    Publisher's Summary:
Born and raised on Bakerton's Polish Hill, the five Novak children come of age during wartime, a thrilling era when the world seems on the verge of changing forever. The oldest, Georgie, serves on a minesweeper in the South Pacific and glimpses life beyond Bakerton, a promising future he is determined to secure at all costs. His sister Dorothy takes a job in Washington, D.C., and finds she is unprepared for city life. Brilliant Joyce becomes the family's keystone, bitterly aware of the opportunities she might have had elsewhere. Sandy sails through life on his looks and charm, and Lucy, the volatile baby, devours the family's attention and develops a bottomless appetite for love.
Baker Towers is a family saga and a love story, a hymn to a time and place long gone, to America's industrial past and the men and women we now call the Greatest Generation. This is a feat of imagination from an extraordinary new voice in American fiction, a writer of enormous power and skill.
    Critic Reviews:
"Rich, enveloping....This novel abounds with satisfyingly real and vivid individuals." (The New York Times)
"[Haigh] writes convincingly of family and smalltown relations, as well as of the intractable frustrations of American poverty." (Publishers Weekly)
"Baker Towers is a novel possessing a rare, quiet power to evoke a time long past and the character of the people who lived then." (Booklist)
"An elegant, elegiac multigenerational saga....Almost mythic in its ambition, somewhere between Oates and Updike country, and thoroughly satisfying." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Very Good Family Saga
Normally not a book I would have purchased it came highly recommended by a friend and was also my introduction to Audible. I was quite surprised to find that I very much enjoyed this story. The reader was excellent and while she does create voices for the characters I did not find it interrupting the flow of the story. She is actually quite good at maintaining consistency from character to character and the audio quality was excellent.
John O'Hare in a minor key
'Baker Towers" is a female centric take on one Polish Italian family whose lives are dominated by the coal mines of Bakerton, Penn. and the two towers of debris that the mines generate. After the death of their father, caused indirectly by the mines, the five Novack children are determined to escape his fate by running as far away as possible. Of course they are not able to go very far without being pulled back by family issues and their own guilt and loneliness. This all takes place during W.W. Two and it's aftermath. America is changing and the role of men and women are changing also. I have read this tale a lot, but usually it doesn't fail to gripe me. This time 'Baber Tower' misses the mark by a mile.
Unlike John O'Hara's best novels about the upwordly strivings people of the working class in the mining towns of Pennsavania, the Novak children are a pretty boring bunch. We watch them go from loveless marriage's to self imposed alienation without generating a flicker of independence. Even after one daughter defies convention and becomes the lover of a divorced man, she does it in such secrecy and with so little passion that it's hard to feel any interest.

    Publisher's Summary:
    Birdie. 1961.
He was the choir director at a Southern Bible college. At practice she followed his hands with her eyes. She imagined his shoulders bare beneath his shirt, his body long and white. One evening he approached her.
    Joan. 1969.
She met him at a pool party in Florida. His lank dark hair hung to his shoulders; he wore faded jeans and a colorful cotton blouse. No man had touched her in a year. He was engaged to someone else.
    Dinah. 1979.
They met by accident in Washington, D.C. Their paths had intersected once before, when she was a teenager. "You're a beautiful girl," he'd told her, oblivious to the hideous scar on her face. He was old enough to be her father.
Kimble is revealed through the eyes of the women he seduces: his first wife, who struggles to hold herself together after his desertion; his second wife, a lonely heiress shaken by personal tragedy, who sees in Kimble her last chance at happiness; and finally Dinah Whitacre, a beautiful but damaged woman half his age. Woven throughout is the story of Kimble's son, Charlie, whose life is forever affected by a father he barely remembers. Ken Kimble is a chameleon, a man able to become, at least for a while, all things to all women. To each of the three Mrs. Kimbles, he appears as a hero to whom powerful needs and nameless longings may be attached. Only later do they glimpse the truth about this elusive, unknowable man.
A captivating exploration of human love, marriage, and the illusions upon which it is founded, Mrs. Kimble presents a fascinating psychological portrait of a mesmerizing opportunist and the women who believe in him. Beautifully wrought, stunningly original, Jennifer Haigh's sparkling debut marks the arrival of a remarkable new talent.

