  • 5 Signs to Identify Sexual Abuse with Sergeant Patrick Crough [Podcast]
And when discussing sexual crimes, to be sure, we need to be wise in the way we keep our little ones safe at all times and in all places. What many parents may be unaware of, some of the most unlikely among us can be the most dangerous.

Our guest today, is Investigative Police Sergeant Patrick Crough. He has over thirty years of law enforcement experience, including twenty years as a Major Crimes Investigator and Hostage Negotiator with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Rochester, New York.

He is also the author of Chronicles of a Rochester Major Crimes Detective: Confronting Evil and Pursuing Truth, and the book we discuss today, Seducers Among Our Children. He is married with three grown children and two grandchildren. Today, Patrick is in full-time ministry with Millstone Justice, a non-profit, child advocacy group. The purpose of Millstone Justice is to educate parents, family members, teachers, day care employees, and caregivers about the threats that are posed everyday by child predators.

    His website is http://www.protectingthechildren.com/.
    Signs to Identify Sexual Abuse
The proliferation of pornography has to be fueling the sick minds of the garden-variety child-molester—and spark an appetite in others who perhaps wouldn’t have given something that evil even a second thought. But, off the top of my head, I’m not recalling any scientific studies to affirm that notion—though I’d bet there are likely to be some. I’m sure our guest could clue us in on some of that. But, as a former policeman, myself—and I’ve been out of it now for over 30 years—I can tell you that if you knew everything about everyone who lived in your neighborhood, you might actually think more seriously about locking your doors and windows. We live in a crazy world, and I think we’ve been long over-due in putting together a program like the one we’re doing today. Child sexual abuse is a very real and important topic.

The truth about sexual crimes and if it is “on the rise.”

Why the Internet may be to blame for the proliferation of sexual crime.

Why voyeurism is not enough for predators.

The three groups of child sexual crimes.
What are some signs you can be aware of potential sexual abuse.
How to navigate potential sexual predators within your family.

  • How to Treat Attention Problems in Our Children with Dr. Daniel Berger [Podcast]
Millions of young kids, as well as adults, have been diagnosed and labeled with these disorders in recent decades. Attempts at treating attention problems in children and adults have resulted in many being put on medication. But how have we done at actually teaching our kids to pay attention?

Dr. Daniel Berger is an experienced pastor, counselor, and school administrator, who has authored several books on Christian counseling, practical theology, education, and the history and philosophy of the mental health construct. Currently, he oversees Alethia International Ministries (AIM) where he counsels, continues to write, and speaks around the country at various conferences and ministries. He and his wife, Oriana, have been married for 13 years, and together they have three children.

The Debate Continues: Treat Attention Problems in Our Children
Sometimes I am concerned that medical professionals excuse a quick draw method towards medication by giving people, especially our kids, labels like “ADD and ADHD.” Today, many in the mental health field are taking a second look at these so-called disorders and challenging whether they even exist at all.

I have to be honest here, I’m still scratching my head over this issue. I know, by virtue of what I do at Shepherds Hill Academy, that there are irresponsible things going on in the mental health field. I am a staunch proponent of tightening the ship on how some of these psychotropic meds are being dispensed.

I am also still a bit perplexed—especially when I think of my own inability to mentally focus in recent years—as to why some professionals in the mental health community seem to be so at odds with one another about what constitutes an actual problem in this area. Still others challenge the very existence of a problem at all. Dr. Daniel Berger and I discuss getting our kids to pay attention as we talk through the following topics:

How the book of Proverbs teaches us the importance of focus.

Why appropriate focus is a spiritual discipline as well as biological.

How hard should I challenge my child when he says “I can’t.”

How your teen can appropriately develop their brain.
The role faith plays into the development of your child.

  • Stumbling Blocks Parents Face in the Digital Age with John Rosemond [Podcast]
But, are these assessments fair and accurate? Should we not identify the obstacles parents face in today’s culture. My good friend, John Rosemond, and I discuss this today.

John is no stranger to "License to Parent." He has been a friend to myself and to the ministry of Shepherds Hill Academy for a number of years. In addition, he has been featured on our program numerous times. I’d encourage you to search our content to hear more from John Rosemond. John is a successful columnist, conference speaker, radio talk show host, and author. John is the host of "Because I Said So!" -  a nationally syndicated radio program.

    Common Stumbling Blocks for Parents
Have parents of the digital age been dealt a bad hand? While there are certainly cases of dereliction on the parent’s part. Those exceptions aside, I want to identify the challenges that the average parent faces. I particularly want to focus on the parents that claim to be followers of Christ. What unique challenges do they face as the digital age begins to take root.

John and I Identify the following:

How the experts become a stumbling block.

