Will remain in my memory for a very long time to comeâ

This was a simply beautiful âquietâ read, focusing on three fascinating women who visit the graveyards of Flanders shortly after the end of the First World War, searching for their missing loved ones. As well as searching for her husbandâs grave, Ruby is looking for forgiveness for a deed she bitterly regrets. Aliceâs brother joined up under the Canadian flag and probably under a false name, so her search is never going to be easy â but meeting up with a man from her past life adds an interesting twist. And then there is Martha, searching for her older son, accompanied by her younger son Ottoâ but without the support, and not in the same graveyards.

The story itself is enthralling, as these three very different women strive for the outcomes they hope for. They are perfectly drawn, each of them affected and changed by their experience, strengths and weaknesses exposed in unexpected ways. The backdrop is vividly described â the lush farmlands giving way to devastation and waste as they near Hoppestadt, the trenches still visible and bringing a horrifying reality to the theatre of war, bodies still being recovered nearby, the vast graveyards shocking with their evidence of wasted lives, the visual reminders of the way deserters were dealt with. The insight into the lives of those whose towns and homes were impacted is also superbly handled â with the feelings about the Germany that caused the devastation barely concealed beneath their brave attempts to rebuild and start again.

The emotional impact of this book is enormous â I cried so many times, and ached at the injustice and unfairness of it all. But itâs also immensely uplifting, with its concentration on the goodness and kindness of individuals â and the moving message that people are perhaps better remembered for their actions than by visiting their memorials. This lovely book will remain in my memory for a very long time to comeâ

Hard to tell if this novel would be better if read by someone else. The nasal and often melodramatic tone of the reader was grating. Hard to follow who the characters where and why at times. Few if any characters evoke empathy. I found myself asking "who could care less about these shallow people?

A Canadian Disaster & Its Aftermath

On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 en route to London, England from Toronto, Canada exploded off the coast of Ireland. All 329 passengers and crewmembers were killed. Of those dead, 268 were Canadians. Yet, this tragedy received little outrage in Canada - these dead may have been Canadians by birth or choice but the colour of their skin marked them as `other'. To too many Canadians, this was an Indian disaster, not a Canadian one - Brian Mulroney, then Prime Minister of Canada, phoned the Indian President to offer his condolences. It would be almost 20 years before suspects were finally brought to trial. Although, there were several suspects, only one man would ever be convicted and then only of manslaughter and perjury. Author Padma Viswanathan uses this lack of outrage by the larger Canadian population as well as the lack of closure for the victims as the backdrop for her novel, The Ever After of Ashwin Rao.

Ashwin came to Canada in 1969 to study medicine and psychology. He settled into Canadian life with a growing practice and a Canadian girlfriend. However, when his father falls ill, he returns to India and accepts a job there. It is a period of political unrest in India. When Indira Gandhi is assassinated in 1984, Sikhs are blamed, leading to violence against them. As the violence spreads to their neighbourhood, Ashwin and his father hide some of their Sikh neigbours but witness the murder of two men at the end of their street. In 1985, Ashwin's sister plans a trip to India with her two children. Ashwin last speaks to her just as they prepare to leave to catch their flight on Air India Flight 182.

As the 2004 trial of the suspects finally begins for the bombing, Ashwin returns to Canada to do a psychological study of the survivors and their grief. He decides to keep his own loss a secret as he conducts the interviews.

Take a trip through space and time

It's rare to find a book that is so vivid, that it not only paints images in your brain, but conjures up memories you are convinced you had. The Floating Theatre Troupe

The Ohio River was a boundary separating free and slave states in pre-Civil War Ohio. In 1838, May Bedloe, seamstress and dresser, boarded the steamboat Moselle with cousin Comfort Vertue. Comfort was traveling with May to St. Louis seeking new acting opportunities. Unfortunately, the Moselle was doomed when four boilers exploded. Chaos ensued and May, swimming to shore, was unable to locate Comfort. Days later, May discovered that Comfort was being housed by Mrs. Howard, a wealthy abolitionist. Mrs. Howard thought Comfort was ideally suited to speak at abolitionist rallies. After all, a trained actress could sway a crowd. Mrs. Howard convinces Comfort that May needs to be independent and would love living on her own. Nothing could be further from the truth.

May Bedloe, 22 years old, is socially backward, literal and has a straight forward nature. May derives comfort from sewing a perfectly straight hemline. She believes that a good costume helps an actor feel his or her part. Sewing makes her forget the unfamiliar, strange world she has entered. Mrs. Howard pushes May to leave for home by giving her twenty dollars for the fare. May takes the money but has nowhere to go. Looking for work along the Ohio River, she notices The Floating Theatre, a two -story flatbed boat. One of the most immersive and heatfelt war books

Where does Battle Scars rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I'm relatively new to audiobooks, but this was one of the most amazing books I've read or listened to in my entire life. I'm shipping off to train to be a Combat Medic in the US Army in just a few weeks so this book really hit home. Mr. Salkin really knew how to approach the subject. I really liked the character Sergeant Deke, as that's the kind of guy I hope to be, in terms of being able to project a winning attitude into others, even when they think there's no hope left.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Battle Scars?

After the book sets out to immerse you in the lifestyle and psyche of the marines deployed in Afghanistan, the book diverts into the personal relationships between the soldiers and their own thoughts and struggles, sealing them in the iron-clad brotherhood that develops between "battle buddies," in a warzone. I don't want to spoil anymore of the book, but if you have read titles such as Soldier X or Fallen Angels, you'll know what I mean when I say this book gets really emotional, and I found myself tearing up during several parts of the narration.

Have you listened to any of John Alan Martinson Jr. and Phoenix T. Clark s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Martinson did an excellent job exhibiting the emotion of the dialogue between the characters in the book, as well as the general and dynamic atmosphere in the narration. If Clark was the female nurse in the book, it really adds to the contrast of environments that she is featured in, so it adds a really nice touch which maintains the immersion of the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried some, chuckled some, and felt like I was really there the whole time.

Any additional comments?

I'm glad titles like this are out there, so that people can gather some level of insight as to what our veterans have gone through; much respect to the author and narrator.

An Honorable Service to Wounded Veterans

Mr. Salkin has done an exceptional job of capturing the inner-battle that goes on in the mind of a man who has lost close friends, while also illustrating the physical anguish of having been severely wounded.
