How to Have FUN in your Homeschool

I first was introduced to Mary Willson through IG Reels. Her Reels are so much fun and encouraging to Homeschoolers! Mary has been a homeschooling Mom for over a decade and loves to provide helpful information to fellow homechoolers, particularly families with homeschooling teens.

So, I reached out to Mary to see if she’d be willing to talk with me about fun and laughing as we homeschool. Laugher really is the best medicine, and honestly an important life skill to teach our kids.

Mary confessed that as an Ennegram 7, Fun comes very naturally to her. For instance, when her oldest hit Jr High, she didn’t want to do Literature studies so much anymore. So, Mary got together with some fellow homeschoolers and planned a once a month book party. The first book they studied was the Hunger Games, so she dressed up as Effie, they had themed food and decorations and many years later the book studies are still going strong! In fact, Mary still leads book clubs online!

Why a Morning Basket

Pam Barnhill joins me on today’s podcast to talk about how to manage your life while homeschooling

Pam, Jamie Martin and Colleen Kessler have all joined forces to create a program called, Homeschooling with Purpose

Which is great, because it gives homeschoolers the tools they need to manage all of their lives, not just the educational piece. Like Pam says, manage the laundry- it’s never a surprise.

Pam is also probably best known for Your Morning Basket. Pam draws a distinction between Unit Studies and Morning Baskets and says Morning Baskets are when they cover everything from memory work to Internet Safety and are distinctly different than a unit study.

Some of the Barnhill’s favorite Morning baskets have focused on the Election, Finance and Folk Songs.

Pam uses a Trello Board to manage their Morning Baskets.

Pam is also a big proponent of Memory work, and learning memory work by songs and hymns.

The Wonder of Foreign Language

How to Heal from Bullying

Today we are talking with Candice Duggar, the mastermind behind Bullied, Broken, Redeemed. Teaching our kids how to navigate the online world, keeping themselves emotionally and physically safe is going to be a necessary life skill, as the online world is going to continue to expand and grow; many of our kids may find themselves working in the online space.

Candice share the journey of bullying in their own family and how that changed the course of her family and life- from working with Fortune 100 Companies to Homeschooling Momma and the creator of Bullied, Broken, Redeemed.

The program builds in Executive Functioning and Soft Skills and Non-Verbal Communication Skills

Of kids who will be bullied, 90% don’t tell their parents and 70% don’t tell anyone.

Most bullying takes place after 10 p.m. at night. Parents, collect your kid’s cell phones at night, turn off the Wi-Fi.

Give kids a “safe” word and develop a family policy about how to help your kids out of unsafe circumstances.

Begin talking to your kids sooner than later about safety on-line and cyberbullying. Kids as young as 2-5 years old are playing online games, which means kids are getting bullied at younger and younger ages.

We are meant to be in community, but we are not meant to be in a community of a millon people! The online world encourages shallowness; as Chrsitians we want our kids to grow in wisdom and discernment. This will take intentionality as parents!

Candice has created a fantastic program that addresses these issues and more and we are going to be offering this class through True North Homeschool Academy: Digital Leadership.

This course should be a must- have on your list for students 7th grade and up.

Tols for Struggling Learners  Part 2 picks up where we left off with author and SPED Advocate, Cindy LaJoy. You might remember Cindy from a previous episode where we talked about the Soft Skills of Work Ethic. Cindy spent the pandemic busy as ever, learning many new videography skills, working on a graduate degree and co-authoring a book. Along with Natalie Vecchio, Blazing New Homeschool Trails: Educating and launching Teens with Developmental Disabilities

Cindy and her husband have adopted 5 kids, now young adults from Eastern Europe and has a fantastic story of hope for other Moms homeschooling non-traditional learners. Her five kids, some of whom were adopted as older children who did not speak English and were illiterate have over 25 diagnosis between them and yet, as young adults, they have gone on to college, entrepreneurship, owning an award winning business and hiring other developmentally challenged adults. Cindy is also the amazing homeschooling Momma behind Blue Collar Homeschooling and the Facebook page and group, Blue Collar Homeschooling.

Cindy has spent the last decade and a half searching out appropriate curriculum, therapies and realistic opportunities for her non-traditional students, as well as helping them develop realistic life skills that have allowed them to not only manage and cope but thrive and become leaders in their own right.

How do you celebrate Independence Day? We enjoy great friends, good food, target practice, and of course fireworks! We also make time- after the food and before the fireworks- to enjoy listening to my husband read outload the Declaration of Indepedence!

What is the difference between the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence?

Take a look at our nation’s past history of Independence Day Celebrations and you’ll see that reading the Declaration of Independence was an important part of American history and that having the Declaration memorized – learned by heart– was also an expectation.

The Declaration of Independence reiterates the point and purpose of civil government: that all men, created equal, have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
