She, refusing to spend one more day peddling herself for cheesy TV sitcom parts, disappears. He turns his back on a hedonistic life making blockbuster action flicks with names like Mega Force.
Shedding their self-made identities, each sets out on an uncharted course across the Gap-clogged, strip-mall landscape of Los Angeles, searching for the one thing - love - that neither has ever really known, but that they now think they just might, actually, desperately want. How could they not find each other?
    Critic Reviews:
"Picture Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut collaborating on a Tinseltown version of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and you come halfway to grasping Coupland's brand of thoughtful, supremely funny storytelling." (Amazon.com)

    zen? Hollywood zen lite?
This is a cute, humourous story, well worth the moderate download price for its entertainment value, but it's hardly the Zen inspired masterpiece the Amazon review quoted in the product info suggests. Neither is it up to par with other Coupland novels.
It's a tale of two hollywood types with strange childhoods grapling with "second half of life" identity issues. Coupland's humour, snappy prose, plus an added plot mystery make the story better than an average chick or lad lit identity crisis, and the characters do try to come to terms with the unpseaking universe, but don't expect heavy philosophy or a zen koan.

    Publisher's Summary:
In a small town outside Istanbul, Sinan Basioglu, a devout Muslim, and his wife, Nilufer, are preparing for their nine-year-old son's coming-of-age ceremony. Their headstrong 15-year-old daughter, Irem, resents the attention her brother, Ismail, receives from their parents. For her, there was no such festive observance - only the wrapping of her head in a dark scarf and strict rules that keep her hidden away from boys and her friends.
But even before the night of the celebration, Irem has started to change, to the dismay of her Kurdish father. What Sinan doesn't know is that much of her transformation is due to her secret relationship with their neighbor, Dylan, the 17-year-old American son of expatriate teachers. Irem sees Dylan as the gateway to a new life, one that will free her from the confines of conservative Islam. Yet the young man's presence and Sinan's growing awareness of their relationship affirms Sinan's wish to move his family to the safety of his old village, a place where his children would be sheltered from the cosmopolitan temptations of Istanbul, and where, as the civil war in the south wanes, he hopes to raise his children in the Kurdish tradition.
When a massive earthquake hits in the middle of the night, the Basioglu family is faced with greater challenges, however. Losing everything, they are forced to forage for themselves, living as refugees in their own country. And their survival becomes dependent on their American neighbors, to whom they are unnervingly indebted. As love develops between Irem and Dylan, Sinan makes a series of increasingly dangerous decisions that push him toward a betrayal that will change everyone's lives forever.

Save it for the Book Clubs
Gardens of Water will make a great book club book. It is sad from start to finish, no one really changes. This book is more or less a snap shot. There is no closer. Book clubs will love it. I did not find it my cup of tea.

    terrible narrator
Surely there is a narrator out there who can pronounce Turkish names and words without making us cringe
    Heart Wrenching
Very "today" with heart wrenching dialogue. Reader excellent enabling the reader to truly feel the moments.
Everything you could want in a story.
Because this was Alan Drew's writing debut, I am sure I will be looking forward to reading future stories written by him. The "Gardens of Water" was excellent. I like historical fictions and he did an excellent job at providing that in this story.
Because of current conflicts in the Middle East, it was easy to understand what was revealed in this novel: the conflicts between cultures and religion and age. This is a beautiful but sad story and will have you pondering our multicultural world.
The narrator, Mark Bramhall, was perfect for this story and did an awesome job!

