The parable of the prodigal son, told fresh, exposes a younger son who wished his father dead, squandered everything, and hit rock bottom feeding pigs. Sometimes God lets us reach rock bottom so we discover he is the rock at the bottom. When the son returns, the father runs, an indecent act in that culture, and restores him with the best robe, the family ring, and sandals, then kills the fatted calf to throw a party. Heaven celebrates when the lost are found. The message refuses to stop there. The older brother, picturing the Pharisees and sometimes us, is angry at grace. Its warnings: no one is too far gone, celebrate when people come to Jesus, and never forget what it is to be lost.

In Luke 5, friends carry a paralyzed man to Jesus, and when the crowd blocks the door, they tear open the roof and lower him through. Their audacious, urgent faith is the heart of this message. When Jesus saw their faith, he forgave and healed the man, addressing his deeper spiritual need before the physical one. The teaching argues that our faith does not save others, but it can carry them to the One who does. It calls the church to be people who will wreck the roof: starting each day expecting an opportunity, willing to risk a Plan B when Plan A fails, praying daily for the one, and willing to set aside personal preference and tradition to put people in front of Jesus.

In Luke 7, an uninvited woman of the town crashes a Pharisee's dinner, weeping at Jesus' feet, drying them with her hair, and pouring out an alabaster jar of costly perfume. Simon recoils; Jesus receives her. Through the shortest of parables, Jesus draws the principle: those forgiven much love much. Simon could see everyone's sin but his own and so retreated from sinners, while Jesus invited them into a relationship that offered forgiveness. The teaching reframes worship as emptying the jar, pouring our whole existence, relationships, finances, dreams, into Jesus and his kingdom. It closes with a warning not to become Simon, whose self-righteousness made him forget what it is to be lost.

In Luke 9, three men are drawn to Jesus, and each has something in the way. To the first, captivated by celebrity, Jesus warns the road is one of sacrifice, not comfort. To the second, Jesus exposes a fear of what others will think. To the third, a fear of his own past. The image of gripping the plow comes from hard, agrarian labor. Following Jesus is not a life of ease but counter-cultural, sweaty work. We are not saved by works, but a saved life puts in the work because the harvest is plentiful and the workers are few. The message closes with practical applications: make your life available to God, obey the Spirit's prompting, do life with people unlike you, and walk through hard times alongside others.

In Matthew 10, Jesus tells the apostles to shake the dust from their feet when a town will not receive the message. The phrase, like washing one's hands, meant moving on, and it is often misunderstood. This message argues the point is not permission to quit but a call to be relentless in finding people receptive to the gospel. Not everyone will be ready; some are antagonistic, some resistant, some apathetic. Rejection is not a verdict on the witness. The heart of the teaching is that relationships are the key. Rather than bullhorn evangelism, it commends inviting non-Christians into ordinary life so they can see a transformed life and, in time, hear us proclaim what the Lord has done.

At the center of the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 6:1-18 confronts the gap between appearance and reality. This message argues that the popular call to simply be your true self collides with Scripture, where the unaided self is governed by the flesh; authenticity is possible only with Christ at the center, as Galatians 2:20 describes. Jesus names three marks of a life lived authentically before God: giving to the needy, prayer, and fasting. In each, the recurring phrase is when , not if — these are assumed byproducts of genuine apprenticeship — and the recurring danger is performing them as theater for an audience. The application works through the Lord's Prayer line by line and offers an inventory of inauthentic patterns: denying sin, inviting constant noise, drifting toward idols. Closing a difficult year, this message answers the question many were asking: where was God? The answer is found in his promises. Scripture contains thousands of promises from God to people, and unlike the promises people make to God, every one God makes he keeps. Anchored in 2 Peter 1, the teaching walks through seven promises Christians can rely on: God supplies every need, his grace is sufficient, he will never leave us, he will have the last word, all things work for good, evil will not prevail, and ultimate victory is ours. Borrowing Spurgeon's framing, it argues that God's promises exceed all precedent, imitation, expectation, and expression, giving reason for hope as a new chapter begins.

Opening a series on the church's core values, this message sits with Jesus and the disciples in John 15 , where he calls himself the true vine. Once we know the Christmas story, what now? The magi of Matthew 2 model the answer. Gentile scholars from the east, likely modern-day Iraq, they were watching Old Testament prophecy and longing for the King while God's own scholars missed him. The Spirit, the Scriptures, and a miraculous star led them to Jesus, and nothing, not distance, danger, nor a murderous Herod, kept them away. They recognized Jesus as King while Herod saw only a child. Their gifts revealed who they understood him to be: gold for a king, frankincense for a priest, and myrrh for one who would die. The closing question is the message's burden: to what lengths will we go to worship the King, and will we give him our best?

Why did Jesus have to come at all, and as a helpless child into a cruel world? The Christmas story is about gifts, plural, and this message unwraps three of them. The first is everlasting life: salvation we could never earn, already accomplished, awaiting only our response. The second is abundant life now, life lived full to overflowing as salt and light that change their environment. The third, often misunderstood, is a holy life, the daily relationship in which God makes us more like his Son. Drawing on John 3:16 and Matthew 5, the teaching warns against treating Jesus as merely a ticket out of judgment, urging instead that we open every gift he came to give.
