What is a Cigar?

What impression do you associate cigars with?

Is it a wise older man reflecting on his past on a porch?

Or father sharing a moment with the sons?

Do you find it odd that a cigar is one of the most presented items in all major life events and celebrations but is also one of the best companions with a whisky during a heartbreak?

Mark Twain, one of the most famous American writers, described his love for cigars in his famous quote “If heaven has no cigars, I shall not go there.”

Other greats, such as Winston Churchill, was never shy about his passion; when once asked why cigar was so special to him, he replied,

“Smoking cigars is like falling in love. First, you are attracted by its shape; you stay for its flavor, and you must always remember never, never to let the flame go out!"

How can a rolled bundle of dried and fermented tobacco leaves made to be smoked become essential to our lifestyles and history?

With this question in mind, I am happy to share that recently, I had the fortune to be invited by Joy and Grace from NYU Stern Executive MBA New Media Marketing to participate in a project featuring Cigar Aficionado as a guest speaker to share some fundamentals about cigar and the fascination of this mysterious world to some.

Have you ever heard a saying,

This statement may be said over million times in million different ways, but it is undeniable that it has become more relevant in the business world today. We can connect much further and more effectively through technologies and social platforms in this day and age. A job seeker can easily expand the network and catch recruiters’ eyes through a presentable LinkedIn profile. An aspiring individual will be able to find the right mentors through Facebook Groups. If you search for ways to connect to a particular group that dedicates to a cause, a simple search online can put you right through. However, as convenient as it seems, it is hard to overlook the fact that certain social clubs remained hidden from the public’s eyes and major social networks that are both cherished and endorsed by some of the finest elites in the business world.

Here it goes again.” You felt a sharp pain in your stomach as you started your daily hour commute to work. You started your day by waking up with cold sweats long before your alarm sounds. Everything you eat has become tasteless recently. Activities and gatherings that use to inspire no longer interest you. All you think about is the long stressful workday ahead. You already imagine a long line of unsatisfied customers waiting to complain as you have severe short staffs that your senior management refuses to address. The job that you use to enjoy has become simply miserable. All your aspirations have been forgotten as promises made to you during recruiting were nothing but empty. You asked yourself, “What happened? How did I end up like this? Why can’t I feel positive? How do I overcome this anxiety?”

You just received another resignation letter from one of the employees in your division. This is the fourth resignation within a span of 7 months. Your company has been rolling out a variety of measures to target the struggle of retentions. Measures like pre-hiring tests, mandatory diversity training, constant modification towards KPIs, and even more funding toward the ERGs, but none of them seems to remedy constant turnovers. You asked yourself, “How come people just keep leaving? Why doesn’t the company know how to deal with turnover issues? Why aren’t the upper management address these losses of resources? Why can’t our leaders recognize people as competitive advantages?”

It has almost been a week in the new year of 2021. The same old anxiety and stress have slowly replaced the excitement, aspiration, and positivity from new year's eve. You began to fall off of your fitness routine. Your job is still stressful without any end in sight. All the news outlets are still reporting only about the pandemic and the recent political turmoil. You began to ask yourself, “Why hasn’t the new year bring the changes expected? Where are the new year's spirits and excitement? Where are the positivities? How do I start this year successfully and change for the better?”

Welcome to episode 56 "3 Keys to Launch Into New Year With Positivity” / The Pick of the Week – Freakshow of Michael David Winery

It is ten days till Christmas, and you already notice the difference in the atmosphere. What used to be the happiest season of the year seems a lot grimmer this time around. You turned on your local news, all you hear are political turmoil, the failing economy, and the frightening on-going pandemic. With all the negativities, you wonder how anyone can look positively toward the new year? Just when you are about to give up, suddenly you see lights popping up all over the dark work. These lights are shine by heroes who give themselves up for the good of others. These are heroes that continue to remind us that darkness can be beaten.