Only one man can help her, a survivor of the Massacre, and now a visiting professor at the prestigious university of Todai in Tokyo; a man who is rumoured to possess documentary evidence of Nanking. But first Grey must gain his trust. Increasingly desperate and alone, she accepts a job as a hostess at the "Some Like It Hot" club, an upmarket nightspot catering for Japanese businessmen and wealthy gangsters. One gangster dominates, an old man in a wheelchair guarded by a nurse with sharpened teeth, said to rely on a powerful elixir for his continued wealth and well-being. Thriller...
An excellent thriller, set in Japan, with a fascinating central character. It works really well with two narrators (one male, one female), both of whom are excellent. Gripping, though some may find it gory in parts.
    Great story, great narrators.
I read this book a few years ago and enjoyed it a lot. Listening to this audible version was an even better experience. Mo Hayder writes an intelligent thriller which keeps you hooked all the way and both the narrators were perfect for their roles. The last part of the book is really exiting and made a 6 hour bus trip fly buy. Really recommend you to listen to this.
A real page turner - so to speak.
This audiobook had me listening at every opportunity - it would be a real page turner if I had bought a hard copy. The story sucks you in immediately and the audiobooks ability to reveal information piece by piece is what makes it compulsive. The story centres around a young woman searching for information concerning her specialist field of interest; the Nanking Massacre, and an aged Chinese
Professor. Their stories become inter-twinned with the Professor's personal recollections of Nanking forming context and vital back story for the plot. Throw in the Japanese Yakuza, some vivid characters and a excellent dialogue and you have 'Tokyo'. Although violent at times - which can be expected when reviewing the subject matter - this story strikes a balance between a gripping haunting thriller and a tale of compassion and loss. Don't misunderstand me, there is humour to be found, and you can't help but grow attached to many of the characters, but at its roots this audiobook is a good old fashioned thriller. Don't hesitate - give it a listen.
    A Gritty and Compelling Thriller
This is a gritty and compelling thriller that immerses you in an exciting, exotic and seedy world. Written from two perspectives, the narration of both Bert Kwouk and Emily Woof are superb. The main character, Grey Hutchins, is quirky but very likable. The rest of the characters are also rather quirky but with a characterisc charm that is again, very likable. Be warned though ? this is not for the faint hearted! This is a gritty thriller that gets down and dirty! This was my first Mo Hayder novel and I?ve become a huge fan of her books ever since.

    Language: English
    Release date: 04-12-06
    Publisher: Random House Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Tyler Caskey has come to love West Annett, "just up the road" from where he was born. The short, brilliant summers and the sharp, piercing winters fill him with awe, as does his congregation, full of good people who seek his guidance and listen earnestly as he preaches. But after suffering a terrible loss, Tyler finds it hard to return to himself as he once was. He hasn't had The Feeling, that God is all around him, in the beauty of the world, for quite some time. He struggles to find the right words in his sermons and in his conversations with those facing crises of their own, and to bring his five-year-old daughter, Katherine, out of the silence she has observed in the wake of the family's tragedy.
A congregation that had once been patient and kind during Tyler's grief now questions his leadership and propriety. In the kitchens, classrooms, offices, and stores of the village, anger and gossip have started to swirl. And in Tyler's darkest hour, a startling discovery will test his congregation's humanity, and his own will to endure the kinds of trials that sooner or later test us all.
In prose incandescent and artful, Elizabeth Strout draws readers into the details of ordinary life in a way that makes it extraordinary. All is considered, life, love, God, and community, within these pages, and all is made new by this writer's boundless compassion and graceful prose.
    Critic Reviews:

    All is grace.
As I read this tale of a minister facing life and feeling lost, I thought of Georges Bernanosâ novel, DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST, which closes with the words âAll is grace.â Facing what feels like failure and weakness, the minister finally realizes the truth of life. âRemarkable.â
Another of Elizabeth Strout's beautifully and poetically-written books
Another of Elizabeth Strout's beautifully and poetically-written books. Her characters are complex and her writing is elegant. I was completely captivated by the reverend who was the religiously-conflicted and all-too-human main character. His relationships were not at all predictable and the picture of a congregation that was equally conflicted about him, seemed highly realistic. This is a gem. Sadly, I have read all of Elizabeth Strout's books and I can only hope there will be more. She is a gifted and moving writer.
    I loved it
Even in this early book Strout fills her work with full characters, giving glimpses into the depths of sorrow and richness of normal people living in normal situations. I loved it.
    I highly recommend this book!
Absolutely beautifully written. I have read all of E. Strout's books and this one was her first, I believe. It is a treasure.
    Moving and thought-provoking
I read this because I had just finished two other of Elizabeth Strout's novels, and really enjoyed them. I found this book equally rich and rewarding. Her characters are deep, real people, all conflicted and aflicted but finding in the end a way to transcend their differences by pulling together and drawing on their community of people for love, support, understanding and forgiveness.

