Show Notes: News Lucas Oil Raceway “Parks Tower” is being torn down for a rebuild. The iconic square 4 story build was built in 1983. Demolition of the Parks Tower at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park takes place on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, in Indianapolis. The raceway, which began in 1958, was built on a 267-acre farm, by 15 local businessman with the idea of creating a 15-turn, 2.5 mile road course. The drag strip was added as an afterthought. The facilities held its first event in 1960. Roland “ The Flying Hawaiian” Leong passed away on December 29, 2023 at the age of 78.

Roland started his top fuel career in 1964, but crashed on one of his first runs. Coming back in 1965 he hired Don Prudhomme to drive and in 65, and 66 won the Winter and U.S. nationals back to back. In 69’ Roland abandoned his dragster for a funny car. 70-80s Roland campaigned a variety of “Hawaiian” funny cars. 
In 1991, Leong once again won the US Nationals at Indianapolis, this time in Funny Car Eliminator, and with Jim White driving. Later, at the Chief Nationals in Dallas, Texas, his "Hawaiian Punch" Funny Car was the first in the class to break the 290-mph speed mark.
After a brief break from the sport, Roland again reappeared in 2009, this time as a crew chief for "vintage" Nitro Funny Cars racing primarily in NHRA's new Hot Rod Heritage Series.

Hendrick Motorsports team gets 300+ Wins in 2023. 
 At Texas Motor Speedway in September, William Byron delivered the 300th Cup Series win for team owner Rick Hendrick. The victory came two years after the organization passed Petty Enterprises mark of 268 Cup Series wins to become the winningest team in premier series history. In total, 20 drivers have won Cup Series races at Hendrick Motorsports and the team stands at 301 wins following the completion of the 2023 season.
Hendrick Motorpsorts engine divisions get 500th win
Three weeks earlier at Darlington Raceway, Kyle Larson’s win to open the playoffs also marked the 500th national series win for the Hendrick Motorsports engine department. That group currently builds engines for more than just the four Cup Series cars for Hendrick Motorsports. JTG Daugherty Racing and Spire Motorsports used Hendrick engines as do NASCAR Xfinity Series teams JR Motorsports and DGM Racing. Through JTG’s win with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in the 2023 DAYTONA 500, the engine shop earned its eighth win in "The Great American Race." At the close of the 2023 season, the engine shop has accumulated 506 national series wins.

2. World cup finals records broken
   1. Carl Brunet in his GM Ecotec-powered Pontiac GXP in the Four-Cylinder race, set a new four-cylinder world record with an incredible run of 5.828 seconds at 242.71 mph 
   2. Mark Benston Jr. of Delaware reset the Outlaw Drag Radial elapsed time world record four separate times throughout the weekend. Qualified third with his turbocharged 2002 Chevrolet Camaro thanks to a record-setting 5.752 at 254.14 mph run, Benston was on a tear as he continued to improve throughout eliminations. After securing a first-round win, Benston clicked off a 5.733 at 254.76 mph hit in round two. 
      In the semi-finals, his 5.713 at 252.00 mph blast put him through to the finals, where Benston bested John Odom with a monumental 5.697 at 254.66 mph pass, finalizing not only his overall win but also obliterating the world record once more.
