    Good listen!
What did you love best about Stories of the Heart?
I listen while I work Good listen!
What did you like best about this story?
    It was all good!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. Took a few sessions. I listen mainly at work. My work is mudane. Listening to books helps to time pass.
Debbie, read by Therese, Great! Others, terrible!
Debbie Macomber's story, read by Therese Plummer was good. It wasn't their BEST work, but it was fine for a novella.
Brenda Novak's story, read by Gayle Hendrix was TERRIBLE!!! The narrator had a shrill tone with most of the characters... I came to hate the best friend and the mother. Additionally, the plot was extremely implausible.
Meryl Sawyer's story, read by Bailey Carr was almost painful. The narrator had a very immature voice. Even though the story was set in Texas, the accents vacillated between a severe texas drawl and a "Boston nasal short-A system"; but it ALWAYS had a whine to it!
Two-thirds of the book was PAINFUL to listen.

    Excellent
Carlos Fuentes has a really dark way of telling this stories, and he did a really good job speaking about the reality that we live in Mexico, Jimmy did an outstanding job acting the voices he gets really into de characters, in my opinion the book is great but I didn't care much about the last stories because aren't really controversial or special, but it gets really interesting when bad things happen he make you empathize with almost all the messed up characters, overall is a great book to listen or read.
The way mexican families develop is well documents

"The most incredible one-person audio you have heard. Has to be heard to be believed. David Ian Davies creates theatre in a book." (Charles Prepolec, one of the most respected Sherlockians)

    Sherlock Holmes
A man goes to get a very popular job at a very well to do company. Before he goes for his interview, he's offered a job by another company. One that he has never heard of before. He decides to accept the position anyways. Upon arriving at the job, he suspects something odd. So he asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate for him.
I want to know how I had never read Sherlock Holmes before? To be fair, I've never really watched the movies or any television shows related to it either. I've heard of it for a long time. I could say that I'm quite familiar with it.
I'm about to give a very unpopular opinion here I'm sure. While I find the Sherlock Holmes stories very entertaining and humorous, I don't see what the beig hype about them is. I mean they are cute. They are witty. But some of the stories lack a substance I really feel they need. They should be a little more drawn out. I feel a lot of the story is left up to the imagination of the reader.
Either way, I recommend this book. Sherlock Holmes is a classic. I fully believe all classic novels need to be read at least once in a lifetime. It's not a horrible story. It's just not really a story that I can get super excited about I guess. I liked it, but I didn't love it.
    An Entertaining short short
An entertaining Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson short story mystery. Enjoy reading

    Members Reviews:
Patrick Tull narrates five of the six tales,
doing a very good job as the voice of Rumpole. Jill Tanner provides an enjoyable reading of "Hilda's Story" - told from the point-of-view of She Who Must Be Obeyed, though I thought she sounded a bit young.

    Yankee Readers?!?
Why ruin good southern stories with Yankee readers that don't know how to properly pronounce exclusively southern words like "ain't" and "som'bitch"? Further, Yankee disdain for Southerners always shows in their lookin'-down-the-nose inflections while trying to pretend to accept our ways. Insulting!
    Interesting!
I truly enjoyed listening to each story as I was actually transported into them and felt as though I was a by stander just observing! I plan to get more from this same collection of "The Year's Best..."

Enchanted by the Blood by Laurie London Sweetblood Series 2.5
Charlene Grant went out with her friend but was leaving alone. Kari took off with some guy she thought could help her climb the work ladder. On the way to her car two guys start coming after Charlene. She runs into a hard chest and a deep voice tells her to go to her car and wait. For some reason she feels safe with the stranger and does as he says.
Trace Westfalen felt an urgency to go to a part of town he usually did not frequent. Sure enough he found Charlene in trouble. A couple of Dark bloods were after her. He had her wait and she did. Bad mistake. A year ago Charlene had been hired to decorate the mansion for Christmas. During that time Trace spent a lot of time with her. Being a vampire it was never wise to get too close to a human but he did. Until the fateful night she walked into a room where Sebastian was feeding. The horror on her face left Trace with no choice but to wipe her memories. A year later and he stills feels for her what he never felt before.
Charlene could not believe she let Trace drive her home and then invited him in. She was not that kind of person and yet something about him was so familiar and safe. He left her the next morning and she did not hear from him for a week. He had hired her to decorate for their Christmas Party.
Trace could not stay away and he finally decided that being elected to Council or anything else in his life would not be worthwhile without Char. And once he told her the truth of who he was and that they knew each other, she still looked at him the same.
Monsters Don't Do Christmas by Michele Hauf
Daniel is a vampire, not by birth and not by choice. He was a hot shot on wall street until the night of his attack. Now he just considers himself a monster and just exists. Although he does see where his life slowed down and he can look back and see he was not all he thought he was.
Olivia considers herself a type of monster when she's all dressed up and made up to sing on stage. When she comes home to the quiet place she stays a few weeks out of the year she breaks up a fight and invites the man who was being beat up by two others into her home. So what that he ends up being a vampire. It ends up being more than a one night stand for Daniel and Olivia. Even though she is in the spotlight and he has to stay away from it.

