  • Episode # 327: Dreams of Yesterday

Dan was not sleepy, but sought some related refreshment in Threes Brewing Dreams of Yesterday, a pilsner with oyster shells.

    Threes Brewing Dreams of Yesterday

STYLE: Pilsner with oyster shellsINGREDIENTS: German Pilsner Malt and oyster shellsCOLLABORATION: Bearded Iris BrewingABV: 4.5%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s can, website, and Untappd.

    Appearance

Light yellow in color with a nice, white head.

    Aroma

Brininess with bread and biscuit notes.

    Taste

Minerality with a continuation of the notes from the aroma.

    Mouthfeel

Perfect amount of carbonation accentuated the crisp mouthfeel and body.

    Overall

Mad tasty for sure. Fish and chips pairing or used in the batter would slay with this, though you could probably go with any fish or seafood for sure.

  • Episode # 326: Contour Interval

During his visit to Wild East, Dan sampled and then promptly added the foeder-aged solera saison, Contour Interval ∞, to his take-away order.

Wild East Brewing Company Contour Interval ∞

STYLE: Foeder-aged Solera SaisonINGREDIENTS: All New York State malt and hopsABV: 6.1%IBU: 0AVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s can, website, and Untappd.

    Appearance

Light/straw yellow in color and a little hazy with a sizeable, fluffy, white head.

    Aroma

Fruity and funky right off the bat with a blend of pineapple and lemon with some oak character hitting along with a little spice.

    Taste

Lemon-based acidity hits first with a muddled pineapple juice note hitting after followed by additional complex earthy and funk notes.

    Mouthfeel

The canned version presented a little bit more carbonation and provided a spritz element beyond the draft. Really enjoyed the weight and the mouthfeel, being not too light or heavy while gliding across the palate.

    Overall

I love that we get to have these amazing expressions of New York agriculture/terroir through the various different beers from NY State Farm Breweries. This is an aperitif beer in my mind, but it would probably slay with some Long Island oysters or ceviche for sure.

Thank you so much to Joel for joining me on a mini-crawl to Wild East and other locations!

Dan drops back in on a favorite from local NYC’s Torch and Crown Brewing Company – Their cream ale Utility.

STYLE: Cream AleABV: 5.5%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s can, website, and Untappd.

    Appearance

Super light/straw yellow in color with a big, large-bubbled head.

    Aroma

Intense grainy note with some earthiness/herbality/minerality from the hops.

    Taste

Similar notes on the palate with some corniness/husk mixed in with some minerality.

    Mouthfeel

This is meant for easy-drinking, so it’s light and crisp on the palate making you go back for more sips.

    Overall

I am imagining watching a game at a bar with pizza or other local fare. Many would be consumed for sure!

  • Episode # 324: All or Nothing

Dan goes for All or Nothing via this Threes Brewing West Coast IPA offering of a unique blend of hops and American malt.

    Threes Brewing All or Nothing

STYLE: West Coast IPAINGREDIENTS: American 2-Row, Vienna, and Dextrin Malt; Simcoe, Mosaic, Strata, Cascade, and Columbus hopsABV: 6.8%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s can, website, and Untappd.

    Appearance

Light gold with a tinge of orange.

    Aroma

A lot of citrus, followed by dank with a faint hint of pine.

    Taste

Sweet tangerine/clementine leads off with the dank note hitting the mid-palate with a hint of pine on the finish. The flavors all meld together.

    Mouthfeel

Soft carbonation with a supple mouthfeel and medium body.

    Overall

All or Nothing is fairly easy drinking, but I would be careful not to have too many (wink wink). This could go with most bar food like Thai wings, tacos, and select pizzas with exotic toppings.

  • Episode # 323: Temperance

While visiting Wild East, Dan saw and immediately ordered Temperance, a dark mild, which he also brought back home for some malty goodness.

    Wild East Brewing Company Temperance

STYLE: Dark MildABV: 3.5%IBU: 17AVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s can, website, and Untappd.

    Appearance

Deep, dark amber to light brown with a tan head.

    Aroma

Toasty bread with a hint of roastiness and some light toffee notes.

    Taste

A malty blanket for your palate, with many of the bread-related notes continuing with toffee coming back on the finish.

    Mouthfeel

Despite being a sub-4% beer, it has a good body/weight that it brings to the mouthfeel.

