What Are Christians Actually Waiting For? (Philippians 3:20–21)

What is the true object of Christian hope?

In Philippians 3:20–21, Paul writes that "our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ." What does it mean to eagerly wait for Christ?

By considering the historical setting of Philippi as a Roman colony, we discover that Christian hope is not ultimately centered on escaping this world or even on receiving glorified bodies. At its heart, our hope is a Person. We eagerly wait to see—and to be with—Jesus Christ.

Most Christians think of heaven as the place they hope to go someday. But in Philippians 3, Paul says something even more surprising. He doesn't simply say heaven is our destination. He says, "Our citizenship is in heaven."

That one sentence changes the way we think about identity, discipleship, hope, and everyday life. Citizens of heaven still live in this world, but they no longer allow this world to define them. Their loyalties, values, and future are shaped by the kingdom to which they already belong because they belong to Christ.
