Nobel Prize-winning physicist Karen Hallberg warned that artificial intelligence could pose dangers comparable to nuclear technology if humans lose control over increasingly powerful systems. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club, she described AI as a dual-use technology capable of producing enormous benefits in medicine and everyday life while also creating serious risks. Hallberg said recursively self-improving AI could develop unpredictably and called for governments to work directly with private technology companies to establish safeguards. Her concerns echo warnings from AI developers themselves. Anthropic has told prospective investors that advanced AI could create catastrophic or even existential risks, devoting a substantial portion of its IPO prospectus to potential dangers.

“Fly Me to the Moon” in a jazz-bossa setting turns the standard into something lighter, warmer and effortlessly sophisticated. The bossa nova rhythm gives the melody a gentle sway while the jazz harmonies preserve the song’s elegance and romance. Rather than pushing the tune dramatically, the arrangement lets it breathe, creating the feeling of a late-night lounge, a quiet cocktail bar or a warm Brazilian evening. It is relaxed, intimate and timeless, proving how naturally this classic fits the bossa nova vocabulary.

A wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of 29-year-old Christian Faith Madison alleges that ChatGPT reinforced severe religious delusions before she died after walking into traffic in June 2025. According to the complaint, Madison initially used ChatGPT for routine tasks, but increasingly treated it as an emotional confidant. Her family claims the chatbot validated beliefs that she was a prophet or “seer,” even when she explicitly worried that she was delusional and spiraling. The lawsuit alleges that this reinforcement continued after self-harm and psychiatric hospitalization. Most disturbing are alleged exchanges near her death in which suicidal and resurrection-related ideas were answered with highly romanticized language about “surrender,” “oblivion” and transcendence rather than clearly redirecting her toward emergency help. The family argues GPT-4o was defectively sycophantic and intensified her crisis. These are allegations in ongoing litigation, not established judicial findings.

Joe Pass and Roy Clark’s 1993 performance of “Jambalaya” is pure musicianship without theatrics. Pass brings his trademark jazz-guitar sophistication, effortless chord substitutions and immaculate phrasing, while Clark answers with the relaxed virtuosity that made him one of country music’s most underrated instrumentalists. What makes the performance special is the conversation between them. Neither musician is trying to dominate. They listen, react and leave space for each other. Hank Williams’s familiar tune becomes a meeting point between country, swing and jazz, proving how naturally great players can erase genre boundaries. It is warm, playful and technically dazzling without ever sounding like an exercise. Two masters simply enjoying the song and each other’s musicianship.

Futurism reports that Justin Brown, one of three brothers behind Brown Brothers Media, had significant documented social and business connections to Ghislaine Maxwell years before her criminal conviction. Brown’s startup Ideapod held its 2013 launch party at Maxwell’s Manhattan townhouse, with photographs showing Brown socializing with her. Futurism says Brown subsequently promoted Maxwell and her TerraMar Project online and that several people connected to TerraMar were also involved with Ideapod. Brown strongly denies ever having any relationship, contact, business dealings or funding from Jeffrey Epstein and says any implication that he knew about or participated in Epstein or Maxwell’s crimes is false. The larger significance is Brown Brothers Media itself. Futurism describes the company as buying struggling publications, replacing journalists with AI-generated content and fake personas and operating sites estimated to attract roughly 64 million visits monthly. The story raises serious questions about credibility, transparency and who increasingly controls online information.

Rick Braun’s “Silk” is exactly what the title promises. Smooth, polished and effortlessly cool. Braun’s trumpet glides over a relaxed contemporary jazz groove with the kind of control that makes difficult phrasing sound almost casual. The live studio setting adds warmth without sacrificing precision. Braun has long been one of smooth jazz’s most recognizable trumpet voices and this performance shows why. Elegant without becoming sleepy, melodic without becoming predictable and sophisticated without trying too hard. Perfect late-night listening.

    27 SEP 2026.

A society can display something that resembles collective psychopathology, but I would be careful about calling an entire country mentally ill. Psychiatry diagnoses individuals, not nations.

What absolutely can happen at scale is mass conformity, propaganda effects, moral panic, group polarization, learned fear, scapegoating and preference falsification. People begin repeating ideas they privately doubt because the social cost of dissent becomes too high. Once institutions, media, peers and authority figures reinforce the same frame, the effect can become self-sustaining. You do not need literal “mind control” to produce remarkably uniform behavior.