    Enjoyable and interesting
Excellent stor. Kept me interested, and was nice and long (lasted lots of trips to the gym!). I really enjoyed this, written with a very different perspective - not of a man's three wives but of the women married to the same man at different stages of his life. Believable and realistic.
    good book
very fast moving, but ended abruptly with no real ending at all
    Disappointing
Depressing story and seems to go on and on. I kept waiting for something good or exciting to happen. It didn't. In my opinion, I would save my book credit and pick something else.
    Mister Kimble-??
It's an enjoyable book; the characters are vivid and their struggles are real. Yet the main hero of the book -MR. Kimble- remains a mystery. We want to say, he was a bad guy.

    Publisher's Summary:
Meet Julia, a wildly successful television producer who appears to have the picture-perfect life. But beneath the surface, things are not as perfect as they seem. Stuck in a loveless relationship with her boyfriend, Mark, Julia thinks a baby is the answer...but she may want a baby more than she wants her boyfriend. Will a trip to New York City with a jet-setting friend, and all the glittering energy and eligible men the city brings, help her discover what she really needs?
Maeve, on the other hand, is allergic to commitment. A feisty, red-haired, high-power career girl, she cherishes her ability to do just as she pleases and breaks out in a rash every time she passes a stroller. But when her no-strings-attached nightlife leads to an unexpected pregnancy, her reaction may be just as unexpected. And then there's Samantha, happily married and eager to be the perfect June Cleaver-esque mother. But baby George brings only exhaustion, extra pounds, and marital strife to her once tidy life. Is having an affair with a friend's incredibly sexy husband the answer?
By turns witty, rollicking, and tender, Babyville isn't really a story about babies, it's about three friends whose lives are suddenly turned upside-down by that life-changing event that hangs over the head of every girl: motherhood.

    entertaining
I usually hate chick books, but this one wasn't so bad. Jane Green is a decent writer, so it's not like you have to suffer through it the way you would if you tried listening to The Time Traveler's Wife. If you're up for non-suspensful, easy-to-follow, sex-in-the-city-type entertainment, then this will suit your needs perfectly. And, as an added bonus, the narrator is good.

    Publisher's Summary:
In many ways, Niles is as American as apple pie: raised by ultra-protective missionary parents, taught to honor and respect his elders and be an upright Christian citizen. But Niles is also Japanese: reared in the aesthetics of Shinto and educated in the dance halls and backroom poker gatherings of Tokyo's shady underworld. As a gaijin, a foreigner - especially one with a gift for the artful scam - he draws suspicion and disfavor from Japanese police. This potent mixture of stiff tradition and intrigue - not to mention his brazen love affair with a Japanese mistress who would rather kill Harry than lose him - fills Harry's final days in Tokyo with suspense and fear. Who is he really working for? Is he a spy? For America? For the Emperor?
Now, on the eve of Pearl Harbor, Harry himself must decide where his true allegiances lie. Suspenseful, exciting, and replete with the detailed research Martin Cruz Smith is famous for, December 6 is a triumph of imagination, history and storytelling melded into a magnificent whole.
    Critic Reviews:
"A superb thriller and a remarkable evocation of a place....A moving, believable love story in which individual lives are invested with great dignity, even in the face of national ideals." (Booklist, Starred Review)
"Martin Cruz Smith is a master of the international thriller." (The New York Times Book Review)
"The pace is like a bullet train, the characters are limned far beyond the usual stereotype, and the locale is as evocative as the cherry blossom itself." (Library Journal)

No substitute for the book, but not bad.
Martin Cruz Smith has been one of my favorite authors since I discovered his work in the early 90's. His novels are filled with memorable characters, sharp dialogue, and particularly good narrative--Cruz Smith has a real gift for "describing the moment".
I rushed to buy December 6 in hardback the first week it hit stores, and I enjoyed the book thoroughly. I decided to purchase the audiobook because I wanted to revisit the story, and also because I was curious as to how well the novel would translate. Unfortunately, the audiobook has several flaws.
It dispenses with chapter indicators, opting instead for long pauses. This is unnecessarily confusing, given the frequent changes in location / flashbacks that are integral to the plot.
The narrator, John Slattery, does a good job with the "foreign" characters--Harry Niles, Willie Staub, Al DeGeorge--but he inexplicably gives the Japanese characters pseudo-Japanese accents. As just one example, Cruz Smith's "Long Beach Oil" becomes "Rong Beach Oil". Often what was rapier wit on the page becomes caricature to the ear.
This abridged version also makes some puzzling edits. Great chunks of text are cut, only to be referred to later. Towards the end of the audiobook, a character asks: "Remember that song 'Amazing Grace?'" Well, you wouldn't--that part was cut from the audio. Too bad, since a song would seem a perfect opportunity for an audiobook to _improve_ on the original.
I would strongly recommend that people new to Cruz Smith start by reading one of his books, but in the end, enough of the original text shines through. I liked this production, despite its faults, and I suspect other Cruz Smith fans will like it as well.