The reason Christian parents face the same stumbling blocks as the culture.

The role the culture-pivot of the 1960’s played in developing stumbling blocks.

How psychology has harmed parenting practices today.
How suicidal ideations have become a stumbling block for families.
The relationship between order, discipline, and the public schools.
The empowering of the kid’s right and minimizing the role of the parent.
How the phrase “That is what teens do” has misled a generation.

How the LGBT ideology has confused parents and teens.
    The misleading problem of codependency.
Minimizing the role of spiritual warfare.

  • How Brain Health Affects You and Your Children with Daniel G. Amen, M.D. [Podcast]
Did you know that by putting on this spiritual armor we’re actually affecting brain health by helping to protect, and perhaps even build, physical brain matter? Maybe you consider yourself a spiritual warrior for God and your kids, but are you also a “brain warrior?”

Daniel G. Amen, M.D. is the founder of Amen Clinics, he is a double board-certified psychiatrist, professor, and ten-time New York Times bestselling author. He is one of the world’s foremost experts on using brain-imaging tools to help optimize and treat his patients. Amen Clinics have one of the highest published success rates for patients. His research was listed as one of the Top 100 Stories in Science for 2015 by Discover magazine. In addition to being featured on The Dr. Oz Show and Dr. Phil, his work has also been featured in The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, and Men’s Health.
Do Parents Put Enough Thought Into Brain Health
All parents are concerned about their children’s physical health. And for believers, there’s an even greater concern about their spiritual health as well. However, with the exception of parents raising kids who’ve experienced some sort of brain trauma or malady from birth, “brain care,” so to speak, isn’t very often on the radar.

You don’t hear a lot of parents talking to one another about how to protect or build their kids’ brains. Certainly, concern over kids wearing helmets while riding their bikes is a big deal today. There’s also the recent controversy asking, “should kids be playing football six years out of the womb.” And of course every parent wants their kids to go to school and get good grades.

But, those things are not all that I’m talking about here. I think there are a lot of things that are systemic to today’s American culture. These things are absolutely devastating, not just to our kids’ brains, but to ours as well. I’m talking about things that the good parents of helmet-wearing, straight “A” students are often oblivious to. Let's get into detail on how good or devastating influences can affect brain health as we discuss the following topics:

How well the average parent addresses brain health.

What does it mean to have a healthy brain?

The effects of eating the standard American diet.

The effects of not guarding your mind.

Areas you should focus on when improving your brain.

Why getting a healthy brain will give you a healthy spiritual life.

  • The Special Bond Between Parent and Child with Ainsley Earhardt [Podcast]
So, if we claim to be children of God ourselves, how we conduct our affairs in the presence of our kids can either attract them toward our Creator and His love or turn them away.

Our special guest, Ainsley Earhardt is a journalist and co-host of FOX News Channel’s (FNC) Fox & Friends. She has also contributed to the Hannity show with her own segment called Ainsley Across America. Additionally, she has co-hosted Outnumbered, Fox & Friends Weekend, FOX’s All-American New Year’s Eve, and America’s News Headquarters. Today, we discuss her New York Times Best Seller Take Heart, My Child: A Mother’s Dream. She will be donating a portion of her proceeds of the book to Folds of Honor, an organization that provides scholarships and assistance to the spouses and children of fallen soldiers in service to America.
The Special Bond Between Parent and Child
I remember trying to describe to my oldest son the incredible transformation that he was about to experience as a human being—right before his first child was born. He admitted to me later that he couldn’t quite grasp what I was actually saying until virtually the moment his daughter was born. But, at that moment, all his priorities changed and his outlook did too. Then a couple of years later, he came to me with concerns that he could never love his second child as much as he did his first. And I guaranteed him—whether it was a boy or a girl—all that would go away the moment his second child was born—and it did. And then he had a third child—and it was the same thing.

Fearing that I could not love unconditionally was my biggest concern and reservation when starting Shepherds Hill Academy (SHA). But, when I finally submitted to God’s will after losing my youngest son, Asa, Beth and I felt a peace about taking students here as residents. God confirmed to me then the very same thing I was trying to confirm to my oldest son about unconditional love when SHA took its first group of kids—and in walked a boy named Asa. Beth and I both knew that it was God confirming His will, calming my fears, and equipping us for this work. You can’t make this stuff up. And we also can’t manufacture, on our own, the intuitive love that we have for our kids the moment they come into the world.

    Our Discussion with Ainsley Earhardt

Ainsley’s testimony and her special bond with her parents.
What led Ainsley to write her New York Times Best Seller, Take Heart, My Child: A Mother's Dream.

The crucial role of a father to a teenage daughter.

How to have a positive outlook on life’s trials.

How Ainsley’s faith impacts her life on Fox News.