MKULTRA, BLUEBIRD and ARTICHOKE were real U.S. intelligence programs involving interrogation, drugs, hypnosis and behavioral experimentation. But their existence does not establish that modern populations are being secretly controlled by a perfected version of those programs. The more ordinary mechanisms are often powerful enough: repetition, emotional conditioning, censorship pressures, algorithmic amplification, prestige signaling and fear of exclusion.

Sofie Birch’s “Juaduddanya” is a wonderfully strange four-minute excursion that feels less composed than conjured. Opening with calm horns, it gradually wanders into gentle progressive jazz, ambient textures and dreamlike abstraction. Birch has said the album’s lyrics are essentially invented magical language, which suits the music perfectly. There is no conventional narrative to follow. You simply surrender to it. The track opens her 2026 album Bivabippabualukka and functions beautifully as an invitation into Birch’s peculiar, hypnotic musical universe.

  • Who Failed Charlie Kirk? Inside the UVU After-Action Report and What It Means
    https://lionelmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/Who-failed-Charlie-Kirk-Inside-the-UVU-After-Action-Report.mp4

    26 SEP 2024.

The new Utah Valley University after-action report deserves to be read slowly because buried inside its 158 pages is a reconstruction of an event-security process that was fragmented, informal and, at critical moments, astonishingly incomplete.

The most important point is that this is not merely social-media speculation anymore. The independent review identifies concrete decisions made by TPUSA, its representatives, its private security personnel and Utah Valley University. And some of those decisions raise very serious questions.

Start with cooperation. Investigators say they repeatedly attempted to interview Brian Harpole, identified as the leader of the Integrity Solutions team protecting Charlie Kirk. They tried telephone calls and a certified letter. No response. They also sought interviews with TPUSA Security Supervisor Dan Flood and senior field representative Maycee Crofts. Neither participated. Senior TPUSA personnel in Phoenix were contacted for assistance. Again, according to the report, there was no response. Even a Utah risk-management official urged cooperation.

That proves no sinister motive. But after the assassination of the organization’s CEO, an independent investigation asking security personnel what happened would seem to present an obvious opportunity to establish the record.

    Then there is the venue.

UVU personnel raised concerns about the Fountain Courtyard because an outdoor location was harder to control. TPUSA nevertheless preferred the courtyard and its own ticketing system. The report says those decisions limited UVU’s ability to obtain reliable real-time attendance information and placed the event in a more difficult security environment. The review concludes that UVU should have retained authority over venue selection, ticketing and access control rather than deferring those decisions.

This matters because the courtyard was surrounded by buildings, elevated areas, pedestrian routes and multiple vantage points. The report says those conditions required serious attention to line-of-sight assessment, elevated-position review, building access, fixed posts and protective operations. Yet there was no comprehensive written Security Assessment or Event Action Plan tying those elements together.

The planning questionnaire raises another remarkable issue. According to the report, information described as coming “straight from the TPUSA team” projected roughly 600 attendees and represented that there were no risk factors, safety or security concerns or need for emergency medical services. At the same time, UVU’s own Free Speech Committee was already flagging possible protests. The contrast is striking. The event involved a nationally known political figure, an outdoor location and private executive protection, yet the paperwork conveyed no identified security concern.

Coordination then developed late. Police Chief Jeff Long asked for contact with TPUSA security during the August planning process. When no security representative contacted him, he went looking for that contact himself. Dan Flood finally spoke with Long on September 3, only a week before the event.

The report describes what followed as “very limited” coordination. There was no structured pre-event briefing or site walkthrough involving Harpole, Flood and UVUPD. There was no integrated written plan specifying who controlled elevated positions, who handled building access, who monitored lines of sight or who was responsible for particular protective functions.

And one fact deserves emphasis. TPUSA did identify a legitimate concern. Flood warned Chief Long about the Hall of Flags elevated walkway above Charlie’s speaking position. UVU cleared it, taped it off and placed two officers there. That demonstrates that TPUSA security was not simply ignoring elevated threats.

But the report says the environment contained broader elevated-position problems beyond that single walkway. Surrounding buildings, rooftops, pedestrian areas and multiple access routes complicated the protective picture. The problem was not merely whether somebody noticed one vulnerable location. The problem was that nobody produced a comprehensive, documented line-of-sight and elevated-position plan.

    That distinction is enormous.

Security cannot consist of spotting one problem at a time minutes before the principal walks onto the stage. Executive protection is supposed to be systematic. Identify the site. Map vulnerabilities. Establish responsibility. Conduct the walkthrough. Confirm posts. Establish communications. Plan emergency movement. Know who owns every critical assignment.

