Brad Holmes is a distinguished figure in the South African music industry, known for his extensive experience and versatility as a producer, promoter, and former venue owner. His career gained significant momentum following the advent of democracy in South Africa in the early 1990s, a pivotal moment that opened new avenues for artistic expression and cultural collaboration in the country.

In 1994, Holmes founded the Bassline Jazz Club, which quickly became a cornerstone for live music in Johannesburg. According to "Last Night at The Bassline" by David B. Coplan and Oscar Gutierrez, published by Jacana Media in 2017, the Bassline was a 200-seat venue that offered a platform for both legendary and emerging musicians. This club not only showcased a diverse range of musical talent but also served as a communal space where South Africans from all walks of life could unite and celebrate their shared cultural heritage.

Rorisang Sechele is a skilled and qualified vocalist, songwriter, recording and performing artist; based in Pretoria. Her musical development started in the Jacaranda Children’s Choir whereafter she attended Pro Arte Alphen Park classically trained and accomplished her music studies with distinction. She heeded the call of music once more when she went on to study Jazz and Popular Music at the Tshwane University of Technology, graduating Cum Laude in 2020.

In addition to having made it into the highly coveted Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band in 2021 under the conducting guidance of Dr Nduduzo Makhatini, Rorisang has performed alongside Lisette Spinnler, Nthabiseng Motsepe, and Zenzi Makeba-Lee. As a member of The Anchored Quartet, conducted by Ofentse Pitse, Rorisang has worked with Sun-EL Musician, Simmy, Msaki, and Ami Faku to name a few.

Musicia Suthukazi Arosi passed away this past week, after her battle with cancer. The multi-talented artist and activist was batting stage 4 of cancer and early this year she was admitted and was undergoing chemotheraphy and asked industry friends and colleagues for donations towards her medical bill.

The Eastern Cape born singer has made a significant impact in the music industry, particularly known for her powerful vocal prowess and captivating performances. She began her career as a backup singer, honing her skills and gaining experience working with renowned artists. This early phase of her career allowed her to collaborate with notable figures in South African music, including the legendary Letta Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya.

Letta Mbulu is celebrated for her contributions to South African music and her role in popularising traditional sounds alongside contemporary styles. Working alongside her, Arosi gained insights into the industry and developed her own musical style. She was also part of Sabela when they released hit song “Abelungu Abamnyama”, then from these experiences, Suthukazi eventually stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist, and released her album titled ‘Ubuntu’ in 2001.

Her exhibition titled "Of Spirit and Song" showcases her deep connection to the jazz scene, highlighting the interplay between music and the emotive power it carries.

In "Of Spirit and Song," Pakade presents a series of photographs that depict not only the artists themselves but also the cultural backdrop of jazz in South Africa. The exhibition emphasizes the spiritual and emotional journey that both musicians and audiences experience during performances. Through her lens, Pakade captures the intensity, passion, and improvisational nature of jazz, reflecting its roots in personal and collective stories.

After a decade-long hiatus, the celebrated South African musician Phinda Mtya-Matlala is poised to make a powerful comeback with the launch of her new EP, 10 YEARS - A DECADE, on February 28, 2025, at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg. This highly anticipated event marks not only the release of her latest work but also a poignant tribute to the transformative journey she has undergone since the passing of her husband.

Phinda’s absence from the music scene for the past ten years has been deeply felt by her fans and the broader artistic community. Her husband’s untimely departure in 2015 left a profound impact on her life, prompting her to step back and reassess her artistic vision and personal identity. During this period, Phinda engaged in profound introspection, channelling her grief into creative expression that would eventually culminate in her new EP.

He was the son of the late Dr. Phillip Tabane, a legendary figure in the Malombo music genre, which blends traditional African sounds with modern influences. Dr. Phillip Tabane was celebrated for his innovative approach to music, and he played a pivotal role in popularizing Malombo and showcasing South African music on the international stage.

Following in his father's footsteps, Thabang Tabane carried on the family legacy, infusing his musical style with the rich cultural heritage of South Africa. He was recognized for his exceptional drumming skills and his ability to capture the essence of African rhythms. Thabang participated in various musical projects and collaborations, honoring his father's influence while also carving out his own identity in the music world.Thabang Tabane was not only a skilled drummer but also a storyteller through his music, often reflecting the experiences and histories of his people. His untimely passing marked a significant loss for the music community, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire future generations of musicians.
