is written fiction, you can have anything, any shape, any voice, smell, customs, morals, ethics, religions...! Mr. Palmer didn't take the easy way out, not by a long shot. He doesn't let you forget for one minute that these are a varied group of aliens, many so completely different from humanity that we would scarcely recognize them if we had encountered them. Luckily we get to spend a lot of time in their heads.

What about the narratorss performance did you like?

I think that if this book were read entirely by one voice actor it would have been dull. With the addition of two others, it really kept my attention.

Over fourteen hours of strangeness, wonders, cultures, action and aliens!

Maybe it's fantasy? I don't know why fantasy and Sci Fi are often put in the same catagory because they are distinctly different genre. The author is a great writer but not a Science Fiction writer. Weird aliens and monsters don't make it Sci Fi.

New and Refreshing "Twists" for the Series.

A surprising volume in the series. The "domestic" interplay was refreshing and fun to follow. The heroes were consistent and the "super soldier" element took a surprising turn. Recommended.

Didnât really involve the 34th FIST but fairly good reading anyway

This book in the Starfist series is a bit different from the rest that I have read so far in that it does not really involve an official deployment of the 34th FIST. Not even a small detachment of marines. Instead it tells a story that plays out on the Kingdom planet after the aliens have been forced to retreat from the planet and the 34th FIST have left to deal with their losses. Okay, slight spoiler, at least one of the marine manages to get himself involved in the story but not really in any official capacity.

I have to say that I was a bit suspicious of this book since I am generally not too keen about these âaftermathâ stories but again, David Sherman & Dan Cragg managed to produce a well written book that was fun enough to read that I enjoyed it all the way. Okay, it is not one of my favorite one in the series but given the subject for the story it did surprisingly well for me.

For obvious reasons this book do not contain any of the major fighting and military campaigns, with the exception of a little bit at the end, that the other books have contained.

Horror Story with Daniel Boone

What did you like best about this story?

It was totally unexpected. And riveting. It was just a darn good horror story!

What about Marc Vietor and Eric Michael Summerer s performance did you like?

I thought both of them did an excellent job. I usually don't like books with more than one narrator, so I was skeptical, but it was appropriate that there were two narrators, since there were two timelines to the story.

Those Who Went Remain There Still is a short Southern Gothic horror novel by Cherie Priest which I listened to in audio format. The story follows two plotlines told in alternating chapters. One is excerpts from Daniel Boones Reflections Upon the Wilderness Road which he wrote while leading a group of trailblazers across Kentucky. Every night, Boone and his men are being stalked, picked off, and eaten by a huge bird-like monster.

The second plotline follows the history of Daniel Boones descendants in the rural Kentucky area where Boone met the monster. Theyre an inbred, ignorant and nasty lot thats been split into two feuding families. A couple of the family members from each side manage to escape by running away, eventually acquiring some education, and progressing to a new standard of living. Each is called home years later when the family patriarch dies and leaves a will which must be searched for in a nearby cave. Here the two plotlines converge.

Priests story is unsettling from the start when we read the first entry in Daniel Boones Reflections Upon the Wilderness Road as he describes his mens encounters with the bird monster. At first he reports only cursory images of the thing but as the story continues, we get more sensory details and it gets more frightening. At the end we meet the monster face to face and by this point Priest has complete control over our mental imagery so that everything it does, even the smallest bird-like movement of its head, is disturbing.

Not a great year...

I read and listen to a lot of short fiction. I love the genre. So much depth packed into such small packages, so much writerly skill to celebrate in that packing. I love the way it feels to be the reader as a story unfolds, explodes or morphs in my mind in only a few pages. I love the way my mind is later pulled back to ideas presented in short stories.

Not this time. All I can figure is that the editors of this anthology look for different qualities in short sci fi than I do. Listening to these stories I found my mind wandering. I didn't finish several because I just didn't care how they ended. And a few weeks after listening to this anthology, I only remember one of the stories and all I remember about it is its premise.

This is an unfair review in that way and should be taken with a grain of salt. I can't comment on individual stories, only my general takeaway. It could be that the stories I didn't finish were great, that I gave up on them too fast because other stories had disappointed me, and if I'd finished them I'd be saying, "Wow, you ROCK!" to those individual authors.

Nevertheless. My takeaway from the collection as a whole is a big fat yawn.

I think sci fi is a very difficult genre to do well in short form.
