October 27 Jon Kyl: The Workhorse Arizona Won’t See Again (Audio)
Chris and Sean spend this episode remembering the life and legacy of former Arizona Senator Jon Kyl after attending his memorial service in Phoenix.
For both of them, Kyl was far more than a senator they admired from afar. He was a mentor, a teacher, and an example of what public service could look like when preparation, principle, humility, and hard work mattered more than attention or political celebrity.
They share personal stories from their early careers — including the time Kyl took the trouble to mark up a young staffer’s memo in red, the hours he spent helping people prepare for meetings and build their careers, and the remarkable way he remembered personal details about people years later. Those small moments reflected something much bigger about the way Kyl treated the people around him.
The conversation also turns to Kyl’s enormous impact on Arizona and Washington. From water and land policy to healthcare, the courts, Supreme Court confirmations, and his role as Senate Republican Whip, Kyl was the rare politician who seemed to know the details of an issue better than almost anyone else in the room. Small samples. Big headlines. How much are the polls actually telling us?
With Election Day just 12 days away, Chris and Sean break down the battle for the Senate—and why Sean sees “blue rivers” running through individual races instead of a blue wave sweeping the country.
First, they tackle the polling problem: how much confidence should you put in a narrow lead or a dramatic shift among a tiny slice of voters? Sample size matters, but so do who answers the survey and who actually shows up to vote. A precise-looking number can hide a lot of uncertainty.
Then comes a Senate map that scrambles the usual red-state, blue-state assumptions. Sean predicts Democrats will flip North Carolina and hold Georgia, while Republicans could flip New Hampshire and hold Maine. Can candidate strength and local dynamics outweigh the national mood? With Republicans holding 53 Senate seats, Democrats need a net gain of four to take control—making the difference between a pickup and a hold critical.
Chris and Sean also work through Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and, of course, Texas: where the races stand, where surprises could emerge, and whether Democratic momentum adds up to a majority.

With less than three weeks until Election Day, Chris and Sean return to Light Beer | Dark Money for a deep dive into the polls, predictions, and pivotal races that could determine the balance of power in Washington and across the country.

They’re the same age. They grew up in small Arizona towns. And one of them leads an organization that sued the other.
Sean Noble sits down with Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes for a candid, surprisingly personal conversation on Light Beer Dark Money. They’ve taken different political paths, but share a connection to Arizona—and a belief that disagreeing shouldn’t mean we stop talking.
Fontes recalls what pushed him into politics: the hours-long lines during Arizona’s 2016 presidential preference election and the haunting story of a voter struck and killed by a car after casting his ballot.
Then there’s 2020. Biden won Maricopa County by roughly 40,000 votes. Fontes lost his own reelection by fewer than 5,000. Sean asks the obvious question: If you’re supposedly stealing an election, wouldn’t you remember to give yourself the win?
From there, they tackle something bigger than either party: why America works. The ability to settle our differences at the ballot box and transfer power peacefully creates the stability that allows businesses to grow, universities to thrive, and people to build a future. Power comes from the people—not a family bloodline or whoever commands the biggest army.