    Title: Piranha to Scurfy
    Subtitle: And Other Stories
    Author: Ruth Rendell
    Narrator: Jenny Sterlin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-18-11
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
The best-selling author of Harm Done and A Sight for Sore Eyes, Ruth Rendell has written dozens of gripping works under her own name and as Barbara Vine. She has received three Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America and four Dagger Awards from Englands Crime Writers Association.
How frightening can a book be? Ambrose Ribbon, self-appointed editor and grammar police, is about to find out. He has spent years pointing out mistakes to writers and their publishers. So when he picks up the latest supernatural thriller from a best-selling author, its typos and lapses of logic are no surprise. Its story, however, slyly begins to poison Ribbons life. "Piranha to Scurfy" is just the first story in this collection of nine gems from the grand mistress of suspense. Jenny Sterlins finely crafted narration highlights the richness of each character and the subtle psychological shifts.
    Members Reviews:
    An uneven collection
I love Ruth Rendell, but found this collection to be a little disappointing.
Seven stories appear between two novellas: Piranha to Scurfy, Fair Exchange, The Wink, Catamount, Walter's Leg, The Professional, The Beach Butler, The Astronomical Scarf, and High Mysterious Union.
The long title piece introduces us to one of the most unlikable characters I've encountered in a short story: Ambrose Ribbon. Self-important, pompous, and often cruel, Ribbon devotes his time to reading. Not reading for pleasure or education, but reading so he can write letters to the various authors involved, pointing out their mistakes. At heart, however, he is a moral coward, and he will discover to his horror that all his "work" comes at a cost. Though it is well-night impossible to identify with Ribbon, "Piranha to Scurfy" is a well-turned tale.
The next seven stories are quite uneven, with some of them being rather boring. Partly this is because the characters themselves are not particularly interesting. Throughout this book, I felt it was difficult to engage with these fictional people, which is not my usual experience of Rendell.
Depending on who reads it, the novella "High Mysterious Union" may be seen as a condemnation of modern values, an eerie supernatural story, or something else entirely. Several of us had a lively discussion about it and there was little agreement! To me it was intriguing, and left me wondering about a great many things that happened in it.
Jenny Sterlin has a dark and brooding tone here that expresses the mood of Rendell's characters. She portrays a detachment and understatement so well-suited to the writing style of this particular book.
This is the first collection of short stories published since "Blood Lines." I hope audible reissues the latter! The stories are far superior to those in "Piranha to Scurfy," especially its memorable novella, "The Strawberry Tree."

    Good stories.
Good stories. Gives a good idea of what life is like in the US Virgin Islands.
Not your usual Caribbean - based stories.
Puzzling at times, yet Tiphanie Yanique's efforts to say something true and meaningful, and her generous view of her characters and their struggles won me over.
A relief to read this kind of thoughtful exploration of life in the Caribbean islands, especially St. Thomas.
    Fantastic short stories
The ends are always so surprising. Oftentimes, they leave you with mixed emotions. Definitely a great read. Finished it in 2 days.
Refreshingly different author with a unique way of putting words on paper.
I really like this writer's style. I sometimes enjoy reading short stories. This book was suggested via an interview with the writer on NPR some months ago.
When I finally got around to getting it I was surprised and delighted by the freshness of the author's point of view. The stories have the usual points of interest but are tinged a the unique taste of humor. Spicy but not too hot. Great!
    Enjoyable
A great book with some really unexpected stories. I really enjoyed reading this and enjoyed how well it was written. Every story comes to life with characters and setting as you read.
