Editorial Reviews:
Justin Krebs, co-founder of the Living Liberally organization, sees no contradiction in having a socially progressive and responsible lifestyle while also having fun, and he provides valuable tips on how to extend political beliefs into daily routine. Peter Johnson's gentle performance allows for a good humor and lightness even while instructing on such conscientious manners as composting or advocating for greener business practices at the workplace. 538 Ways to Live, Work, and Play Like a Liberal proves the old adage that "the personal is political", showing the listener how to translate liberal values to all facets of life.
Members Reviews:
A Completely Impartial and Unbiased Review
(which will be hard because, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm in the book)
538 Ways may sound like a catalog of rules that nobody could live up to, when it is anything but. Krebs weaves a narrative of culture, family, history, and experience that speeds along without getting bogged down in some sort of dry checklist. This is no prescriptive manual for living as a liberal. It is a helpful dialog of the many ways that liberal ideology can be seamlessly woven into our lives in ways that feel effortless.
Just like the concept behind Drinking Liberally, Justin's approach is relaxed, easy-going, and non-confrontational. There is not a single "Thou Shalt" to be found. For example, many of us work in companies that frown upon partisan political activity. No problem -- you can instead focus your liberal activism in a GOTV direction. If your family is not ready for a full vegan lifestyle, there's plenty of other ways to demonstrate your liberal ideology in the way you shop, share, and grow food. A wide range of approaches and ideas is presented for each aspect of our daily routines.
If you consider yourself to be a liberal, an independent-minded moderate, or even a socially and environmentally aware conservative, you will find plenty of ideas in this book to gently align your life with your principles.
[And if you don't have time to read the whole book right away, I recommend skipping to Ways #298 and #502- 509.]
Humanity
We all need this guide and we can all be inspired, whether we're liberal, moderate, moderately conservative, or even "libertarian," as long as we have humanity (or are willing to admit it)!
Energizing and Useful!
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I received this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of useful and informative tips that remain prescient today. It also rejuvenated me in being a liberal, because I get so tired of working on elections and seeing good liberals lose. There are lots of ways to be a liberal and this book reminded me of that and made me feel better about some of things I already do, as well as provide a lot of great tips about things I could be doing to help leave a positive mark on the world.
It's a worthwhile and easy read!
I feel better already...
Justin removes the "Liberal guilt" that many of us feel for not being green enough.
