Not a good story book for children
Iâve always loved different renditions of this story, but had never read the original. I bought for my kids for Christmas. This was a difficult book to read out loud for kids. The language and writing are definitely not of this age. I donât reccomend if youâre buying for children, but a nice book for a collection or something.
A story of love and want.
I love O'Henrys writing. If only I could tell a story so succinctly! The emotion of each character is laid out very simply yet clearly. That's what this story is about, emotion.
    Heartwarming
We all know the story. 2 people in love without a penny doing a selfless act for each other at Christmas time. It's a must along with the Christmas Carol by Dickens.
A good reminder what is really important
A good quick story. Sometimes we forget about what is really important in this life. This is a good reminder of that.
    Beautiful short read
You can read this in about 15 minutes. It's a beautiful story of sacrificial love. it's a free ebook! It's an excellent read.

    A Descent into the Maelstrom
"A Descent Into The Maelstrom", by Edgar Allan Poe, is the story of a man's struggle with the sea. The narrator of the story is recounting the tale, as the guide told it to him. The guide has led the narrator to the edge of a steep cliff so that he can view for himself the jagged rocks and crashing surf below him. As they watch, the swirling waves begin to form into a whirlpool where everything is sucked into its core. The guide proceeds to tell how, three years earlier, he and his brothers faced a life and death battle to escape the maelstrom. I wanted to read this story because I like reading about the sea and have also always loved reading Poe's works. I believe that younger children would have difficulty understanding it, but teens and adults would enjoy the suspense of this conflict between man and nature.
In my opinion, the imagery of the setting was so vivid it made me want to go see this place for myself: "...this "little cliff" arose, a sheer unobstructed precipice of black shining rock, some fifteen or sixteen hundred feet from the world of crags beneath us" and "...To the right and left, as far as the eye could reach, there lay outstretched, like ramparts of the world, lines of horridly black and beetling cliff, whose character of gloom was but the more forcibly illustrated by the surf which reared high up against it its white and ghastly crest, howling and shrieking for ever." By these quotes, the reader can almost feel the mesmerizing effect of the ocean as it pulls its victims to its black depths. Another reason why I liked this particular story is because it developed the old man's character very well for such a short narrative. The guide must be very brave and perhaps a little reckless to take his boat out where no other fisherman would go near. The fact that he does not blame his brother for what he does proves his moral character and love for his siblings. The old man also states that he is broken in body and spirit, but proves that he is not completely broken by the carefree way he sits on the edge of the cliff.
Overall, I thought this was one of Poe's best stories. Even though you know that the guide survived, you still are intrigued to find out how he escaped against such unbelievable odds. If you enjoy reading vivid tales of struggles between man and nature, stories that build the suspense until the very end, or just love Edgar Allan Poe's stories in general then I would highly recommend "A Descent Into The Maelstrom".

If you're a fan of tales of the sea, this is going to be one of those stories you have to read, and probably over and over.
If you're not a fan? ...meh?
A prematurely aged man tells of his encounter with the great whirlpool, how he lost his brother, and the terrible beauty of destruction. This is a very long story for all the little that happens, though. It's quite atmospheric and, again, if you're into the sea, that's great.

    Stop the Noise Already
Great story. Read it a long time ago. Wanted to hear it. Couldn't. The cutesy' artsy-craftsy production was rife with overpowering "background" noise and which was horribly distracting and obfuscating. I couldn't get a thing out of the audio book. AND the credits are longer than the story itself!! Blah.
"Because some stories aren't meant to be read" - is the producers motto. Ironic I suppose.

It doesnt take Brian long to find that advancement is going to be difficult, and he is stuck in a no-win job with few prospects. Brian, not the type to be held down by lack of opportunity, supplements his income as a cat burglar.
Not only does this pad his pocketbook, it gives his ego and self-confidence a tremendous boost, so much so that he is noted by the local political power broker. The broker has had his eye on Bryan for some time, seeing the potential for new blood in the state Senate. Brian realizes that he will, of course, be taking direction once he is elected. It's an easy transition from cat burglar to politician.

    Going Wrong
Bryan Dalyrimple, a self-centered twenty-something-year-old man enjoyed far too many indulgences and privileges. Fitzgerald has fun with morality in a way that shows Dalyrimple's deeds are genuine, and it leaves the reader knowing he still fails and goes wrong.

    Short, but filled with horror
This rather short horror tale by the famed Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is free on Amazon and is worth reading, not only because of the price but the story is interesting though filled with horror. A movie that I haven't seen yet was made containing the film version of the tale. In the tale, a fatal pestilence is devastating the country. The Prince, apparently concerned about the lives of his upper class friends gathers a thousand of them to a lavishly adorned Abbey to escape the red death. (Red referring to the blood that flows from dying plague-infected people.) Outside was death, but inside the seven-chambered Abbey there was music, wine, dancing, and laughter.
One night, the inhabitants noticed a new figure. Like the others the new comer was masked (masqued) for the celebration. But the newcomer frightened the others and they moved away. The prince, seeing their reaction, ordered his guests to unmask the newcomer, but all were afraid to approachâ.
What happens next is typical Poe.
    A Classic
A classic. It makes clear that no one escapes from all the problems of the world. Eventually, even if you lock yourself away, evil, and misfortune will find you.Required reading in High School. Personally, I am a fan of Poe, so I know I will be rereading other works of his.
Great classic for my collection, and easily accessible from my Kindle library.
Love this classic & it's great to have it readily on my Kindle so I can read it whenever I feel the inspiration. Please let me know if you found this review helpful.
    Not what expected. Quick publishing?
This product is not what I was expecting but it is the story of the Masque of Red Death and the cover is quite beautiful. This book also included a couple of other stories as well which was a pleasant surprise. The font is large and easy to read. It includes some pictures likely found on an online search that somewhat pertain to the story. Overall, for the price and the fact you can find this story for free online it is a decent deal.
    Special effects
When one speaks of special effects now we are usually referring to fx or visual, technological tricks. Poe uses only words to create his effects and they remain in your mind.

This short story first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1920, and later became part of Flappers and Philosophers. Fitzgerald was the master of exposing the underbelly of the aristocracy and the pompous, and here, Horace the prodigy falls in love with Monica the dancer. Horace puts his lofty goals on hold to pursue a more lucrative career as an acrobat, while Monica writes a book.
The title "Head and Shoulders" doesn't make a lot of sense until you begin to listen to the story and find that Monica tells Harold they are like head and shoulders, he being the head and she the shoulders. That moniker sticks with them, although it is turned around at the end of the story. "But when you opened your door at the rap of life you let in many things."

    Publisher's Summary:
"There was a rough stone age and a smooth stone age and a bronze age, and many years afterward a cut-glass age."
We meet Evelyn as she is dumping a "male" friend who, in today's world, would be considered her lover. He probably was, but in 1920, they just did not say that in polite literature. Meet the bowl. It was a wedding gift to Evelyn from another suitor she dumped when she married Mr. Porter.
"Evelyn, I'm going to give you a present that's as hard as you are, and as beautiful and as empty and as easy to see through."
As you might guess Evelyn is a beautiful yet rather shallow person.
The male friend was about to leave but, unfortunately, Mr. Porter is walking up the drive. Evelyn hides her friend in the closet, but when he decides to leave he bumps into the bowl and it gives off a resounding alarm. Busted. As she ages, and Evelyn does age, by 35 her beauty is pretty much gone, and the bowl seems to play a part in every mishap that befalls Evelyn and her family. Payback?
