Really terrible book

This is a snarky, lightweight author who can't even get the date of JFK's assassination right. One crumb of gossip after another. Poorly researched and dependent on rumor and hearsay. He is also clearly biased against gays.

The narrator is also sarcastic and no fun to hear. Not even one star! I returned it.

a most unprepossessing biography subject

Much is made of the opportunities and adoration which the Kennedy family enjoy (or are subjected to) simply because of who they are. The same holds true for this book - it is unlikely to have been written if the subject had been an everyday Joe Blow. Some sympathy must attach to RFK Jr for the extraordinary series of tragedies which have blighted his life and family, and his genetic inheritance boded ill from the start, but I just found 'Bobby' to be a big bore. The author has put it together in a readable somewhat gossipy style, and the narrator does a fine job with the material, but from about the halfway point I was looking forward to the end. Sex, drugs, and irresponsible behaviour, even when attached to a famous name, are not enough to carry a full-length biography.

This book is gigantic waste of time. Poorly written, all gossip and innuendo...save your money!

Confirmation of an adult spoiled brat!

What did you like best about RFK Jr.? What did you like least?

Tells what everyone knows but is afraid to say out loud due to the "Kennedy repercussions". Entitled from birth, raised to be a selfish, self serving spoiled adult leave a trail of destruction everywhere he goes and sees nothing wrong.

Would you recommend RFK Jr. to your friends? Why or why not?

I would but why spend money to confirm what you already know?

Many people believe that only the top tier Kennedys are fascinating: JFK, Jackie, John, Jr., etc., but the author, who wrote a shocking 1993 bio of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s mother Ethel, obviously picked up where he left off and decided to profile the most charismatic, talented, and intellectually gifted of the famous widow's eleven children.

A Step Back in Time

I was most interested in reading Churchills fabulous descriptions of the countryside and the insects, birds and animals he encountered. He gave beautiful descriptions of both the Uganda Railway and the Victoria and Albert Railway. His mastery of the English language along with the interesting 19th Century writing style makes reading the book just like stepping into history.

Churchill was the Under-secretary of State for the Colonies when he undertook the journey of East Africa in 1907. I know that Churchill was one of the last men of the British Empire and he never quite accepted the fall of the Empire after the war. Therefore, I found it most interesting to see the African colonies from his colonist viewpoint. The so-called modern viewpoint is so different from how the British saw the world in the 1890s early 1900s.

Churchills descriptions of the beauty of the area around Mount Kenya, Murchison Falls, Kampala, the Riff Valley and the White Nile were beautiful; it is sad to think how it has all changed. The book is short and a most interesting read. Stephen Thorne did an excellent job narrating the book.

Reads like an adventure story

Hemmings opening paraphrased the London Times obituary saying Geoffrey Pyke was one of the most original yet unrecognized figures of the 20th century. He was educated at Cambridge and was a Jew.

Pyke had a miserable childhood; this inspired him to earn a fortune on the London Metal exchange, and he spent this to create a school to educate his son and other young children. The revolutionary ideas of Malting House continue to influence British education 85 years after it closed.

Hemming says Pyke was a prolific inventor and worked with the government during WWII. Several of his ideas from WWII are still being used today such as the Special Forces Military Units. MI5 tracked him for years thinking he was a Soviet spy. Hemming has an interesting chapter about what MI5 had discovered about Pyke.

In WWI Pyke made a perilous journey into the heart of Germany, he was a reporter for the London Daily Chronicle. He was captured and placed into Ruhleben internment camp. He escaped and wrote a book about his ordeal which became a best seller. Hemming spent time describing Pykes problem solving method as well as some of his other investigative techniques, I found this somewhat interesting. James Langton narrated the book.

A good third

Initially, I wrote a review praising this book as I was a third a way in. Was such a great start! I didn't expect it to fall so flat. Perhaps I just bored quickly of the same plot: big dilemma, will our hero be misunderstood or jailed or will he prevail? He prevails, lies low for awhile until the next big dilemma.

I suppose it's short enough that I could've battled through it but there are so many better books to spend time on.

The Lost Cause was primarily a creation of men from Virginia, so in turn they deified the Virginian Lee, and are widely responsible for Lee's immense popularity today. And since Lee could do no wrong in their eyes, writers like Early looked for others to blame for the South's loss, especially at Gettysburg, which was widely viewed then and now as the chief turning point of the war.

