    Author: Mikel Harry, Richard Schroeder
    Narrator: James Lurie
    Format: Abridged
    Length: 5 hrs

    Publisher's Summary:
When GE reduced its costs from 20 percent to less than 10 percent, it saved a billion dollars in just two years - money that goes directly to the bottom line. This is the reason Wall Street and corporations as diverse as Sony, Ford, Nokia, Texas Instruments, Canon, Hitachi, Lockheed Martin, American Express, Toshiba, DuPont, and Polaroid have embarked on corporate-wide Six Sigma programs. Six Sigma should be of paramount importance to every forward-thinking executive and manager determined to make their company world-class in their industry.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Six Sigma] is the most important initiative GE has ever undertaken...it is part of the genetic code of our future leadership." (Jack Welch, CEO, GE)

    Not happy
When I read the review "Simply put, this book's content is strictly marketing the importance of six sigma without ever getting to the content. It read like the advertising for the next Ronco device and never gave any useful information for driving improvement or change." I should have listened...
    OK Reading for an Introduction
I will agree with the other 2 reviewers there doesn't seem to be a lot of content behind the book but this book is the only one available via audio book, Jack Welch talks a good six sigma game too but in this book you would expect more. Maybe the subject matter is too complicated to properly document in a 5 hour businees book? I am currently listening to it for a second time and find it more interesting than the first
    Just call it One Sigma
Six Sigma is the latest management theory to hit the big time. Starting at Motorola, it has moved throughout the manufacturing world, making converts and strongly influencing business practices. It is now moving into the service world, most notably in health care. And Heaven knows we need improvement in health care. It's an important theory, but more than that, it's a coherent set of practices for process improvement. Unfortunately, you won't learn much from this book, which is written in the classic "let's all get on the bandwagon" style often found in bad management books. It's more appropriate to advertising copy than to a serious examination of the theory and practice of Six Sigma. In short, the book doesn't come close to doing justice to Six Sigma. And in the audio format, it's impossible to skip over the extensive amount of fluff to get to the good stuff. If you have to get it, buy the book. At least, you can skim the book. Don't waste your money on the audiotape, unless you need something to get to sleep at night.
    Introduction looking for content
Simply put, this book's content is strictly marketing the importance of six sigma without ever getting to the content. It read like the advertising for the next Ronco device and never gave any useful information for driving improvement or change.
    Not for beginners.
Professional speaker did a great job. The content is not for anyone in the beginning phase of exploring Six Sigma; you will need a manufacturing and mathematical background to be able to follow along.

What is the most important responsibility of managers today? The answer is mobilization, says Jennifer Kenny, President of Emergent Management Consulting. Mobilizing your organization to meet a common goal requires gaining your employees' commitment to a shared future. Skills previously considered essential to success, such as problem solving, goal setting, and operations management, are by themselves no longer sufficient, says Kenny, if the organization lacks commitment, trust, and coordination. She outlines a new model where these principles are the cornerstone of all business processes and can be applied to leading an organization toward a unified and successful future.

This Audio Tape Is an Outstanding How-To Guide for Growth!
It has been almost two years since I read this book. On a recent trip to New York, I realized that I had the audio cassettes, but had never listened to them. So I did. What a wonderful surprise this was.
There are four cassettes and each is read by the authors who alternate. Both have good speaking voices, and use a good pace. It is easy to listen to them and follow their voices.
Unlike many cassette series which are overly edited, this one is just the right length. You get a good overview of all of the points on the first side and a half, then go into each one in more detail in the remaining three tapes.
As much as I liked the book, I liked the cassettes better. The authors are obviously used to speaking and teaching, and I felt like I was having them speak directly to me in a one-on-one session. I turned the tapes off whenever I had an assignment from them, and did the assignment. Clearly, this advanced my thinking much more than reading the book did. I was not as deeply into the concepts from reading as I was from listening, and did the assignments from a much more fundamental perspective.
Their first principle is to focus. The idea is to find what your most profitable customers find most valuable to them that you do best. This caused me to see our firm's relationship to our clients in a totally new perspective that is very valuable to me.
The second principle is to hard-wire listening to the customer. Although I remembered this advice from before, I was struck by realizing how few of the companies I know well take this advice. Customer listening is usually continuous, but is usually not well integrated into focusing the firm's attention. This is usually because most people don't see the information, or don't know how to interpret it.
The advice on how to create cooperation routinely throughout the organization is very good. I especially liked the variation on the internal customer concept espoused here whereby you are encouraged to both stay focused also on what the external customer needs.
Not only should you buy this resource, but you should then take a driving trip so you'll have a chance to listen to it. I suggest that you do as I did, and switch the tapes on and off so you can do the exercises in your mind (and later write down what you learned).
When you are done with this, I suggest that you also consider how this kind of approach could help your personal life.

