Publisher's Summary:
Honest Abe was written to act as your easy reference point that contains everything you need to know about the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. Throughout the book, I have sought to paint the picture of the scenes I describe, so that this is more than an academic treatise. This book is meant to be more of a movie; a movie that plays out in your head as you hear its vivid details, so that you can feel that you were there as it was happening.
This is certainly a quick listen, but it is densely packed with information that so many historians tend to overlook. Lincoln's story is a gripping tale, from beginning to end. Given the massive nature of his accomplishments and the nearly six decades he lived, you might wonder how these words can adequately cover so much ground. This book will give you an excellent grasp of the man - as a son, as a younger brother, as a father, as a thinker, as a politician, and, of course, as our 16th president.
Members Reviews:
A Lot of Information About Abe and His Times, But...
As the author promised, there is a lot of information about the man and his times. For me, personally, it still felt as though I was reading yet another textbook, similar to the ones I read in school. I prefer reading historical books like those written by David McCullough, where characters are fully developed and come alive, and history flows like a thrilling novel.
Not worth the time
Hack writing. Poorly edited, misspelled words, missing words, wrong words,. A total waste of time.
Term paper
This reads like a high school term paper on Lincoln, with awkward sentences and loads of typos. For example, when the author discussed the conflict between Native Americans led by Black Hawk and the US militia, he referred to the Native Americans as "the Black Hawks." As a high school term paper, I'd give it a C. As a book for adults, I'd just pass on it.
Short but interesting
I enjoyed this book about Abraham Lincoln but then I was born and raised in Illinois, the land of Lincoln. It gave more information about this great man. I liked it.
A great, enjoyable, quick read --- a "capitalization" of the Civil War.
Would have given 5 stars, but t book had several misspellings and misprint as far as putting down the wrong words. Other than that, it was a page Turner. It kept me captivated till the very end.