Barely about General Early

This is a very general overview of the Civil War in the East, and rarely speaks specifically about Early. If you want a quick review of the campaigns in the eastern theater this is it. The best info regarding Early is provided in quotes from some of the General's own writings and reports.

History's Lesser Known Generals

Historical writting at it's best. Easy to follow chronological sequences.If there had been a couple of more Generals at Early's caliber, the war may have had a different outcome.

Thanks to his background and his own abilities, Cnut became the most prominent of the Danish kings of England (from 1016), but he was also, at times, king of Denmark (from 1018-1019), Norway (from 1028), and parts of Sweden (after 1026). During his reign, he united England, protected Denmark, and had a lot of influence throughout Scandinavia, a remarkable feat that he managed to accomplish through careful alliances and diplomacy, yet most often through direct force. For that reason, Cnut has been referred to as the greatest Anglo-Saxon king of England, despite the fact he wasn't actually Anglo-Saxon. His death in 1035 came shortly before the Norman conquest of England by William the Conqueror.

For centuries, the Vikings had been raiding throughout the region, including in the British Isles, and Cnut's campaigns represented the apex of that activity. Somewhat ironically, Cnut is one of the best-documented leaders of the Vikings, a civilization that fascinates people mostly because they still seem mysterious and different compared to their European counterparts.

I found this book about the best-documented leader of the Vikings and king of all Denmark, England and Norway for a period of time rather informative, but do yourself a favor and start with the Viking conquests found in Chapter 2 (from the handy link in the table of contents) and save the very dry documentation of the sources in Chapter 1 for last if you're so inclined. Lasting from June 8th 793 AD ( destruction of the Abbey of Lindisfarne) to 1066 the book chronicles the attacks starting down the coasts of Scotland and Ireland eventually encompassing England itself while describing the Viking's notorious "habit of despoiling monasteries, appropriating treasure, and transporting the local inhabitants from the towns...back to Scandanavia as slaves," the raids only diminishing once they settled down and became Christianized.

In one fell swoop, Michael Shaara breathed life back into the reputations of men like John Buford and Joshua Chamberlain, cast as the Union heroes of day one and day two respectively that made victory at Gettysburg possible. In the novel Chamberlain's regiment holds the high ground against a series of desperate Confederate charges, and when they ran out of gunpowder, Chamberlain ordered a brave bayonet charge that drove the Confederates in their front from the fight. With that, the Union's left flank was saved.

The Story of an Unassuming Hero

The story of Joshua Chamberlain is a very well notated "every man"....a mild mannered citizen soldier from new England, not well trainned in the art of war but who throughout all of the Civil war books by this author shows up to lead his men and fight to the best of his abilities. He used his instincts and logic to do his job.

overview of civil war history, not much on Chamberlain

Thie book didn't have a lot of information about Joshua lawrence Chamberlain, mostly on the events of the civil war. I have read many books on the civil war and feel the book was mediocre and wasn't up to what I had expected with the title of the book.

A very good coverage of a highly notable figure. Excellent secondary source material for the buff, or the amateur historian. Highly recommended, especially to help inform the iconography of Catton et al.

Easy to read biography

Paul N. Spellman is professor of history and division chair at Wharton Junior College. He has written a number of books on the history of Texas. Spellman published the biography of Rogers in 2008.

John Harris Rogers (1863-1930) served in Texas law enforcement for 40 years as a Texas Ranger, United States Marshall, City police Chief and in the private sector as a security agent. Rogers is famous as one of the legendary Four Captains of the Texas Rangers that helped made the transition from the frontier Battalion days into the twentieth century. The Four Captains were as follows: Bill McDonald, John H. Rogers, John Brook and John Hughes.

Spellman says that Rogers had a quiet manner and preferred to work behind the scenes. According to Spellman, Rogers was known as the bible carrying lawman. The author tells of Rogers role in some of the famous events of the Texas Rangers such as: the Brown County Fence Cutting Wars, The East Texas Conner Fight, the riots during the Laredo Quarantine and the hunts for Hill Loftus and Rogers capture of the infamous Gregario Cortes.

The book is well written and thoroughly researched and is easy to read. Charles Curtis narrated the book.