    Publisher's Summary:
Suddenly Dannie's fairy tale comes to an end. A rich newcomer to Truro builds a hideous "trophy house" down the beach from the Fabers', irritating the town's inhabitants before he's even moved in and setting off shock waves that erupt in a nasty racial incident. With an unfortunate turn of events, Dannie's life begins to unravel. Beth loses her boyfriend and quits her job, her best friend falls in love with the owner of the "trophy house", and Dannie's own marriage falls apart.
    Critic Reviews:
"[An] astute, witty romance, beguilingly set in the Cape Cod towns of Truro and Provincetown....Readers will bond with Bernays's prickly, opinionated, bighearted heroine." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Trophy House
I got it mostly because Anne Bernays (the recent widow of a wonderful guy named Kaplan is interesting. However, the book was boring. I'll put it in my Good Will box. Thanks for sending it, however. It's not your fault it was a dud or that I don't think well of it.
    disappointing
I purchased this book in part because it was supposed to be part "thriller". In fact, there is no mystery and no thriller. The crime happens early in the story, and thereafter pretty much disappears. It is not what the book is about. That would have been OK if the story was a strong one. But, as other reviewers have mentioned, there is really no emotional depth to any of the characters, including Dannie. There is no exploration of what makes any of the characters behave the way they do, and so the dissolution of Dannie's marriage has about as much feeling to it as a decision to go out to dinner. I was also dumbfounded by Dannie's observation that her daughter's new boyfriend must have a blue-collar background, because of his large hands. Dannie could not be that dumb. Finally, the title of the book -- "Trophy House"- actually has little to do with the story. The house is in the story, but is not particularly important.
    Vapid
My personal rating system for films often gets me to a negative number based on ticket price--for example, an $8 film can get a rating from $8 to minus $8. I gave this novel a high negative number. I review nonfiction, mostly business books, so when I read fiction it is for enjoyment. This novel puzzled me...nothing to it, who are these people and who cares? It seems like it was a series of short stories, disconnected and unfinished. I was miffed at myself for reading to the bitter end, but as I was closing the book I thought of two words: vapid and insipid. I looked up the meaning of those words to be sure they described my sense of this book. Yup, they do. So all is not lost. It took me half a day to learn a couple new words.
    NOT IMPRESSED
I thought this book was superficial and not very well written. There was virtually no emotion shown by the characters. They divorced and remarried in record time, and with nothing more than a vague nod to feelings. The back story of vandalism was ridiculously underdeveloped, as was virtually everything else in this book. I'd pass.
    Irritating
If I hadn't been stuck on a five hour flight I never would have finished this ....There was no reason for her political rantings and the plot was silly...so much for book reviews, reader reviews are always better...

    Small Town Love Letter
This book weaves a story in and around and through the lives of the residents of Sutter's Creek. The author introduces us to characters quite thoroughly, exposing strengths and failings. Faith is key to the narrative: strong faith, weak faith, and faith that is nonexistent. It's a powerful story, one that made me think twice about many things, especially relationships. When I'm finished posting here, I'll be looking for something else by this author. Very solid writing. Five stars, for sure!
    A Grand Storyteller
I discovered Dale Cramer with his third book, "Levi's Will." I then read his most recent work, "Summer of Light," and was enthralled with the storytelling. Both of those works are about character and people, drawn loosely but expertly from Cramer's own life.
"Sutter's Cross" is different -- it's about a place. The geography of the novel is really the main character, and it took me a while (about 70 pages) to figure that out. Once I did, I went back and reread it from the beginning, and it read very differently. With the characters in almost supporting roles, the book is a story of preservation and development, past and present, faith and ruthlessness, forgiveness and atonement. But it's all grounded in place, and the difference it makes when one is grounded in place and when one isn't.
The heart of the story is a conflict between a developer, Web Holcombe, and the people on the land. Holcombe lets nothing stand in his way, and sees the land as something to be changed and utilized, simply because it can be. Standing in his way is the homeless drifter Harley, who learns how to talk with God as he sits on a ridge named Joshua's Knee (you have to love the name). The reader knows how the story is going to end, but it doesn't matter because Cramer skillfully pulls the reader into the story, becoming part of the place just like the other characters.
    Cramer is one grand storyteller.
    A Journey Through Life
Everyone started from a different place, from totally different beliefs and priorities, but learned from one another what is truly important and how to work together in love once they let go. Loved that so many different kinds of people were brought together...different journeys diverging.
Loved the audio enough to buy a print copy
I loved listening to this book on audio so much that I ordered a print copy. I loved the characters. Loved the many ways the author plants items earlier in the story that have an impact on the ending. Well-written and hard to put down. I'll be reading more of Mr. Cramer's writing.
This is the fourth Dale Cramer book I've read.
I was pretty sure I would like this book, even though it is his first book, because it's the 4th Dale Cramer book I've read. Well, I was right! He caught my interest from the first page with his graphic descriptions of the characters and the settings.