This book was not at all what I expected.

    Publisher's Summary:
Vermont, the present. On the heels of a divorce, Catherine Hubbard, Georgia's granddaughter, takes up residence in Georgia's old house. Sorting through her own affairs, Cath stumbles upon the true story of Georgia's life and marriage, and of the misunderstanding upon which she built a lasting love.
With the tales of these two women - one a country doctor's wife with a haunting past, the other a twice-divorced San Francisco schoolteacher casting about at midlife for answers to her future - Millers offers us a novel of astonishing richness and emotional depth. Linked by bitter disappointments, compromise, and powerful grace, the lives of Georgia and Cath begin to seem remarkably similar, despite their distinctly different times: two young girls, generations apart, motherless at nearly the same age, thrust into early adulthood, struggling with confusing bonds of attachment and guilt; both of them in marriages that are not what they seem, forced to make choices that call into question the very nature of intimacy, faithfulness, betrayal, and love.
    Critic Reviews:
"Unfailingly artful...Miller has never written better." (The New York Times)

5 enthusiastic stars- compelling, a joy to read
The World Below was among the most spirited, insightful, and engaging books I've read/heard in a long time. I found that the somewhat tired story of a tired mom, empty-nested and nearly joyless (save the phone calls and visits with her adult children) was made fresh again by Miller's thoughtful prose, layered plot, and generational shifts of narratorial perspective.
The main character is a 50-something woman who can't shake the feeling that she is in some way abnormal, partly stemming from a disappointing childhood abruptly shortened by the demands of a mentally ill mother. What's more, she feels she has fallen short of the expectations thrust upon her by two ex-husbands, and with believable self-doubt she ponders how in the world she had become "one of those women" with two failed marriages.
It happens that she must decide the fate of her grandparents' home. It is a family duty which affords her, if nothing else, something useful to do that is refreshingly removed from her current state of affairs. When she visits the estate- packed with dusty artifacts of family history-- she slowly begins piecing together the chronology of a mysterious and taboo period in her late grandmother's life. As she struggles to make sense of terse diary entries, she is both intrigued and somehow strengthened by what she learns of her grandmother's imperfect past.
For me, it was fascinating to glimpse the grandmother's life as a patient in an early 1900's sanitorium. Also interesting was the friendship which developed between the (present day) granddaughter and an elderly neighbor-- a chivalrous gentlemen who had been a diligent "caretaker" of the quaint New England home.
Miller is masterful in the art of character development; even minor characters are infused with personality and are strikingly believable. It is a thoughtful story of self-discovery and personal growth, of familial strengths and the flaws which must always coexist.
    One of My Favorites
Enjoyed the complexities of this book and a glimpse into a past unspoken world similar to my own mother's.

    Don't Bother
I've found very few books to which I found no value and simply could not listen and extract something from it. The Running Mate gets added to this list. I've stuggled to listen to the first 4 hours, but only the first 15 minutes had any value. Because of my interest in politics I found the description intriguing. Trust me, that's the only thing that IS intriguing about this book. Add to the boring plot (if you can call it that) that the audio is poor quality. At some points it's very loud, other points it's very soft. Of course we are lucky we don't hear the reader of the book snoring. Boring, boring, boring. Where's the plot? What's interesting about this book? Audio should give back the listener credit for anyone who downloaded this book. I'm moving on to something more interesting.
    Need more...
This is one of those books where I want more. What is next for Charlie Martin? Does Jack Stanton get a second term? Does Moustaffa get his name cleared? Mr. Klien - don't leave me dangling!

