Short but great

HP Lovecraft is a great. He writes in abstracts at times and in other with great detail and pointed thought. This short has both. Take a read

Brief, not his hest

Other horror writers give you somthing concrete and identifiable to be horrified by - they take all the fear out of the situation that bone-deep uncertainty leaves in. At his best, Lovecraft combine the best of ambiguity and clear fact. He gives just enough for the protagonist to be very sure that something is there. It has some inner logic, even if the protagonist can't see all its workings. At the same time, Lovecraft witholds enough to give the impression that humand minds are not wide enough, or deep enough, or dark and evil enough to understand just what those beings and forces might be.

This very short story, from early in Lovecraft's career, does quite well with the mood and insanity, but comes across thin on the substance and coherency that should have fueled it. It's Lovecraft so it can't be all bad, but it's not the best of Lovecraft.

Based on the name recognition of the authors, I was expecting much more. None of the stories were known to me (and probably not to anyone outside an english lit department). Two of the stories were decent, but the rest were unimpressive. Wasn't impressed with the readers either, as they tended towards over-acting (though perhaps the material lent itself to that).

The two-disc set served its purpose of keeping me awake on a long drive to a fishing cabin, but little else. I did like the fact that I could stop between short stories, unlike a longer novel. On my last long trip, I was listening to Shadow Divers (great book!) and arrived at my destination in the middle of a dive emergency. Had to wait three days to learn the fate of the divers.

Can't say I would really recommend this compilation, but if you're a voracious reader/listener who goes through books like candy, the price is hard to beat. Also might be more enjoyable to someone else for the nostalgic qualities.

In this Kate Chopin story, middle-aged and self-reliant Mamzelle Aurelie has never married but instead has chosen to live independently, spending most of her time managing her farm. However, left with her neighbor's children for a short time, Aurelie begins to soften and question some of her decisions. Narrator Liza Ross' performance is sturdy and precise, reflecting Aurelie's toughness and strength, and Ross gradually adds depth to her narration with layers of poignancy and regret in her voice, modulating the theatricality of the characters' accents.

A very short, short (takes about an hour to read it) book by Poe. I found it to be quite funny, laughing funny. There are no pedulums, no ravens or beating hearts. A quick, fun read.
