  • The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
This is an audiobook of The Red Badge of Courage: An Episode of the American Civil War by Stephen Crane, narrated by John W. Michaels.
The Red Badge of Courage departs from traditional war novels by looking at a single persons experience throughout the war: Henry Fleming, a Union soldier, who flees from battle when things get hairy. With his shame weighing heavily on him, Henry hopes to get a war wound – a “red badge of courage”. In the end, he does end up getting a wound – but not how he expected to.
The book was met with universal praise upon its release. It’s known for its realistic portrayal of battle, as well as its mixture of naturalistic, realistic, and impressionistic prose. The novel is about a man in war, as opposed to a larger narrative on the war itself. It could, in fact, likely take place in any war. Crane did this purposely, wanting to show a “psychological portrayal of fear” that is divorced from any single context.

  • The Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum
This is an audiobook of The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, narrated by J. Hall.
Few works have captured the imagination of an entire nation as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (more commonly known as The Wizard of Oz). Immortalized in 1939s The Wizard of Oz film, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the tale of Dorothy who finds herself in the magical Land of Oz. There, she meets the Scarecrow, who says he lacks a brain and wishes to have one; the Tin Woodman, who says he lacks a heart and desires one; and the Cowardly Lion, who above all desires courage.
She meets a whole cast of other characters as well: the Good Witch of the North, the Munchkins, the Wicked Witch of the West, and, of course, Oz – who is not who Dorothy thinks he is. Throughout it all, her faithful dog, Toto is at her side.
Baum was in part inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll rejected the Victorian notion that children’s books ought to be moralized; instead, he contended that they should be fun & pleasurable to read, with pictures and a main character that children could identify with: a child, like themselves. Baum took that to heart and wrote a fun book that, in the end, was enjoyable for both children & adults.

  • Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

This is an audiobook of Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, narrated by Elizabeth Klett.

Northanger Abbey is a satire of the Gothic novels that were popular at the time. A coming-of-age story, it revolves around Catherine Morland, a fan of Gothic novels. She seems to take what she reads and applies it to her real life. The story is about her coming to realize that, while enjoyable, novels don’t always relate to daily life. Throughout the book, she comes to understand that the world is larger than her own backyard and that while seeing the good in people is a noble endeavor, at one point, one has to admit that people are not always good. Catherine is imaginative and means well, but her naivety lead her into some misunderstandings.

As with all of of Austen’s novels, the themes of society and class are ever-present. Chronologically being the first book she wrote, one can surmise that it helped establish the issues that she would tackle throughout her career as a writer. Some themes, such as the satirization of Gothic novels and the importance of reading as a way to grow, are unique to it. To the last point, reading is used a way of showing who is “good” vs who is not so good.

    • The Lair of the White Worm by Bram Stoker
This is an audiobook of The Lair of the White Worm by Bram Stoker, narrated by Betsie Bush.
The novel is in part inspired by the legend of the Lambton Worm. In the folklore, John Lambton, heir to Lambton Estate, did battle with a giant worm (or dragon; dragons are sometime called worms in folklore). The worm in question was eel-or-lamprey-like, with nine holes on either side of its slimy head. After his fight, Lambton discards the worm in a nearby well. Similarly, in The Lair of the White Worm, the worm in question lives in pit on an estate. The worm is used to dispose of murdered or killed people; once a body is thrown to it, it eats it up.

    • At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald
This is an audiobook of At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald, narrated by Mlcui.
The main character is a young, kind boy named Diamond. One night, Diamond encounters the North Wind, a eucatastrophizing figure before Tolkien coined the term in On Fairy-Stories, his seminal essay on the fairy-story as a literary form. The North Wind takes Diamond on her adventures, where Diamond sees her do great and terrible deeds – but even the bad lead to good. Theodicy – the search for the answer to why a good God permits evil – is a central topic of the story. Some consider the book to be MacDonald’s masterpiece.

Anne is 18 at the beginning of Anne of the Island and is 22 when she graduates from Redmond College, a “full-fledged B.A.”. • The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli
This is an audiobook of The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli, narrated by Clive Catterall.
Coming to power is the easy part. Retaining power is what’s really difficult. As Shakespeare wrote, “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown”. A prince has no shortage of difficulties – revolt, revolution, other monarchs, the army, the people, and many other adversarial prospects. And not everything a prince does will be received well; and even those policies that are received well by some of the populace will surely anger others. Further, just because a plan worked once does not mean it will work again. Written during a time when the Church wielded considerable power, The Prince was shocking due to the immoral suggestions Machiavelli made in order for a prince to ensure their power.