The report says that structure was missing.

It is also important not to rewrite the report as an indictment solely of TPUSA. UVU itself receives substantial criticism. The university allowed too much deference to the outside organization. It lacked a completed Security Assessment. It did not request additional mutual-aid resources despite having avenues to do so. It lacked dedicated real-time camera monitoring. And after the shooting, the report identifies serious problems involving emergency communications and command procedures.

In other words, this was a systems failure involving multiple actors.

But anyone who previously insisted that questions about TPUSA’s decisions or private security operation were somehow illegitimate now has to confront the report itself. Those decisions are part of the official investigative record.

    The unanswered questions are straightforward.

Why did key TPUSA security figures not participate in the review?

Why was the harder-to-control outdoor location retained after concerns were raised?

Why was there no complete joint walkthrough?

Why was there no comprehensive written protective plan?

Who had responsibility for the surrounding elevated positions?

And what documentation exists showing precisely what TPUSA security believed had been covered before Charlie Kirk entered that courtyard?

    Those are not conspiracy questions.

    They are security questions.

And after this report, they are unavoidable.

Stéphane Grappelli and David Grisman were a remarkable meeting of jazz generations. In this 1979 Tonight Show performance, Grappelli’s elegant, airborne violin meets Grisman’s muscular mandolin on “Dawgma” and “Swing ’39.” Grappelli, already legendary for his work with Django Reinhardt, sounds utterly contemporary beside Grisman’s progressive acoustic “Dawg” music. Their interplay is joyful, technically dazzling and completely conversational. Mark O’Connor, Mike Marshall and Rob Wasserman complete an extraordinary ensemble. Johnny Carson’s delighted reaction says almost everything.

Why So Many Things Confound Me and I Thoroughly Love It

I am not confused because I am slow. I am confused because the official story keeps arriving pre-chewed, shrink-wrapped, and already applauding itself. That is when my brain sits up. That is when I start having a good time.

They tell you the institution is competent the same week it cannot keep a date straight. They tell you the press is a watchdog the same hour it is a choir. They tell you the science is settled while the footnotes are still on fire. I am supposed to nod. I do not nod. I lean in. Confusion, if you refuse to outsource it, is not a defect. It is a smoke alarm.

I love the moment a narrative develops a limp. One document that does not match the press release. One briefing that sat on a desk. One hiring memo that rewrites morality as “case by case.” One foundation that funds the movement and then congratulates the movement for being organic. The world is not mysterious because it is magic. It is mysterious because power hates a second question.

People treat certainty like a personality. I treat it like a tell. The louder the consensus, the more I want the receipt. Not because I enjoy living in fog. Because fog is where they hide the machinery. If a thing cannot survive being turned over, it was never a thing. It was a costume.

I thoroughly love this because it means I am still awake. A mind that is never confounded is a mind that has been rented out. I would rather be the man in the room who says wait, that does not add up, than the man who claps on cue and calls it wisdom. The puzzle is the point. The official answer is often the first lie. And I am not done asking.

John Martyn’s “Bless the Weather” is a gentle, luminous meditation on love, change and emotional surrender. Released in 1971, it captures Martyn at his most intimate, blending folk, jazz and acoustic warmth with that unmistakably relaxed vocal delivery. The song feels almost weightless, as though he is accepting whatever life brings without resistance. Beneath its simplicity is remarkable emotional depth. It is tender without becoming sentimental, spiritual without preaching and representative of Martyn’s singular ability to make vulnerability sound effortless.

A digraph is the two-letter prefix used at the beginning of many CIA cryptonyms. It generally identified a geographic area, organizational component or operational category. The remaining letters formed the distinctive name assigned to a particular project, operation, asset or person. MKULTRA, for example, combined the MK digraph associated with the CIA’s Technical Services Staff and the identifying word ULTRA. PBSUCCESS was the cryptonym for the CIA operation directed against Guatemala’s Árbenz government. TPAJAX identified the 1953 covert operation in Iran. AMLASH concerned a Cuban figure and related operations against Fidel Castro. FUBELT referred to covert CIA activities involving Chile during the rise of Salvador Allende. These prefixes should not automatically be treated as ordinary abbreviations. PB, TP, AM, FU and MK were not necessarily phrases whose individual letters expanded into recognizable English words. They functioned as administrative markers understood within the intelligence system. That is why popular interpretations such as “MK means Mind Kontrol” may sound persuasive while lacking documentary support. A cryptonym concealed the subject while allowing officials to discuss it efficiently in cables, memoranda and financial records. Once the system is understood, names that appear mysterious become structured labels combining a coded category with a unique identifier.

