Language: English

Release date: 03-22-11

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 20 votes

Publisher's Summary:

Culling the vastness of experience-from its bizarre fringes and breathtaking pinnacles to the mediocre and desperately below average--like an expert curator, Jim Shepard populates this collection with characters at once wildly diverse and wholly fascinating. A "black world" operative can't tell his wife a word about his daily activities, but doesn't resist sharing her confidences. A young Alpine researcher is smitten by the girlfriend of his dead brother, killed in an avalanche he believes he caused. An unlucky farm boy becomes the manservant of a French nobleman who's as proud of having served with Joan of Arc as he's aroused by slaughtering children. A free spirit tracks an ancient Shia sect, becoming the first Western woman to travel the Arabian Deserts. From the inventor of the Godzilla epics to a miserable G.I. in New Guinea, each is complicit in his or her downfall and comes to learn that, in love, knowing better is never enough.

A contemporary short story master

As with Jim Shepard's other collections, these stories are diverse and always engaging. He conjures worlds and voices in stories that are at times heartbreaking and hilarious, and makes completely unfamiliar terrain seem believable and normal. The stories are obviously meticulously researched and rich with authentic detail - there are stories ranging from covert black ops scientific research, to medieval France. Highly recommended.

1 out of 3 great

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Isabelle gordon reads tinsel wonderfully. The other two readers are so bad, could not get through the story!

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

choose better readers, please. Gabra Zackman/ Isabelle Gordon is just wonderful. I am so surprised when some of these readers actually get paid. I know they keep changing their reader names, but it does not change the fact the are just awful.

Did Winter Wishes inspire you to do anything?

Yes, write about poor readers that can ruin a fairly decent story.

about time

I have been waiting for a Moira Rogers book in audio and am very pleased to listen to it. Loved all the stories. Vivian Arend my second favorite story. Yes pleased to recommend this book.

Title: Lincoln and the Golden Circle

Subtitle: The Pinkerton Files, Volume 1

Author: David Luchuk

Narrator: Michael Hogan

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 25 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-14-11

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Ltd

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 13 votes

Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies

Publisher's Summary:

The Pinkerton Files is based on the new audio series starring Battlestar Galactica's Michael Hogan. It sets the real cases of Americas first private detective in a world of radical inventions driving a bitterly divided nation toward civil war.

Agency founder Allan Pinkerton senses a conspiracy mounting against him, his sons and his operatives. Every step they take toward solving three seemingly disconnected cases draws them further into a conflict that will be their downfall. If Allan allows them to become embroiled in the war, they will never find their way out.

Lincoln and the Golden Circle launches as a simple assignment to protect a rail line from sabotage but explodes when one of Allans agents is murdered, his son is arrested and his protege is wickedly assaulted. With police descending on his headquarters, Allan must choose whether to commit his detectives to a death defying sprint in a final attempt to save the Presidents life.

Worth checking out.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would and I will.

Was Lincoln and the Golden Circle worth the listening time?

A short story of the Pinkerton detectives certainly worth a listen.

Interesting Alt-History that could have been much

Entire book is treated as personal memoirs that are disjointed and tell the story from multiple angles. Set in an alternate historical timeline where trains are on elevated rails and Gypsies have bolted on shanties to the side of long haul trains. If a free Appendix was included that listed the Main history that goes along with the secret anexes that this book compiles then it would make more sense.

Short & Sweet - 5 Brilliant Stories!

Each story is a deserved winner, and 5 very varied scenarios reflecting with themes such as lost love, amnesia, aloneness, madness, justice, betrayal and solidarity (pity there are only 5 stories in all)!

Overall, the collection is less than 2 hrs listening time, and at the end I was left wanting more. My only slight complaint is that on my iPhone, each story is just an anonymous chapter.

I don't know who won, but for me 'My Daughter, the Racist' is the most thought provoking and contemporary account I have heard or read in a long time. It made me weep for the human condition.

Great collection and well narrated

Loced these stories - they are all very different but equally well narrated and thought provoking

Great contemporary writing

Accessible stories i could relate to, beautifully written. So refreshing to have these collections available. A change from the rather staid writers in some of the 20 century collections. I will be listening to more from the BBC Short Story titles.

Editorial Reviews:

A delightfully pulpy installment in Jack Bates' Harry Landers, PI series, A Model for Murder brings the charismatic detective to life in a rich performance from voice actor Erik Parker. In a nuanced baritone, Parker lays out Landers' latest case, in which a voluptuous 23-year-old supermodel on the verge of marriage, Samantha Hellings, begins receiving anonymous threats. Full of classic noir atmosphere, quirky humor, and daring intrigue, A Model For Murder is a worthy addition to the canon of detective literature.

These stories evoke those black-and-white days when Alfred Hitchcock shuffled onto our walnut-encased televisions to present half an hour of spine-tingling tension... how refreshing it is to find the perfect length of story that should satisfy all enthusiasts of this genre. (The Spectator

Members Reviews:

Really enjoyed ALL the stories

I was expecting to like one or two of the short stories but no they were all good. Each story was very individual, therefore they did not bleed into each other and become one. This would make me read other books by the authors that I did not know before.

Title: Charles Dickens

Subtitle: The Short Stories

Author: Charles Dickens

Narrator: Nigel Lambert, Richard Mitchley

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 28 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-12-10

Publisher: The Copyright Group

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 14 votes

Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies

Publisher's Summary:

CHARLES DICKENS enjoyed entertaining his friends with readings of ghost stories, especially at Christmas time. In his classic tale The Signalman, the then high technology world of steam railway comes to contact with what looks like a good old fashioned haunting. A night at a desolate country inn dramatically changes Tom Smart's fortunes in The Bagman's Story. Together with Christmas Ghosts and Mr Testators Visitation, these tales are fine examples of Dickenss spine-chilling talents.

These stories are read for you by RADA trained Nigel Lambert, a member of the National Theatre who has made numerous appearances for the BBC in fields as varied as classic drama and childrens television and Richard Mitchley who has worked in theatres throughout Britain as well as the BBC and ITV and his own Mayfly Theatre company.
