The recent walkway that collapsed on Friday morning at Hoerskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark where 4 pupils were killed and many other severely injured puts the spotlight on infrastructure and maintenance in schools. Farmers lose hundreds of thousands of rands due to the drought and this is not a problem that is unique to South Africa. The agricultural sector in its entirety is always hardest hit by abnormal weather patterns. (Farmers may have to spend more money on crop and livestock up keep; businesses that depend on farming, like companies that make tractors and food, may lose business when drought damages crops or livestock; and we might even find ourselves with certain outbreak like that of the foot-and-mouth disease in Limpopo). Are there mechanisms in place to support farmers during such tough times? When compared to our international counterparts, do South African farmers get enough support from the government?
