Publisher's Summary:
Meet Stephen Florida: college student, amateur wrestler, visionary, outsider.
Entering senior year, his sights are set on the championships. Every practice, every match, is a step closer to greatness yet also a step further from reality. Profane, manic and tipping into the uncanny, this is Florida's chronicle of loneliness, obsession and the drive to leave a mark.
With echoes of The Art of Fielding and the film Foxcatcher, Gabe Habash's daring, revelatory debut journeys into the mind of a young man teetering between control and rage, grief and elation, genius and insanity.
Critic Reviews:
"A coming-of-age story with its own, often explosive, rhythm and velocity.... This is a shape-shifter of a book, both a dark ode to the mysteries and landscapes of the American West and a complex and convincing character study." (Hanya Yanagihara, author of A Little Life)
"Stephen Florida is an unforgettable addition to the canon of great literary eccentrics. At once a chronicle of obsession, a philosophical treatise, and a deeply affecting love story, this singular novel is perhaps most profoundly an anatomy of American loneliness. Gabe Habash is a writer of powerful gifts, and this is a wonderful book." (Garth Greenwell, author of What Belongs to You)
"In Gabe Habash's hands, Stephen Florida is utterly engrossing. The compelling voice of this book drew me in right away, and it wasn't long before this character was a real person to me, and someone who I found myself loving and rooting for." (Dan Chaon, author of Ill Will)

Compelling narrator.
What a compelling book. Irritating at times, but I couldn't put it down. Such a complex, fully developed character. I loved how I often had to decide whether or not or how much I could believe the narrator. At times, I wasn't sure if all the jumping around and tangential stuff was necessary to show how Stephen Florida was thinking. At times I thought it was overdone and an excuse for not writing better. But, I'm glad that I read the book and I've thought about it a lot since the last page. At some point, I'm sure that I'll read it again.
There's been lots of discussion about the ending. I like that the author leaves some things vague. I think, in a way, it's like a Rorschach ink blot test which tells more about the observer than the ink blot.
A fantastic book about obsession
A fantastic book about obsession, in this case in the form of a college wrestler. But you needn't follow wrestling (I don't) at all to recognize a debut novelist who is adding a truly unique voice and character -- i.e. Stephen Florida -- to modern literature.
Superb
One of the best novels you'll read all year.
Gabe Habash is going to have a great literary career!
âA novel by Gabe Habash. A troubled college wrestler in North Dakota falls in love and becomes increasingly unhinged during his final season. â
This description did not appeal to me until I heard Habash read the first page of his debut novel and then learned he knew nothing about wrestling nor North Dakota when he started this novel. Habash has talent and I recommend this debut novel to all my MostlyFiction friend.
Great debut that gets inside the mind of a singularly-devoted ...
Great debut that gets inside the mind of a singularly-devoted athlete, on a quest for self-actualization on his own terms.