Hacking is about to enter an entirely new dimension. Artificial intelligence can automate reconnaissance, accelerate vulnerability discovery, generate convincing phishing attacks and adapt tactics at machine speed. What once required teams of skilled operators may increasingly be attempted by individuals using powerful AI tools. Defenders will use the same technology to detect anomalies, patch systems and anticipate attacks, creating an escalating contest between automated offense and automated defense. The danger is not simply smarter hackers. It is cyber conflict becoming faster, cheaper, more scalable and far harder for humans to monitor.

“Manic Monday” works beautifully in acoustic form because the stripped-down arrangement exposes just how clever and melodic the song really is. Without the glossy 1980s production, the bittersweet quality comes forward: exhaustion, routine, romance and that universal dread of Monday morning. The acoustic setting gives the performance warmth and intimacy while preserving the irresistible chorus. It also reminds you what a superb pop composition Prince created — deceptively simple, instantly memorable and strong enough to survive almost any arrangement.

    Oh, this is reassuring.

Apparently we have spent the last four years constructing an enormous portion of the American economy around artificial intelligence, pouring hundreds of billions into data centers, chips, electricity and computing infrastructure. Now some of the very people building the technology are suggesting that perhaps we should slow down because, minor detail, the systems could become extraordinarily dangerous.

    Excellent planning.

Bloomberg reports that AI-related investment may account for roughly half of recent U.S. GDP growth. Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta are expected to spend more than $1 trillion on capital expenditures in 2027, while commitments involving leases and energy approach another $2.4 trillion.

Nothing says “stable economy” quite like discovering that enormous portions of your stock market, corporate borrowing, electricity infrastructure and economic growth increasingly depend upon a technology whose own creators are publicly discussing whether it should be slowed down.

And naturally Wall Street responded to the AI revolution exactly as Wall Street always responds to revolutions: calmly, cautiously and without excessive speculation.

    Just kidding.

Since ChatGPT arrived, nearly three-quarters of the S&P 500’s gain reportedly came from only 20 companies, most tied to the AI boom. Nvidia alone soared more than 1,300 percent during that period.

So now we have the perfect arrangement.

If AI keeps accelerating, people worry about what increasingly powerful systems might eventually do.

If AI slows down, investors worry about what happens to trillions of dollars predicated upon AI never slowing down.

    Brilliant.

We have apparently engineered an economic system in which the technology may be considered too dangerous to continue developing at full speed but simultaneously too economically important to stop developing at full speed.

    That is not a paradox.

    That is modern economic planning.

Build the airplane while flying it, mortgage the airport to finance the engines and then halfway across the Atlantic announce that several engineers have concerns about aerodynamics.

    Relax.

I’m sure everything is completely under control.

Ed Sheeran’s apology raises more questions than it answers. If he genuinely supports freedom of expression, why was Macklemore removed from the tour after speaking openly about Palestinian suffering? Sheeran now insists the decision belonged to promoters and stadium owners, but that explanation sounds less like leadership than corporate buck passing. He possessed the platform, the name and presumably considerable leverage. Why did he not use them before the controversy exploded?

The deeper issue is whether Macklemore would have been punished for endorsing a fashionable establishment cause. Artists routinely transform concerts into political rallies when their message pleases corporations, celebrities and media gatekeepers. But Gaza threatens powerful interests, commercial relationships and carefully protected narratives. Suddenly everyone discovers the importance of keeping music separate from politics.

Then came protests, visibly empty seats and the withdrawal of supporting performers. Only after the financial and reputational damage became impossible to ignore did Sheeran publicly describe Gaza as catastrophic and unjustifiable. Was that conviction or crisis management? Was it moral courage or an emergency public relations maneuver?

Macklemore accepted the consequences before knowing whether anyone would stand beside him. He spoke first, lost work and pledged his tour earnings to Palestinian relief. Sheeran found his voice only after the silence became more expensive than speaking.

Perhaps Sheeran’s apology is sincere. People can reconsider their positions and correct mistakes. But sincerity is measured by sacrifice, not carefully drafted statements delivered after public pressure. Macklemore took the risk when it mattered. Sheeran offered contrition when retreat had become commercially necessary. That distinction is the entire story and audiences should remember it clearly.