    Publisher's Summary:
Once a successful surgeon, Frederick Welin now lives in self-imposed exile on an island in the Swedish archipelago. Nearly twelve years have passed since he was disgraced for attempting to cover up a tragic mishap on the operating table. One morning in the depths of winter, he sees a hunched figure struggling towards him across the ice. His past is about to catch up with him.
The figure approaching in the freezing cold is Harriet, the only woman he has ever loved, the woman he abandoned in order to go and study in America forty years earlier. She has sought him out in the hope that he will honour a promise made many years ago. Now in the late stages of a terminal illness, she wants to visit a small lake in northern Sweden, a place Welin's father took him once as a boy. He upholds his pledge and drives her to this beautiful pool hidden deep in the forest. On the journey through the desolate snow-covered landscape, Welin reflects on his impoverished childhood and the woman he later left behind.
However, once there Welin discovers that Harriet has left the biggest surprise until last.Italian Shoes is as compelling as it is disturbing. Through his anti-hero Welin, Mankell tackles ageing and death with sensitivity and acuity, and as with the critically acclaimed Depths, delivers a moving tour-de-force on the frailty of mankind.

    Mankell shows his humanity again
Sean Barrett is a truly gifted Narrator and, once again, he takes Mankell readers on a deeply moving, original and authentic exploration of the human condition. Mankell understands the inner-worlds we all inhabit without being diverted into cliche or indulgence. His descriptions of the Swedish landscape and season augment the narrative beautifully. Highly recommended.
    Surprising and Profound
I have just finished listening to this extraordinary book. It is unlike anything else I have read by Henning Mankell and I loved it. It is a story of lives meeting, parting and intersecting; of love, trust, betrayal and forgiveness, which provokes and moves. Mankell has created a work that challenges predjudice and pre-conception and which generously salutes our shared humanity but he does so with his usual vigour so we are never bored. Brilliant. I salute too the narrator Sean Barrett who reads beautifully and with his usual intelligence and understanding.
I also want to get my feet into some of those Italian Shoes!
    An exceptional book...
After having finished reading Henning Mankell's novel "Depths" a few months ago, I felt strangely sad because I had the feeling that this exceptional book would probably be just a one-off by the Wallander author. However, with "Italian Shoes" Mankell did it again. Although about aging, sickness and death, this novel is extraordinarily positive and in parts even funny. The warmth of this introspective tale of an old man who gets finally confronted with a past he fled long ago is superbly enhanced by Sean Barrett?s powerful narration and, of course, Laurie Thompson?s excellent English translation. With "Italian Shoes", Mankell is once again on par with his Nordic peers Jostein Gaarder, Peter Hoeg or even Knut Hamsun.

    Publisher's Summary:
Stephen Fry's charmingly misanthropic send-up of the English mystery features an unlikely but necessary hero: Ted Wallace, AKA the Hippopotamus, a failed and disolute poet, recently fired theater critic, and muckraker of modern irrationality, whose war against the unreasonable finds sudden purpose investigating a series of supposed miracles at a mansion in the country.
"I've suffered for my art, now it's your turn." So begins the tale of Ted Wallace, unaffectionately known as the Hippopotamus. Failed poet, failed theater critic, failed father and husband, Ted is a shameless womanizer, drinks too much, and is at odds in his cranky but maddeningly logical way with most of modern life. Fired from his newspaper, Ted seeks a few months' repose and free liquor at Swafford Hall, the country mansion of his old friend Michael Logan. This world of boozy dinners, hunting parties, and furtive liaisons has recently been turned on its head by miracles, healings, and phenomena beyond Ted's comprehension. As the mysteries deepen, The Hippopotamus builds into "a deliciously wicked and amusing little fable" (The New York Times).

Sex with a child and the rape of a horse...
Brilliant wordsmithing is not an excuse for scenes of adults having sex with a child, or of a child raping a horse. These things happen in this book and the storytelling around them is a thin veil for something simply vile. This is only one of two books I have ever thrown in the garbage.
I have admired Stephen Fry and this was to say the least, sick making.
but in between telling a good the story
I have been a fan of Stephen Fry from his days in BLACK ADDER and as a comedy team with Hugh Laurie. This is a light read, but in between telling a good the story, he takes time to skewer what is the beginning of the politically correct movement.
The third Stephen Fry novel I've read and he has ...
The third Stephen Fry novel I've read and he has such an odd style. It's an amusing read with some very apt and related Britishisms.
    Funnier than Wodehouse!
I would like to marry the person in whom resides such a mind as the author's, but Fry and I bat for different teams. But I am a huge fan. Every word is delightful. I urge you to run out and (okay, push whatever buttons will help you to) buy this book if you enjoy being amused and delighted with every turn of the page.
    Witty and clever
A very witty story on the question of science and religion. At first it may seem excessively vulgar, but read it to the end and all things will fall into place, showing religious fanaticism as "ignorant vulgarity". There is some measure of redemption to be found in both reason and reconciliation.
