Before the first Mother's Day was established in the United States in 1914, as advocated by Anna Jarvis, a Unitarian woman by the name of Julia Ward Howe (yes, the woman who penned The Battle Hymn of the Republic) had introduced the idea of an international day of peace via a Mothers' Day proclamation approximately 36 years earlier.
