The grace of God through Jesus and nothing else. That is the good news of our salvation. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are made right with God and set free from the slavery of sin and death. But good news is often hard to believe – it can sound too good to be true - and we can quickly find ourselves looking to other “good” things to find the security and freedom we are offered by gospel.

When did you first hear and understand the gospel? Who told you about it? What difference has it made in your life?

The churches in Galatia were being led to believe that the grace of Christ was not enough and that they had to do more than just receive the grace of Jesus. Has there ever been a time in your life where you felt like you had to do more to be acceptable to God?

Read John 1:12, John 3:16, and Ephesians 2:8-9. What is the gospel?

There is no shortage of resources claiming to help us live full lives. Yet, despite the easy access of self-help information, how many of us would honestly describe our lives as full? Why doesn’t information automatically translate into transformation? This weekend, we’ll begin a discussion on how God uses the power of our habits to redirect our lives in the direction of true fullness.

The good news that an angel shared with shepherds over 2000 years ago is the good news that we celebrate every year at Christmas. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that this good news is not just for us to keep to ourselves, but it’s for all the people. If we really understand the good news of Jesus Christ, then we’ll understand that it’s good news to be shared.

Peace. It is something we all long for, something we especially anticipate with the coming of Christmas. Yet, peace is elusive, especially with the coming of Christmas. With so much to do, this time of year when we expect to experience peace can often be filled with anxiety and stress. Jesus came to bring peace on earth, but his arrival was surrounded by turmoil and strife. How can we find the peace Jesus came to bring in the midst of a troubled and turbulent world?

Fear paralyzes. It catches us off guard. Fear seeks to write a story that robs us of hope and joy. This is why God so often reminds us, “Don’t be afraid.” That first Christmas, shepherds were awestruck at the angelic announcement of a Savior. But they were also terrified. Like the shepherds, we’re prone to fear especially when we have good reason to be afraid. But God is fond of replacing our fear with joy and the reassurance of His great love.

One of the last things Jesus told his disciples was that they should love one another the way he loved them. It sounds really good, and it is. But how did Jesus love his disciples, and what does that mean for how we love others? Great things happen when we love.

How do you know you love something?

On a scale of 1-10, how loving are you? Explain your evaluation.

Typically, we serve when we are made aware of a need. However, we can easily go through life without ever seeing the people who need love and kindness right in front of us. But when we intentionally and prayerfully resist the myriad of distractions and reach out to people in need, things happen when we serve. God’s Spirit works through us to bring out results we can and some we can’t see.

It seems like money is an obsession in our culture. Whether it’s lottery winners or superstars with giant contracts, many people are fascinated by those who “have it all.” Our view of money says a lot about us. And God’s view of money says a lot about God. While money itself might be a neutral thing, it can unleash a power either for destruction or for immense good. When we’re generous in sharing our resources, wonderful things can happen.

Why does our culture seem to be so obsessed with money? Why are some people generous in sharing their money and possessions while others are less so? Would you describe yourself as a generous person? Why or why not?

The foundational scripture reference for our Be Rich emphasis is found in 1 Timothy 6:18. Take a moment to evaluate each component of Paul’s advice to Timothy. What could happen in and through our church if we really embraced the content of this verse?

Describe the feelings you might have when you share your resources and do good for someone else. In what ways does your generosity reflect the heart of God?
