Publisher's Summary:
American Sailor Kurt Reid is a hothead and a hard case - a man who hits first and asks questions later. As scrappy and rough around the edges as Jimmy Cagney, its no wonder that when the ships captain turns up dead, its Reid who takes the rap.
Falsely accused and under the gun, Reid jumps ship and vanishes into Shanghai - only to get caught in a web of intrigue, betrayal, and murder. In a world where nothing is what it seems and everything is for sale, hes soon out of his depth, drawn into a spy game in which the winner takes all... and the loser takes a knife to the back.
Will Reid live up to his reputation as the Spy Killer? Hell have to learn the rules fast, because with players like sexy Russian agent Varinka Savischna in the hunt, the game is about to turn as seductive as it is sinister.
As a young man, Hubbard paid several visits to pre-Communist China, where one of his closest friends headed up British intelligence. In a land where communists, nationalists, war lords, and foreign adventurers schemed for control, Hubbard gained a unique insight into the intelligence operations and spy-craft in the region - a knowledge that informs stories like Spy Killer.
Members Reviews:
Entertaining. Shallow, but entertaining.
This is one of those entertaining pulps that is short on logic/coherence, but high on thrills and action. Hubbard was an able entertainer, and even if his writing can be uneven and ragged, tales like this one are still passable.
Pulp is right
Spy Killer is an entertaining story as long as you don't expect too much. A few points stretched believability beyond the breaking point. If you can overlook that, then you will probably enjoy it.
Spy vs. Spy
Spy Killer (Stories from the Golden Age)
Spy Killer by L. Ron Hubbard
This is one of the longest books (Kindles, CDs, paperbooks) in the Golden Age series. It is unique in that it has two women who are tough enough to attack the factories belonging to Lin Wang, who is Chinese with a distinct leaning toward the Japanese side of the war. An American named Kirk tries to keep the women--a White Russian, which means a Russian who is not Communist--safe, while the women, Varinka and Anne, try to keep him safe.
This would make an extremely good adventure movie, because it is full of guns, martial arts, and other means of "getting" people, and even the women are extremely familiar with martial arts and firearms.
I cannot write a lengthy review of this book because there are too many places where any explanation of what is going on would create a spoiler. The end of the book is a major spoiler and cannot possibly be discussed until it is reached. So all I can say at this point is that this is an outstanding adventure/suspense story written toward the end of the pulp era. As in the rest of his pulps, Hubbard avoids using words we do not want our children to use.
When I completed my Ph.D. I vowed that I would never again finish reading a book I didn't like. So I am not saying that all books are good; I am just saying that if I don't like the book I will rarely finish reading it.
I very much liked this book. I think you would like it too, particularly if you are male and young, say 14 to 18. That does not mean that girls and older people wouldn't like it.
