Language: English
Release date: 03-03-09

Publisher's Summary:
Being sick is no fun, and the thoughtful story When Vera Was Sick perfectly captures the tedium and discomfort of Vera's illness, as well as her family's loving attempts to console her. Listeners will share Vera's joy at the end when she finally feels well enough to go outside and play!
In Vera Runs Away, first-grader Vera feels under-appreciated when she comes home with straight A's and her family is too busy to notice. When she returns home, it is to a warm welcome and an apology, but also to a gentle lesson that "When you do well, you are doing well for yourself."

Best of the "Vera" books
There are lots of "Vera" books, but by far this is the best. For me it's because I don't have to do any editing when I read it. A few of the Roseberry books have some issues with language that I don't necessarily want to introduce to my kids (other kids saying mean things to Vera, not being nice, etc) so this book is one that I can buy over and over again to give as gifts to my neices and nephews, and for birthday party gifts.
This book is about Vera getting the chicken pox and how her family takes care of her and she eventually gets well. I loved the part where her mother got down the "kitty", the bed pillow that only comes down from the closet shelf when you are sick, and it smells like grandma. Very nice imageery.
The author writes and illustrates, which sometimes can be quirky but the kids LOVE the illustrations, really keeps them captivated. If you do buy her others, just leave out the mean stuff, it's just not necessary.
My kids love Vera, who doesn't?
I don't like that it is somewhat scary in the beginning
I don't like that it is somewhat scary in the beginning. I have to skip the page about ghosts coming out of the wallpaper when I read this to my toddler.
A bit scary
This is a very nice book, about a little girl who gets very sick and has to stay in bed for several days. The images are beautiful, the story well written. My almost 4 year old son is fascinated by this book. However, there was a part in the book where she is "hallucinating" and the flowers on the wallpaper are looking like witch faces coming out at her. My son was very curious and scared by this page and talked about it for days, even had some nightmares. However, he still asked us to read him the book. We took a break from it, had some talks about "imagination" and now we are able to read it and he seems comfortable with it.
Vera Books
I logged on Amazon to see if this book is still available. I bought this book in 1999 for my sister whose name is Vera. At the time I bought it at Barnes and Noble in my area for $15.07 ( with a $1.60 discount from the original price and including tax). At $7.95 on Amazon, it is a bargain. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there are other "Vera" books, too, which I don't remember being available back in 1999.
my daughter ADORES this book
At ages 4 & 5, my daughter absolutely adores this book, wants us to read it to her over and over. It really resonates with her for some reason! We love the illustrations. A sweet, simple, old-fashioned story about getting sick, feeling awful, being cared for, and getting better.
