I do the research so you don't have to! Join us as we explore the relationship of Maslow's hierarchy of needs and recreation selection. How the participant approaches the activity is often more important than the activity itself. Many needs can be met through the same activity, depending on the participant's attitude, effort, and goals.
Recreation Example: basketball
Physiological needs met through exercise
Safety needs meet through existing with a clear set of rules and boundaries
Love and belongingness meet through teammate, coach, and crowd support
Self-esteem meet through wins, accomplishments, significant contributions
Self-actualization met though exertion of maximum effort to reach fullest potential, pushing beyond previous skill level or stats, possibly reaching a FLOW state of ease and "in the zone"
