  • The Crosswalk Devotional: A Daily Devotional Chris... - Pursue Righteousness and Kindness

In Pursue Righteousness and Kindness, Whitney Hopler reflects on Proverbs 21:21 and reveals how righteousness and kindness are designed to work hand in hand in the life of a believer. Too often, we separate the two—valuing truth over grace or compassion over conviction—but Scripture reminds us that real holiness comes from their balance. True righteousness isn’t rigid, and true kindness isn’t weak; together, they mirror the heart of Jesus, who perfectly embodied both truth and love in every word and action.

    Highlights

    • Proverbs 21:21 connects righteousness and kindness as virtues meant to be pursued together.

    • Righteousness without kindness can lead to self-righteousness and harshness.

    • Kindness without righteousness can turn into people-pleasing and compromise.

    • Jesus modeled perfect balance—He stood firmly for truth while showing compassion to sinners.

    • Pursuing both virtues leads to spiritual growth, deeper relationships, and the fullness of life God promises.

    • Living with both conviction and compassion points others toward God’s truth and love.

    Pursue Righteousness and Kindness
    By: Whitney Hopler

    Bible Reading:
“Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor.” – Proverbs 21:21, ESV

Where I work, at George Mason University, we honor people from throughout our university community as “Kindness Ambassadors” on World Kindness Day each November. Our Kindness Ambassadors are students, faculty, or staff members who have been nominated for the honor by people who appreciate their kindness. Once they’re honored, they serve as ambassadors for the importance of spreading kindness every day. People who others recognize as being especially kind inspire many others to pursue kindness in their own lives. In the process, we often see that the same people who put kindness into action also stand up for what’s right. Kindness is an important part of living a righteous life.

  • Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer to Cast Your Cares Upon the Lord

Worry can often feel like an uninvited guest that refuses to leave — overwhelming our thoughts and stealing our peace. In our daily prayer and devotional, Emily Rose Massey writes about how she lived in that space, battling anxiety and panic attacks that left her feeling helpless and alone. But through her journey of faith, she discovered the powerful truth of 1 Peter 5:7: God invites us to cast every care — every anxious thought — upon Him because He genuinely cares for us.

Even as believers, we’re not immune to fear or mental struggles. Yet God doesn’t condemn us for them — He meets us there. When we choose to fix our minds on His Word and His character, He replaces panic with peace and worry with rest. The more we anchor our thoughts in Scripture, the stronger our trust in His faithfulness becomes.

Whatever anxiety you’re facing today, remember: you are not alone, and you don’t have to carry it. The Lord who calms storms can calm the one inside your heart.

    Today's Bible Reading:
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7, NIV

    Takeaway Truths

    • God invites us to cast every anxiety and care upon Him because He loves us deeply.

    • Anxiety doesn’t make us weak — it makes us human and reminds us of our need for God’s peace.

    • Focusing on God’s Word anchors our hearts and renews our minds with truth.

    Let’s Pray

    Heavenly Father,

Thank You for caring about every detail of my life. When worry fills my mind, help me turn to You in faith and prayer. Remind me that You are sovereign, loving, and in control. Teach me to cast my cares upon You, trusting that You will sustain me.

Replace my anxiety with Your peace and my fear with confidence in Your promises. Help me rest in Your presence and remember that You hold me — and the entire world — in Your hands.

    In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  • Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - When You're Carrying Too Much

In the American South, people say certain phrases that sound spiritual. A good example is, “God will never give you more than you can handle.” As I studied and read the Bible for myself, I realized this doesn’t exist in Scripture. In fact, it says the opposite.

As our evening prayer and devotional remind us, God hasn’t called us to live a life we could do on our own. The Bible speaks clearly about the insufficiency of our own works (Isaiah 64:8, Ephesians 2:8-9). And yet, God commissions us to follow the example of God in the flesh, living heaven on earth. Therefore, he calls us to a life and mission we’re totally unable to “handle.” Not in our own strength, at least.

Which is why the Father gives us the Spirit of the Son to live like the Son. We couldn’t do it otherwise.

The Bible also contains numerous accounts of God allowing people to experience situations where only he could deliver them: Israel at the Red Sea, David before Goliath, Daniel in the lion’s den, and more. Scripture provides these examples to encourage us to live by faith and grace, not by our ability (Hebrews 11).

It shouldn’t surprise us, then, when God allows us to face a situation where we’ll only survive if we rely upon him. In fact, James tells us to rejoice when we find ourselves in these trials, since it increases our faith (James 1:2-4). Paul promises God’s help when we’re tempted beyond our ability, saying the Lord will provide a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13).

In reality, the phrase should be, “God will never give us more than HE can handle.” Living by faith in God, empowered by the indwelling Holy Spirit, nothing is impossible for God (Luke 1:37).

