The Best Medicine
By Megan J. Conner
Bible Reading:
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Prov. 17:22 (NIV)
Proverbs is one of the most interesting books in the Bible. Often referenced for “one-off” quotes like this, but, in some cases, ignored as a work of wisdom in its entirety. It seems as if most of us aren’t really sure what to do with the Book of Proverbs, so we simply skim over the content or only digest it in small doses of daily scripture reading.
I have had the true privilege of editing and consulting for a beautiful Christian author who is incredibly passionate about the works of Solomon, specifically Ecclesiastes and his contributions to the Book of Proverbs. Her work and message have transformed my entire perspective on the value of this ancient wisdom, especially in light of the eternal nuggets of truth that it offers us. Today’s scripture is one of these prized nuggets.
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Prov. 17:22 (NIV)
The first part of this quotable quip could be a cute bookmark or slogan on a coffee cup. Perhaps you have run across one at a bookstore or boutique. However, the latter part of the passage hits hard. The contrast of these two paradigms is so stark that it is actually startling. They are extremes at opposite ends, but I sense that is exactly what the author was aiming for. Why? Because that is how strongly the position of our hearts can influence our overall mental, spiritual, and even physical states.
When you face challenges, disappointments, or hardships of any kind, it is very easy to become overwhelmed by negativity. Especially if the struggles you are facing are serious or life-altering. There is a strong pu
Fear and anxiety can feel overwhelming, especially in seasons when uncertainty presses in. As our daily prayer and devotional remind us, the psalmist reminds us that God is not distant or indifferent—He is our shield, our refuge, and our covering.
Amanda shares a personal story of repeating the phrase “God protects me like a shield” in a dark, fearful moment. That simple truth became a lifeline when fear threatened to take over. Psalm 91:4 gives us a powerful picture of God’s nearness—like a parent bird sheltering its young beneath protective wings, our Father covers us in His love and strength.
Romans 8:31 affirms this reality: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” When we face anxiety, fear, or uncertainty, we can lean into the truth that God’s presence is bigger than the darkness. His protection extends over our families, our homes, our work, and our hearts.
No matter what storms surround us, we are never unprotected. God’s shield is not fragile—it is steadfast, faithful, and unshakable.
Today's Bible Reading:
"He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler." – Psalm 91:4 (ESV)
Key Takeaways
God is our shield and refuge, covering us in His protection (Psalm 91:4).
Fear may whisper that we are alone, but God’s Word declares that His presence surrounds us.
Romans 8:31 reminds us that nothing can ultimately prevail against those who belong to Him.
When anxiety rises, we can replace fearful thoughts with the truth of Scripture.
Let’s Pray Together
Dear Lord, thank You for covering me with Your protective shield. When fear threatens to overwhelm me, remind me that You are with me, that Your love and faithfulness are stronger than any darkness. Guard my family, my heart, and my mind. Replace my anxious thoughts with Your peace, and let my life bring glory to Your name. Amen.

Life is full of struggles—grief, illness, financial stress, and broken relationships. But as our evening prayer and scripture remind us, even in hardship, God offers something deeper than fleeting happiness: His joy.
Unlike worldly happiness, which rises and falls with our circumstances, the joy of the Lord is eternal, constant, and unshakable. It doesn’t erase our challenges, but it transforms the way we endure them. James urged believers to “consider it pure joy” when facing trials, and Peter reminded us that salvation fills us with an “inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter 1:6-9). Even Paul encouraged us to set our minds “on things above” (Colossians 3:2), anchoring our hearts beyond today’s troubles.
Choosing joy doesn’t mean ignoring pain—it means leaning on the Spirit who sustains us through it. Sometimes joy is a daily decision, a lifeline we grab when the world feels overwhelming. And when we cling to it, joy becomes our strength.
Tonight’s Scripture: Nehemiah 8:10
“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Your Nightly Prayer
Father,
Thank You for the strength and joy You freely give. Even when my circumstances feel heavy, remind me that Your joy is always available, sustaining me moment by moment. Help me seize it, trust it, and hold it tight as my lifeline in times of struggle.
Amen.
Three Things to Meditate Upon
Think about a time you allowed your child (or someone you love) to struggle because you knew the lesson would make them stronger. How does this picture help you trust God in your struggles?
When you feel like you’re at the end of your rope, remember: Christ is the knot holding you secure.
Reflect on John 15:1–11. Just as pruning helps a plant produce more fruit, God uses challenges to grow us—and promises that His joy will be complete in us.
Calls to Action

“Shame is first and foremost not a thing that begins with me thinking a certain thing about myself. It begins first as a thing that I feel literally in my body.”
That’s how Dr. Curt Thompson reframed shame in our incredible conversation—and I think he'll probably do the same for you, too. Curt is a psychiatrist, author, and speaker who has shaped the conversation around shame, vulnerability, and the stories we tell ourselves. In this episode, we talk about why addicts often feel trapped in cycles of shame, how vulnerability heals what hiding cannot, and why our deepest longings can only be met when we’re seen, soothed, safe, and secure.
This conversation weaves together neuroscience, theology, psychology, and pastoral wisdom. Curt unpacks why shame isolates, how addicts can actually become addicted to shame itself, and why bearing our wounds may be the most powerful witness of all.
If you've struggled with shame related to who you are, who you were, or what you've done, please listen to this episode. You won't regret it.
We explore:
—Why shame starts in the body, not the mind
—The connection between shame and addiction
—Why we sometimes become addicted to shame itself
—How storytelling helps us make sense of pain
—The difference between godly grief and toxic shame
—Why vulnerability is central to healing
—The role of wounds in the Gospel and why Jesus models them
—The four core needs: seen, soothed, safe, secure
—How vulnerability allows others to feel known and loved
—Why the Christian story reframes shame into redemption

Today’s Bible Verse:
"You have searched me, Lord, and you know me." — Psalm 139:1
Psalm 139:1 opens one of the most intimate passages in Scripture, reminding us that God knows us better than we know ourselves. His knowledge isn’t cold or distant—it’s personal, loving, and purposeful. To be fully known by God is both humbling and deeply comforting.

With all of the end-of-the-world predictions that have come and gone over the years, I wanted to take some time to explore the Scriptures and early church fathers' teachings to see if the idea of the "rapture" was even Biblical! Let's talk about it and dive into its history as a very recent theology.
