Great book for my 7 year old
Great book for my 7 year old. Starting to read so he will transition to reading it himself in the next year or so
Funny and Inspirational
From the imagination of a young man with Down syndrome, comes âBlack Day,â a fascinating story that is bound to live in the hearts of readers for years to come.
First, the author is creative and funny. He has managed to tell a story with illustrations that will appeal to children and adults from all walks of life.
Hereâs what I found fascinating.
First, the author is a young adult with Down syndrome. He thinks up a fun story that is relatable. But it doesnât stop there. It skillfully captures the depth of Down syndrome without using Down syndrome as the focal point. What many fail to understand about people who have DS is that they are deep thinkers. If there is a preconceived notion about the ability of a person with Down syndrome to be creative, this will silence the naysayers.
Second, the story is set in a Halloween theme. Again, it shows the depth of the authorâs storytelling abilities. There is much about Halloween that is scary. For most, approaching a group that is already formed would be scary. What if they are rejected?
But the main character, a paperboy named Brad, is fearless. He has no fear of Halloween, or of characters who look scary, and certainly has no fear of the other kids, who have formed a rock band. He only knows that he wants to belong. So he just marches right up and announces that he wants to participate. Like many people with DS, Brad sees no reason whatsoever why he shouldnât be accepted. Any why not? He has no idea that he isnât good enough until someone tells him differently. At first he is snubbed. Brad knows they are wrong about him, so he just has to show them what he can do.
And this is where the story becomes delightfully realistic while maintaining its fantasy. Anyone who has a loved one with Down knows that these individuals are relentless. If they think you donât âget it,â they keep at it until you learn to bend. They find a way. And thatâs what the character does in the story with its inspiring theme of ânever give up.â
No spoilers here, just a sincere invitation all parents, to read this to their children, and especially any child who has a fear of belonging or needs to believe in themselves. When you believe in yourself, good things can happen. Marcus obviously knows this. He sure knows how to share it with others.
but I am SO glad that I did
I don't remember how I stumbled upon this book, but I am SO glad that I did! My 4.5 year old nephew, who dreams of rock bands on a daily basis, has declared it "The best book of all time!" In the five days after receiving it he has read it about 30 times. When it was missing for 20 minutes my nephew nearly had a panic attack.
I do hope that there are more adventures in store for this cast of characters. And my nephew REALLY wants to see Hammer JR. For some reason he has a lot of curiosity about that character.
