  • Statements of Faith, Scripture and God. (258)
For the sake of new listeners, and others who may want to know, we talk about some fundamental beliefs we hold on our Christian worldview. Drawing from our denominational statements, Nathan reads from the beliefs of the American Baptist Association. to compare, Keith presents similar articles from the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, developer by the Southern Baptist Convention. .

we feel that having a good theological grasp on the authority of scripture, and who God is is critical to all the other articles of faith.

we stop short of an in depth view of the trinity, and possibly more could be said on applying proper interpretation of scripture the goal was to keep the show on the short side, so watch for more content like this in the future.

  • Return of Confused Christian 1 Reconciled. (257)
An audio drama short we produced about 3 years ago. It only had 3 episodes, but there were more waiting in the wings, with a few extra scripts standing by.

Targeted towards kids, and offering a devotional concept, this episode is on being reconciled, and learning to forgive one another. Scripture reference: Colossians 3:12-15)

Our confused cast members learn the importance of being a godly peacemaker and resolving personal conflicts. They also try to understand what is involved in genuine reconciliation; They may have some room to grow, but I think they learned to pursue genuine reconciliation.

What do you think? How did we do in this pilot episode? Should we return to it, or just keep the project buried away?

    "Used with permission from Microsoft."

    Things to consider this week:

How will you make reconciliation a priority in your life?
What kind of commitment will you make to live in peace today?

    Behind the Scenes:

In this pilot episode, the voices and characters are still being rounded out. The concept is to present a devotional thought,, wrapped in a setting of kids doing regular, daily stuff. Going to Sunday school, helping in the neighborhood, playing, being mischievous at times, but always learning through the filter of the Bible and a Christian viewpoint. They get confused over words or ideas, sometimes for the humor of it, and sometimes to clarify or emphasize a point.

In the early shows, the characters don't have names. Just Narrator, little kid, and big kid. Help us out. If you think this is a project we ought to resurrect and continue, drop us a line and tell us. You can also offer to Do cover art for the series. I won't turn you down in considering what you think the characters look like, or the world they live in. i'd also like to hear from listeners: What should they be named? Maybe we could run a poll, or a contest.

  • Holy Spirit 3 Leading the Church. (256).
Featuring information gleaned from the book, "I Believe in the Holy Spirit" by Michael Green, copyright 1975.

    Review:

    * Holy Spirit in the old testament was temporary and sporadic to achieve God's purpose.
    * From Bethlehem to Pentecost. The Holy Spirit was wrapped up in Jesus life and was still temporary when applied to others.
    * Since Pentecost. The power of the Holy Spirit is applied to the church as well as individuals on a permanent basis.

Today, Keith examines What is happening "Since Pentecost".

1 The Mission of the Holy Spirit

    * Create quality of life. Unite believers in fellowship.
    * To equip believers for mission.
    * The comforter doesn't come to make comfortable, but to equip.
    * Not an internal gift to be quietly kept inside church doors.

    2. The Era of the Spirit Begins

    * Gospels mention testimony given to individuals (Mark 13:9-13). Equipping to heal (Matthew 10). Also to go, make, disciples in Jesus power. (Matthew 28:18-20). The Holy Spirit is still given in sporadic, and temporary ways. Jesus is definitely central to the attention of the Holy Spirit, but it's the same spirit who equips Jesus, who equips the apostles.
    * Paul claims individual believers are a priestly service, sanctified by the Holy Spirit, and the credit goes to Christ (Romans 15:16-18).

    3. Beginning at Jerusalem

    * Jesus life linked with Holy Spirit, and Jerusalem. Right up to resurrection account, the coming of the Holy Spirit is foreshadowed.
    * Jesus work is final with the crucifixion. Jesus returning in power to gods right Hand.
    * Acts 2 raises the curtain on the church. Where the Holy Spirit, and the apostles witness marks the age of church (Acts 1:8).
    * Spreading from Jerusalem, but also to the gentiles. The Holy Spirit initiating the spread along the way.

