In episode 27 of LINZanity, Greg has David Zucker answer every question you ever had (but were afraid to ask) about the movie Airplane! ... David Zucker wrote/directed/produced the greatest comedies of all time— Airplane! and Naked Gun as well as many others including Scary Movie 3, 4 and 5 as either writer/director or producer… “Surely You Can’t Be Serious—The True Story of Airplane” is his newly released book recounting the making of the movie Airplane! with Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker… The trio was confident the movie would be a huge success despite initially being turned down by every studio — until Paramount bought it… Airplane! has transcended and is beloved by all generations for the past 43 years… The trio had a successful theater company called Kentucky Fried Theatre where they would spoof commercials, etc… John Landis gave them the idea to make a
Movie based on their theater show (Kentucky Fried Movie) which Landis also directed and David credits learning how to direct by watching John Landis direct… David used to tape old shows at night just for the commercials to spoof but saw the 1957 drama, Zero Hour, and decided To recast the movie, rewrite it and make it a comedy… Michael Eisner greenlit it as President of Paramount Studios and he and the executives assigned to it, did a great job championing it to a massive success… Robert Stack was the first role cast in Airplane!… Pat Proft has been one of his closest writing partners… Robert Hays was on a sitcom called Angie prior to being cast as Ted Striker… Bill Murray and Chevy Chase were also up for the role Striker… Robert Stack had just finished Steven Speilberg’s comedy 1941 and turned down a piece of Airplane! in exchange for a salary because he didn’t think the movie would do well… Airplane! cost $3.2M and made $160M in a year…The Trailer was so funny, one guy in the theater fell out of his seat laughing… Quentin Tarantino is in the Book telling readers that he saw a guy fall out of his seat laughing at a theater for David’s first film, Kentucky Fried Movie… Pete Rose was up for the role of Roger Murdock before Kareem Abdul Jabbar got it… Kareem was fine making fun of himself… Leslie Nielsen was the hardest role to cast until Leslie came in… David Letterman was up for Ted Striker but didn’t want to do it… And, of course, Kareem only did the movie because he wanted to buy a $5000 rug… Plus much more!
