LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS
- There are five key areas where it is important to succeed: Health, Intellect, wealth, knowledge, spirituality.
- The “three simple things” to focus on in each of these areas are offensive, defensive, and strategic.
- Health: O—Exercise every day (1 hr.), D—Stretch (20 min.), S—Control your diet (and, specifically, drink 10 glasses of water per day). TOTAL TIME: ~1.5 hrs.
- Intellect: O—Learn one new thing a day (10 min.), D—Get better at one thing a day (10 min.), S—Let your brain think strategically (10 min.). TOTAL TIME: 0.5 hrs.
- Wealth: O—Find new clients (1 hr.), D—Take care of existing clients (1 hr.), S—Project out the next five years (1 hr.). TOTAL TIME: 3 hrs.
- Relationships: O—Listen to your significant other (10 min.), D—Speak to your significant other (10 min.), S—Intimacy (10 min.). TOTAL TIME: 0.5 hrs.
- Spirituality: O—Get out of bed and move every muscle/joint (10 min.), D—Turn on your five senses (10 min.), S—Declare/pray/meditate (10 min.). TOTAL TIME: 0.5 hrs.
- Everybody has already mastered at least one area. The acquisition of the others is the goal.
- It’s generally much more comfortable for people to be defensive.
- The spiritual area has the greatest benefit (a factor of 13x), and the relationships area has the second greatest benefit (a factor of 7x). If you are going to spend an hour of the day growing, focusing on the spiritual and relational are the most beneficial.
- Leading in chaos is being able to identify one particular thing you can do right now that is immediate and effective.
- Great leaders are really good and making chaotic situations simple.
- Failure is the key path to success. Most people quit on themselves way too early.
- Right now, you have the ability to own the three simple things: offensive, defensive, and strategic.
- Acquire the six-hour day (three simple things in five areas) and make it non-negotiable.
QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION
- What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? All leaders need mentors.
- Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Available, connected, and on-point.
- What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? Are my goals measurable, not only by myself but by other people?
- What book would you recommend to leaders? Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
- If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Your health is equally important as your business.
- As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” Neither—“What?” is the most important question. “Why?” denotes that there is a problem and an emotional reaction (which is not always effective to worry about). What pins down something that you and your people can do together.
