  • Collective Soul's Ed Roland Celebrates 30 Years with Tour and Double LP Recorded at Elvis' Palm Springs Estate
It’s been 30 years since Georgia-born band Collective Soul stepped onto the noisy ‘90s rock scene. Their hard-hitting guitar riffs, introspective lyrics, and, of course, frontman Ed Roland’s gritty yet soulful vocals solidified their sound in the post-grunge era. To celebrate three decades of music, the guys are on the road with old friends Hootie & the Blowfish and Edwin McCain for the Summer Camp with Trucks Tour. They’ve also released a double LP called Here To Eternity that they recorded at Elvis Presley’s Palm Springs estate, making them the first band ever to do that since Elvis himself lived there. We caught up with Roland from his home in Atlanta to hear all about it. This is a LifeMinute with Collective Soul’s Ed Roland.

  • Living Colour's Corey Glover on Latest Music with New Band Sonic Universe
He’s the powerhouse voice behind multi-platinum, two-time Grammy Award-winning group Living Colour, who shook up the ‘80s music scene with poignant lyrics and a creative fusion of funk, jazz, metal, and rock. Billboard even named him one of their “The 50 Greatest Rock Lead Singers of All Time.” All the while, Glover has stayed busy pursuing solo music projects and stretching his acting chops on stage and screen. For his latest work, he teamed up with guitarist Mike Orlando of Adrenaline Mob to form Sonic Universe, alongside drummer Taykwuan Jackson and bassist Booker King. The singer is living proof that you never need to stay in one box. The sound is super hard and heavy, and Glover’s undeniable vocals are as strong as ever. This week, two legendary music groups, The Commodores and The Pointer Sisters, announced their summer tour, "An Evening of Icons." With a combined legacy that spans across decades with more than 100 million albums sold, 20 No. 1 hits, and 10 Top 10 albums, these iconic artists are set to take audiences on a journey through the very best of funk, soul, R&B, and pop with support from special guests, The Spinners. The first tour leg kicks off on July 26 in Oxon Hill, Maryland, before wrapping in Primm, Nevada on November 30. Get tickets at LiveNation.com. We caught up with Ruth Pointer, the last surviving original group member, who told us all about it. Last week, Ruth sat down with LifeMinute editor-in-chief Joann Butler to reminisce about their humble beginnings, honing their formal vocal training in their father’s church to their whirlwind worldwide fame, securing a place in pop music history, with countless hits, from Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire” to “He’s So Shy,” “Slow Hand,” “Automatic,” “Neutron Dance,” “Jump for My Love” and of course the anthem for happiness, “I’m So Excited.” In 1975, the quartet won their first Grammy Award for a country-western tune, “Fairytale.” As a result, the sisters became the first black female group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. The “King” himself, Elvis Presley, recorded their song on his last studio album. In recent years, the group has performed with some of the greatest symphony orchestras in the world, including San Francisco, Jacksonville, Atlanta’s Symphony Orchestra, and the renowned Boston Pops. Ruth Pointer continues to perform the music of The Pointer Sisters all over the globe with her daughter and granddaughter. Check out more on thepointersisters.com.

  • Musician Steve Conte’s Latest: The Concrete Jangle, a 10-Track Labor of Love Featuring His Famous Friends and Family
Renowned New York City guitarist and singer-songwriter Steve Conte (New York Dolls, Michael Monroe) is back with his latest release, The Concrete Jangle, on Stevie Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records. The new album includes 10 tracks of what Conte describes as the 60s meets 80s power pop about truth versus misinformation, entitlement, boredom, addiction and loss, and love and lust, of which half is co-written with Andy Partridge of XTC fame, who also happens to be one of Conte's musical heroes. The lead single "We Like It" is a who's who of rockers that all contribute their unique voices to the backing vocals, including Marshall Crenshaw, Steve Lillywhite (Ultravox), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople), Simon Kirke (Bad Company), Marc Broussard, Palmyra Delran, and The Sopranos' Michael Imperioli. Conte plays a multitude of guitars and other instruments and brings a bunch more of his famous friends and musical talents in on the action. Co-producer Andrew Hollander plays piano and Mellotron, while keyboard whiz Rob Schwimmer adds an authentic 1960s Ondioline as well as Theremin and synthesizer sounds; trumpets by Chris Anderson, cello by Mark Stewart, and drums by Prairie Prince (The Tubes, XTC, Todd Rundgren), Thommy Price (Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Mink DeVille), and Brian Delaney (New York Dolls). Even brother John plays bass, and his two sons, Zia and Baz, sing backing vocals. This latest project is clearly a labor of love. Conte stopped by the LifeMinute TV Studios in Times Square recently to discuss the new album and enthrall us with a history of his varied musical background, which includes, most famously, his stint as the new lead guitarist for the reformed New York Dolls in 2004 with original members David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain, and Arthur "Killer" Kane.
