Publisher: Jimcin Recordings

Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 3 votes

Publisher's Summary:

This novella, first published in 1907, is very unusual as far as vampire stories go. It is one of the first psychic vampire stories, where a vampire feeds off more than just blood. A young writer visits an older master to help him hone his craft but ends up succumbing to the powerful influence of the mysterious old man. We soon find that he has left a trail of ruined protégés in his wake. It is a chilling tale with an unusual twist.

Purple prose run amok

This may be the most overwritten, overwrought mess I've ever read. From the beginning, I found the writing to be so florid, the prose so purple, I actually laughed out loud several times. Surely this isn't a good thing when you're reading a classic vampire story.

I switched to the free public domain Kindle version, but the story didn't improve upon seeing it in print.

The whole story can be summed up in a British expression, "I want to take your mind." The vampire wants intellectual "blood."

Not recommended at all, not even if you must read a cereal box instead.

The narrator did what he could with this mess, so I won't fault him for the one-star result.

Performance creates the experience

This is a new author for me so I was unfamiliar with his style. The story is well told, interesting and complex with an intricate plot. I did at times have some difficulty tracking the various characters but overall enjoyed the book. The narrator does a fabulous job of taking you into the story. She has a smooth wonderful flow. Her pronunciation of names and locals is spot on and carries on that feeling of being in the story. I would recommend the book and will look for more by this narrator.

It is a very good edition of the classical Russian book

I love this book and recommend it everyone who studies Russian. The language is classical, clear and pleasant to read.

I like the way this book is formatted, too. This is especially noticeable in the authentic and quality illustrations by the great Russian artist Michael Vrubel'.

A great bood

A great read! I enjoy reading Russian classics, and this is a must-read.

Title: Fairy Stories

Author: Brothers Grimm

Narrator: Anna Massey

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 30 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-16-15

Publisher: silksoundbooks Limited

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

These fairy tales are nasty. This is the land of goblins and sorceresses, with serious lines in revenge, not the land of unicorns and once upon a Barbie.

The tales that the Brothers Grimm collected during their time as linguistics professors, first at the University of Göttingen and then in Berlin, at the request of the King of Prussia, were an attempt to map the folklore of the German-speaking people.

These two seemingly inseparable brothers made one of the first collections of the stories that had been told by their forefathers for generations, but, more importantly, they wrote them down. They listened for years to the storytellers and tale spinners of the many disparate states and principalities which made up what would fairly shortly after their time become the newly unified Germany, collated them into several volumes and created what have become some of the major building blocks of the collective consciousness of Europe.

They have often been accused of corrupting the tales they were told; they did not write them down word for word but adapted them and wrote them up into the deliciously tough tales we know today. Nor were they strict in their adherence to the idea that they were mapping the folklore of the German people exclusively. There are tales from a much wider selection of European origins in their collection.

This is what transformed an academic exercise into a creative endeavour. It is fascinating to rediscover the origins of the bewilderingly Disneyfied story of Cinderella, for instance, but the Grimms' story of the soot-covered wench and her wish-granting bird is also a beautiful bit of writing - the Brothers Grimm tell a good story.

What makes this story great is how incredibly well written it is

The moral of this story is not new nor will it surprise you. What makes this story great is how incredibly well written it is. I think it was Louis L'Amour who said it should be required reading for every writer. Who am I to argue with that? It is a great read and worth going over more than twice. I highly recommend it.

Sad but true human observation

Wonderful short story about the trouble one can get into then, as now, through very human, but vain desires. Classic must-read.

Things are not always as they seem

Things are not always as they seem. Madame Loisel felt embarrassed by her lack of wealth. She wanted to be like the fine rich ladies. Her husband and her were invited to a ball. She felt she had nothing proper to wear so she bought a new dress and borrowed a beautiful necklace from a friend. She lost the necklace and worked many years to pay for the loss.

She worked hard and learned that things are not always as they seem. Beauty is within. Care for what you have. A true friend will always be there.

Lesson Learned

Initially, I read this in high school. It was a great short read just as I remembered it many years ago. Everyone should read this short story as there is a lesson to be learned by all.

The Necklace - A real classic

I read this in high school and I really enjoyed it so I got it again. The end of this story can really suck the breath out of you. I recommend it too you. This story taught me not to panic in life's situations.

Title: The Divine Comedy: Paradiso

Author: Dante Alighieri

Narrator: Denis Daly, Libby Stephenson

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 14 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-17-15

Publisher: Spoken Realms

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

In the final volume of The Divine Comedy, Dante completes his tour of the afterlife and rises to the highest sphere of heaven. His guide is Beatrice, who acts as both an object of devotion and also a source of instruction. In verse of the most sublime order, Dante not only describes the sights, sounds, and inhabitants of this celestial region, but also presents, with astonishing clarity, a comprehensive view of Catholic theology. Nor does he fail to explore the psychology of the saved souls, who, even in their habitual state of supernal bliss, still experience anger and disappointment over troubling events in the terrestrial world. However, at the end, even Dante's beloved Beatrice fades from his mind as he finds himself drawn ineluctably into ecstatic union with the Godhead itself.

This is the first recording of the elegant and accurate translation by Ichabod Charles Wright.