  • Managers Not MBAs Audiobook by Henry Mintzberg

    Title: Managers Not MBAs
Subtitle: A Hard Look at the Soft Practice of Managing and Management Development
    Author: Henry Mintzberg
    Narrator: Joe Barrett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 29 votes
    Genres: Business, Management
    Publisher's Summary:
In this audiobook, Henry Mintzberg offers a sweeping critique of how managers are educated and how management, as a result, is practiced, and makes thoughtful - and controversial - recommendations for reforming both.
Management, Mintzberg writes, is a practice that blends a great deal of craft (experience) with a certain amount of art (insight) and some science (analysis). Because conventional MBA programs are designed almost exclusively for young people with little if any managerial experience, and hence little art and no craft to draw upon, the programs overemphasize science, in the form of analysis and technique. Graduates leave with a distorted impression that management consists entirely of applying formulas to situations, which has had a corrupting, dehumanizing effect not just on the practice of management, but also on our organizations and our social institutions.
Turning to how managers should be developed, Mintzberg describes in detail a set of innovative programs designed to address these shortcomings that he and a group of colleagues have put into practice: the International Masters in Practicing Management (IMPM). Finally, he outlines how business schools can transform themselves to become true schools of management.
Managers Not MBAs presents the kind of bold, iconoclastic thinking business people have come to expect from the man Fast Company magazine called "one of the most original minds in management".
    Members Reviews:
    Practical
Albeit promoting a McGill program, the argument that MBA programs are not on management is well presented.
The reference to the tables made it tricky to listen and drive.
This book is recommended to the professional (real) managers and not to business administrators.
    Insightful, paradigm-shifting alternative view
What did you love best about Managers Not MBAs?
Mintzberg has really done his research and provides many details to back up his arguments. He clearly indicts the MBA from a human-centered (as opposed to merely profit-centered) perspective on business.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Managers Not MBAs?
His case for why MBA's teach the wrong thing.
What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    A gruff tone.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Stop wasting your money. Don't be a sheep.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 46 mins

    Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Business, Management
    Publisher's Summary:
Good employees are hard to find, and they can be easy to lose. But there's a simple tool every manager can use to ensure that star performers and solid contributors alike will feel energized, engaged, and excited - and that they will give you fair warning if they're unhappy. It's called the stay interview, and this book is the manager's definitive guide, written by the women who created the concept.
The idea is simple: ask people how they like their jobs and what would keep them there. Worried that your talented people will want things you can't deliver, like more money or a big promotion? Kaye and Jordan-Evans have a simple four-step process for dealing with that. Feel just plain awkward about doing stay interviews? They explain how to create an atmosphere that will make the interview more comfortable and provide dozens of suggested questions and icebreakers, as well as tips for easing any performance anxiety you might feel. Think you don't have time? They offer all kinds of options for where, when, and how you can do stay interviews, from folding them into other business processes to doing them casually, like on a walk to get a cup of coffee.
Stay interviews prevent exit interviews. They cost nothing, and the price of not doing them - in lost talent and time - can be huge. Now that you have the most practical, authoritative, soup-to-nuts guide available, you have no excuse. Just ask!
    Members Reviews:
Highly practical and useful tips for holding onto and engaging valued employees
What I love about this book is that it is filled with practical and easily digestible advice. Not only do the authors make a compelling case for the value of conducting stay interviews, but they also provide the reader with ample "how-to" examples for putting them into action. To this end, they provide terrific conversation starters and questions that managers can use to engage their employees in these higher level discussions. They also address and prepare readers for numerous contingencies by identifying common challenges managers may face and provide answers to various "what if" scenarios. A stay interview is a technique that every manager should have in his or her toolbox.
Follow This Eminently Practical Playbook and Get Profound Talent Results
Bev and Sharon have done it again. They've made a high power practiceârarely done well or at allâintriguing, accessible and very doable. Follow this playbook and wherever you areâa non-player, an amateur or simply a good stay interviewerâyou will be GREAT in no time at all. The plays are clear, simple and easy to follow and chocked full of potential to not only retain, but unleash loads of energy and excitement in your talent. The tips are gems. Including some that apply outside the arena of stay interviews. My favorite is âfollow the blinking wordâ an all-purpose tool for active listening that is as profound as it is easy to pick up. Donât delay. Get this book for yourself and managers you know.
A Great Read that Unlocks the Magic
So simple, so obvious â and so consistently neglected. More than money and promotions, the one thing employees have been saying for years they want from their work is a sense of accomplishment and appreciation.

    Very Repetitive.
If you like other books by Richard Branson, you are likely to enjoy this, mainly because a lot of it is simply lifted from the others.
The voice is that of Branson, which is a nice touch but overall probably not as valuable as one would hope.
