Title: Keeping an Eye Open

Subtitle: Essays on Art

Author: Julian Barnes

Narrator: Andrew Wincott

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 37 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-07-15

Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts

Publisher's Summary:

"Flaubert believed that it was impossible to explain one art form in terms of another, and that great paintings required no words of explanation.

"Braque thought the ideal state would be reached when we said nothing at all in front of a painting. But we are very far from reaching that state. We remain incorrigibly verbal creatures who love to explain things, to form opinions, to argue....

"It is a rare picture which stuns, or argues, us into silence. And if one does, it is only a short time before we want to explain and understand the very silence into which we have been plunged."

Julian Barnes began writing about art with a chapter on Géricault's The Raft of the Medusa in his 1989 novel A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters. Since then he has written a series of remarkable essays, chiefly about French artists, for a variety of journals and magazines.

Gathering them for this book, he realised that he had unwittingly been retracing the story of how art made its way from Romanticism to Realism and into Modernism.

Members Reviews:

'allo 'allo

where did they find the narrator? I don't need quotes to be read in a cheesy French accent, just because the person who said it was French...

fascinating introduction to art history

I loved it, great personal stories about the personality of the artists behind great paintings!

Formato: Unabridged

Durata: 24 mins

Lingua: Italiano

Data di pubblicazione: 03-30-15

Editore: Area51 Publishing

Categoria: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts

Riepilogo Editore:

The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli is a timeless image, expression of an abstract sense of beauty, which draws on mythology to project in an eternal dimension. At the same time, this is perhaps the most complete expression of a social and cultural environment well defined: the Florence of the last decades of the 15th century. Botticelli plunges us into a dimension of unreality and magic that is expressed through a cultured allegory and a complex sense of poetry. The audio paintings of Area51 Publishing are a new way to know, love, and enjoy the art. Each painting is told in detail to let you know the history, discover the style and experience first-hand the excitement of the painting.

Titel: Alles geht den Bach runter

Untertitel: Das Phänomen der Dekadenz

Autor:: Sabine Appel

Erzähler: Sabine Appel

Format: Unabridged

Spieldauer: 56 mins

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 03-19-15

Herausgeber: SWR Edition

Kategorien: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