    Overall

I think I could have a few of these at any time of day, save for being outside in the heat or sun. Food-wise, my mind went for British flavors or Shepherd’s Pie, but perhaps also a simple steak or some lamb dishes would slay and maybe even some coffee cake.

  • Episode # 322: Stoop Beer

Dan seeks some summertime refreshment with local NYC’s Torch and Crown Brewing Company’s Stoop Beer – Mosaic.

Torch and Crown Brewing Company Stoop Beer – Mosaic

STYLE: American Adjunct LagerINGREDIENTS: Mosaic dry-hopABV: 5.2%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s can, website, and Untappd.

    Appearance

Straw yellow/light gold in color, with a bit of haze and a white, fluffy head.

    Aroma

Clean, with a little graininess/corn from the malt bill meeting the citrus and a little bit of dankness from the hops.

    Taste

Citrus, herbal, and earthy hop presence meet the graininess that.

    Mouthfeel

Light on the palate but also mouth-coating with soft carbonation gliding over the tongue.

    Overall

This is definitely for outdoor enjoyment, regardless if it’s a picnic, courtyard, or patio. I had chicken salad for lunch earlier, so that was on the brain, but a classic hot dog and other street food would be tasty with this too

  • Episode # 321: Super Vliet

Dan meets (and tastes) Threes Brewing Vliet’s edgier big brother, Super Vliet, as part of a recent lager binge.

    Threes Brewing Super Vliet

STYLE: Can-conditioned German-style PilsnerINGREDIENTS: German Pilsner Malt; Czech Saaz and German Spalt Select hopsABV: 5.1%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s can, website, and Untappd.

    Appearance

Yellow/golden in color with a sizable, white, fluffy head.

    Aroma

Hop resin was the first note to hit my nose with floral and herbal essences following.

    Taste

Earthy and herbal hops hit through the mid-palate with some floral notes on the finish.

    Mouthfeel

Crisp and dry like Vliet, with a bit more weight and mouth-coating feel.

    Overall

This definitely feels like an edgier big brother of Vliet, with the hop presence and mouthfeel being distinctly different though both are at the same ABV. As a German-style, that type of fare would still work well, but try pizza, wings or other bar food.

  • Episode # 320: Subtle Reference

Care of a pick-up following his visit to Wild East, Dan cracks open Subtle Reference, a foeder-aged Czech-style Pilsner collaboration.

Wild East Brewing Company Subtle Reference

STYLE: Foeder-aged Czech-style PilsnerINGREDIENTS: Saaz hopsABV: 5.3%IBU: 40AVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)COLLABORATION: Threes BrewingStats above taken from the brewery’s can, website, and Untappd.

    Appearance

Golden in color with quarter-inch, persistent, white head.

    Aroma

Complex, with wildflower-like nose mixed with fruit and a little wood/oak note.

    Taste

Hops present more earthy/herbal on the mid-palate and finish, with the malt providing great balance of graininess.

    Mouthfeel

Refreshing and extremely dry, with the time in the foeder adding weight and texture to the mouthfeel to accompany the zippy carbonation.

    Overall

This is the kind of beer that I would love to have a few of during a hang in a beer hall or garden before moving to bigger styles. Pairing-wise, the dryness of the beer could go a long way with many cuisines like German, but I was having hot dogs that night, so it spoke to me.

  • Episode # 319: Look No Further

Dan pops open a new Suarez Family Brewery pale ale, Look No Further, as part of his last shipment until the fall.

STYLE: American Pale AleINGREDIENTS: American malt and hopsABV: 4.8%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16oz Cans, Draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the brewery’s can and Untappd.

    Appearance

Slightly hazy, yellow-orange in color, with mixed-size bubbles on the white head.

    Aroma

Herbal and mineral-like up front, with a faint hop resin note.

    Taste

The minerality meets an herbal/tea-like note on the mid-palate, with the malt/hops giving off an orange marmalade vibe.

    Mouthfeel

Carbonation is soft, with supple but rounded mouthfeel and a good weight.

    Overall

I can definitely see drinking a number of these on a patio for a barbecue before the grill is fired up. Pairing-wise, I’d go for a country-style chicken salad though it could go with a lot of lighter preparations of poultry.

Super clear, light, and golden with a beautiful white head.

    Mouthfeel

Crisp, very dry, and refreshing with a weight appropriate to style.

    Overall

Drink this in mass quantity for sure. I’m all over German beer hall fare with this. I definitely need to have some beers from Halfway Crooks at some point.
