The hunt for the elusive mother of the bride dress was off and running, but bagging the game was not as easy as I thought it would be.

Dad’s Reading Legacy

 

Sometimes it is the small things we do that make a big impression and leave a lasting mark on others. To my Dad, reading aloud to us six kids after dinner on cold nights was such a little thing, but to me it was profound. It shaped me as a reader, writer, and taught me so much about life and people. It bonded us in ways that other things and activities did not. Those times of sitting around the dinner table and sharing and partaking of words have been my fondest memories of childhood.

Turn Off That Pressure Cooker and Get a Life

My 12th summer I suffered from canner’s fatigue when my sister, brother, Mom, and I canned an astonishing 1,243 jars of fruits and vegetable. We weren’t far into the summer when we all thought mom’s great idea was getting a bit demanding. We searched the phone book hoping to find a local chapter of Canners Anonymous, but couldn’t find one. Problem two was where to store all these jars of food. Then Mom began asking people for watermelon rinds. Something was clearly up.

Spider Dancing

 

I have a method to my madness for most things. Even spiders. Those eight-legged arachnids that every fall creep inside my warm dry house and try to re-populate my basement with their cousins, aunts, and uncles.

If I deem this spider’s time of passing is imminent, I start glancing around for the nearest shoe, book, stack of folded paper. Basically something flat to whack the spider good and hard with. My last resort is the shoe I am wearing. Somehow I cannot stomach this. The old stomp on the spider with your own foot filled shoe seems more violent. Like I am actually out to kill him. Yes, I know that is the intent, but . . .

The Irritating Robot Voice

Sometimes a quick trip to the grocery store and self-checking a cart of items turns into your worst nightmare. How quick can you say self-checkout? A lot quicker than it actually takes to argue and wrestle items past the irritating robot voice.

 

 

 

I don’t know who designed this self-checking machine, but the person had to be tone deaf. Maybe even deaf. The voice is a mixture of crabby, bossy, self-righteous, incredulous, and fingers on the chalkboard irritating. It causes grown men to cry, women to kick it, and children to wet the bed.

The Art of Spraying

Most people think spraying is easy. Little do they realize the self-control, the analytical math mind, and the sense of timing that accompany this job. It is a job not everyone should be trusted with. Anyone can spread soap bubbles on a car, but not everyone entrusted with a hose has enough self-control to resist spraying others.
