  • Douglas Kahn: Sound Matters - One Energy Among Others (Histories and Theories of Sound)
Douglas Kahn presents his lecture, Sound Matters: One Energy Among Others. Based on his most recent book, Earth Sound Earth Signal: Energies and Earth Magnitude in the Arts, Kahn reworks the histories of science, communications, music and the arts to account for the incursion of electromagnetism into culture from the nineteenth century to the present. Investigating the trade between acoustics and electromagnetism in aesthetics and the arts, Kahn poses questions for new approaches in the arts, ecology and media where sound is but one energy among others.

  • Jonas Staal: Propaganda Art in the 21st Century (Machine Listening)
Terms such as “fake news” and “alternative facts” have become common vocabulary in the so-called post-truth era. But there is a sense in which these are just contemporary iterations of a familiar phenomenon: propaganda. Propaganda is not merely concerned with sending messages – its aim is to construct reality as such. In this episode visual artist Jonas Staal elaborates on what he describes as today’s arena of the propaganda (art) struggle.
