Today we look at Ephesians 5 and what it says about Marriage, including one of the spiciest verses in Scripture about Wives submitting to their husbands.

1. Marriage is Good - It's God’s idea and therefore a good gift. Despite our experience with marriage, God’s design has not changed. As Christians, we are called not to abandon marriage but to redeem it and show the world its beauty and power.

2. There’s a Mission to Your Marriage - Marriage is more than companionship; it actually points to Christ and the Church. The way a husband & wife love and relate to one another should give the world a picture of how Christ loves His people.

3. Prioritise Your Marriage - “He shall leave his father and mother...” Your spouse (your new family) must become a priority. Work, hobbies, friends, parents, phones and ministry cannot continually come first. Marriage is like a garden: when neglected, things die.

4. Oneness is the Purpose of Marriage - Marriage is not ultimately about happiness but oneness. Oneness does not happen automatically. We need to turn toward one another, talk, laugh, be vulnerable, touch, spend meaningful time together and keep pursuing one another. Connection leads to intimacy, and drift happens easily.

5. Marriage Has a God-Given Structure - Men and women are equal but not equivalent. God designed them with complementary strengths. Biblical submission is not inferiority, silence or permission for abuse. It is a willing posture of respect toward a husband’s responsibility to lead. For husbands, leadership means taking responsibility and following Christ’s example. Biblical headship is serving through leadership.

6. Jesus is the Power for Marriage - Better communication and date nights can help, but Jesus is the power for your marriage. When husband and wife are both submitted and united to Christ, their marriage becomes a cord of three strands that is not easily broken.