    * Peter is inspired (Acts 4:8 ff)

    * Inspires teaching Samaritans, and a Eunick , (Acts 8:4-8, Acts 8:26-44).
    * Moves at the same time in both Peter and Cornelius (Acts 10:1-33).

    5. The Spirit initiates Mission

    * Mission is not organized by humans, or churches. The apostles were quiet, until the Holy Spirit moved. The church didn't leave Jerusalem, until the Spirit led Peter and Paul. The Holy Spirit moved, even if it took scattering through persecution. The Church is only effective when following the spirit.

    6. The Spirit universalizes Mission

    * John's prediction is fulfilled. the fiery baptism of the Holy Spirit. Tongues of fire and rushing wind,
    * Joel's prophecy fulfilled. Spirit comes on all flesh. Men, women, the young, and the old.
    * The purpose: To equip for mission.

    * Pentecost is the first fruit offering. First fruit of spirit as well. 3000 added in one day.
    * 14 nations were present (Acts 2:5-11).

    7, Testimony

    * When church officials are elected, it facilitates administering the word to the individual (Acts 6:1-7).
    * Steven testifies, and is killed (Acts 7:54-60).
    * When men and women flee from Jerusalem by the persecution, they spread the word (Acts 8:1-3).

    * Apostles and individuals are witnesses through the Holy Spirit who Is given to the obedient.
    * Witness is not silent.

    8. The Spirit enlivens the Word

    * "Word" is closely related with the definition of ""Spirit," wind, or breath). You can't form words without breath and intellect.

    * Believers preach (proclaim) the word (Acts 8:4).
    * They were Gripped (occupied) by the word (Acts 18: 5).
    * New believers heard the word of the lord (Acts 19: 10).

  • Unexpected Hope, John 5:1-18. (255 exposed 13)
Digging deep into John 5:1-18 to examine the historic nature of the passage, as well as the theological significance.

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

An Unknown time has past since we last saw Jesus healing in Galilee. He has traveled from Jerusalem, and the Passover feast, to Galilee, and is now back in Jerusalem. In short, the feast is unknown, but if it's the Passover, it could be as much as a year that has passed.

2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.

The location of the pool, near the sheep gate has been known for years but recent archaeology has been able to confirm it. The other important thing of note is the name of the pool means house of olives, or house of healing.

3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.

4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
    KJV

Verse 4 is missing from manuscripts before the 400's AD, and isn't in most modern bibles. It's not that people are tampering with scriptures, but the King James translators put it in, when it wasn't originally there. It was likely added to offer a reason why the waters stirred. In later manuscripts, where the verse does appear, there are lots of variance in how verse 4 should read.

No doubt, many sick folks gathered for healing. The word for invalid, or impotent is one where we get the word strengthless.

5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?"

38 years in bed. This man must have been thin, weak, frail, ridden with bed sores. Possibly elderly. After years of discouragement, his will may also have been broken. Was Jesus also offering to heal his will, his spirits? With such a long time in bed, even if he hadn't spent the entire time waiting near the pool, he certainly would have had plenty of folks who knew him, and could attest to his sickly condition.

At any rate, Jesus saw him, and asked an absurd question. Do you want to be healed? Who wouldn't want to be healed?

7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me."

The man described his plight. He believed his healing would come from being put into the water. As a disabled person, he had to rely on others. At their convenience, not his. he couldn't move under his own power. He had to rely on others who didn't have to suffer his constant troubles, and could come and go as they pleased. He was always bumped to the end of the line, so to speak, by others more abled. His hope was gone, and he was in despair.

8 Jesus said to him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk."

What is missing in this picture? Did the man ask for healing, or help to the water? No.

Did Jesus ask what the man might want from him, or about faith? No.

Jesus saw him. And commanded. Get up, take up, walk.

It was all on Jesus. The man already had Jesus attention. He supplied the physical healing, and the healing of the will.

9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath,