Most of us are experiencing such trials and overwhelming burdens right now. But God hasn’t called us to carry these burdens. Instead, he calls us to let him “handle them,” empowering us to stay faithful while he works for salvation and deliverance on our behalf. In this way, we learn how to rely more upon his strength instead of our own, watching him do the impossible in our lives.

    TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.” -  Psalm 68:19

    YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

    Heavenly Father,
I confess my weakness and inability to handle life on my own, especially the trials I face. Thank you for calling me to a mission beyond my power, so I can learn to rely upon yours. Fill me with your Spirit to live like Jesus, trust you in difficult times, and rejoice as my faith grows. Carry my burdens, fight my battles, and work for my deliverance. Nothing is impossible for you, and I rest in our power today.
    In Jesus’ name,
    Amen.

    THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

    1. What is a situation you face right now that feels impossible to “handle”?

    2. What is one of your favorite biblical narratives where God delivered someone from an impossible situation?

    3. What are the ways you could rely upon God’s Spirit to help you show love, compassion, and peace in the situation you currently face?

  • The Crosswalk Devotional: A Daily Devotional Chris... - Even if I Can't Hear You

Lauren Fletcher offers a deeply personal reflection on faith amid silence and struggle, grounded in 1 Thessalonians 5:17—“Never stop praying.” Through seasons of mental health battles, loss, and uncertainty, Lauren discovered a profound truth: even when we can’t hear God, He still hears us. This devotional reminds believers that prayer isn’t about perfect words or constant clarity—it’s about trust in a faithful God who listens, comforts, and moves on our behalf, even in the quiet.

    Highlights

    • God hears every prayer, even when we can’t sense His presence or voice.

    • Our past wounds may resurface, but God uses them to bring healing and intimacy with Him.

    • Prayer doesn’t have to be long or eloquent—sometimes, a simple “Help me, Lord” is enough.

    • The Holy Spirit and Jesus Himself intercede for us when we can’t find the words (Romans 8, John 17).

    • Faith grows not in certainty, but in persistence—continuing to pray and believe when life feels silent.

Even if I Can’t Hear You

    By Lauren Fletcher

    Bible Reading:

    “Never stop praying.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:17

A few years ago, I was on a family trip. I was going through a hard time personally, including difficulty at work and post-traumatic stress disorder. My mental and spiritual health were going through a challenging season. It was also having an impact on my relationships.

I didn’t know that the trauma of my past could come back to affect me in the present. I had wounds from childhood and young adulthood, ways I had handled difficult circumstances that were not the healthiest, though I did the best I could at the time.

I remember one day that was particularly hard. I was struggling with an obsessive fear, and I just got to the end of myself. I remember staring out the car window, the breeze blowing, and watching the trees pass by. I heard God so clearly — I wanted to help you then. Tears falling, He touched my heart. I asked, God, will you help me now?

As the trip continued and I faced battles with my mental health, I tried to turn to God. I knew He wanted to help me, and he was helping me.

Months later, I lost my job. I was at home and struggling with PTSD again. I had days where I was confused and a

  • Your Daily Prayer - A Prayer to Shine God's Light This Halloween

Halloween often stirs tension for believers — a holiday steeped in fear, darkness, and controversy. As our daily prayer and devotional note, some choose to avoid it altogether, while others seek creative ways to redeem it. In this devotional, Alicia Searl challenges us to look at this season differently: not as a night to hide our faith but as an opportunity to shine God’s light in the darkness.

Jesus never avoided places or people marked by fear or sin. He faced darkness with courage, truth, and prayer — relying on His Father’s strength and authority. As followers of Christ, we too are called to stand firm in faith and reflect His light in a broken world.

This Halloween, instead of turning off the porch light, what if we opened our doors in love and hospitality? Whether through a kind smile, a word of encouragement, or a small gesture that points to Jesus, we can show our neighbors the light of Christ. Let this be the night we live out Matthew 5:14–16 — radiating joy, truth, and grace for all to see.

    Today's Bible Reading:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14–16

    Takeaway Truths

    • Jesus calls us to be the light of the world — especially when darkness surrounds us.

    • We can approach Halloween as a time for outreach, not avoidance.

    • God’s Spirit equips us to love, serve, and shine brightly for His glory.

    Let’s Pray

    Faithful Father,

Thank You for being our eternal source of light and love. As this Halloween approaches, fill us with Your Spirit so that we can reflect Your truth and grace. Help us to open our homes and hearts to our neighbors, showing compassion and kindness that point to You.

Protect our families and communities from harm and fear. May Your light shine through us in every conversation, every smile, and every act of love — so others may see You and glorify Your name.

    In Jesus’ name, Amen.

    Related Scriptures

    • John 1:5 — “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

    • Ephesians 5:8 — “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”
