Eliminate the redundancy that appeared throughout the entire book.

I would have deleted over half the book by removing all of the redundant words and scenes. Then I would have given the unfinished script back to Danielle Steel so that she could write new original material to complete the story..

I never write reviews but felt compelled to write this one in case I can spare someone the misery of reading/listening to this book. It was clear to me the author, Danielle Steel, did not have enough original material to write about so she filled the entire book by repeating herself over and over again.

Soneela takes her reading and characters seriously

As the only person in my book club who listens to audio, I am privileged to have the extra dimension of "READER" which I cannot share with them in my review. I can and often do, share a little of the audio to highlight a portion of the book I particularly enjoy. This reader, with the multitide of characters and accents, is able to portray these people and their accents authentically to help me distinguish who is who.

This book's character convergence does not feel contrived. The subject matter is dealt with three-dimensionally. Only the children are painted as angels on the planet...

Spellbinding

This book had me from the first paragraph. After a tsunami wipes out their home and family, two young girls are sucked into the underworld of human trafficking. The insights into how this world operates is gripping as are their stories. I chose this book because I am a fan of this narrator, and she did not disappoint, again speaking in Hindi, Russian, French, American, and Ukranian accents as she protrayed the different characters in this tale of darkness. I suspect the author may have been imagining himself as the hero of this tale, and I accept that. I think it was well-research, well-presented fiction, and I enjoyed it very much, one day walking an extra three miles while listening because I couldn't turn it off.

Perhaps better read than listened to

This is a thriller -- or at least a suspense novel. The premise is interesting, current and important -- sex trafficking in young girls in India (and other countries). It is the kind of book I would often pick up at the airport before a trip. I could then read it quickly, propelled by the story, which would allow me to ignore the illogicality and poor writing that abound in this novel. But the narrator of this novel reads it ponderously, solemnly, forcing the listener to attend to all the little things that don't actually make sense and preventing the story from developing any energy. A third of the way through I abandoned the effort. Perhaps if the narrator had been different, I might have stayed with it, but the combination of a questionable story and a very poor narrator made the enterprise very unsatisfying.

Ugh....Save your credit. Naive and juvenile.

TL;DR this is a great book if you're interested in/curious about human trafficking and/or India.

So a little background: I live in the DC area and I aspire to work for international nonprofits. The cause I have dedicated myself to up to this point has been human trafficking.

I am an avid Karen Slaughter fan. I love her Grant County and Will Trent books. These short stories however are VERY dark with absolutely no redeeming qualities. Suffered through to the last because I am a fan and was always hopeful that the NEXT story would be good. On the contrary, they only seemed to get worse. Please don't waste your time and mental capacity on these short stories.

Maybe. The stories were well crafted and it was intriguing to watch the characters take shape, but knowing how the stories conclude would probably ruin a second listen.

What other book might you compare The Unremarkable Heart and Other Stories to and why?

I can't recall reading anything that compares. Most of the characters are unsympathetic, selfish and unlikable, but the narrative is handled so deftly that you stick around anyway, if only to see if the unlikable characters get their comeuppance. By the end of some of the stories I was able to find shreds of sympathy for some of the most unsympathetic characters in the collection. Strange, really, but most of these stories were written (and narrated) very well. It's full of people being horrible to one another, but it's not (in most cases) for simple shock value -- it's organic and we get to see what shaped these vindictive characters.

Which character as performed by Shannon Cochran was your favorite?

None of the characters were really likable, so it's difficult to select a favorite. The narrator did a really great job with all the characters, though perhaps best with Jude from The Truth About Pretty Girls, or June from Unremarkable Heart.

The Audible Daily Deal occasionally pays off. Eighty percent of what I've picked up turns out to be crap.

Beautiful, Heart-wrenching, Shocking.

In my opinion, this book is more of an art project than a novel. I remember sitting on a bench in a large gallery in the Louvre. The large, framed painting hung on the wall in front of me showed a scene of ANOTHER large gallery in ANOTHER museum, with some OTHER people sitting on a bench, looking at the painting in front of THEM...

This book is like that. Its a story of a married couple that are performance artists. They spend their lives trying to manipulate people into being upset and uncomfortable. The fact that their parents do this makes our main characters (the couples children) upset, and uncomfortable. As a result of this, and in experiencing how this repeatedly hurts these vulnerable, damaged kids, it is now the you, the reader, who will become upset, and uncomfortable.

What does home and family really mean? If qualities such as loyalty, constancy, and a sense of safety are absent, does it cease to truly BE home and family? At what point do you have the right to walk away? And if you believe you have earned that right... is it even possible to do so?

These questions rise to the surface as Annie and Buster, now grown from damaged kids to damaged adults find themselves with nowhere to turn but the very childhood home that damaged them in the first place. When something happens that could be a tragedy, the siblings have to ask themselves; is the tragedy actually a reality? Or is it just another presentation of their parents art? If their parents ARE behind the events, isnt that just as tragic? Their parents have manipulated the siblings into being unwitting, living props so many times, they no longer know the difference between whats real, and whats pretend.

Love this one

I really enjoyed this book there was a lot happening slightly unbelievable the main character brings up his daughter alone and is too frightened to tell her he wants a life of his own when she is an adult. However I did enjoy it very much.

Nothing Nothing Nothing

I can now say that I have listened to an entire Danielle Steel book wherein absolutely NOTHING HAPPENS. I kept waiting for something resembling a climax to a book, listening ... listening ... listening. Save your money/credit.

Disappointment...

I like Danielle Steele and have read many of her books. This one,however, is so dull and so predictable that I didn't even finish it. It's like a long overview of a story that could have been so much more. And the narrator speaks like he is reading a story to a room full of 5 year olds. It was a miss on all counts so I'll wait for her next work to come out and hope for better.

Original story idea, not enough chemistry

I really liked the premise for this book. The mystery of the teeth and why Karous is running the mysterious errands is enough to keep you hooked but ultimately I didn't....

... buy into the chemistry between Karou and Akiva. There just wasn't enough to it and I found that I didn't care enough about their relationship. I would also have loved to hear more about Karou's other family but there just wasn't enough details on this either.

I really liked Karou as a character, she was interesting and brave but otherwise I don't know if I will bother with the next book. This book just didn't draw me in enough.

One of my favorite series

I first read this book just before it was released and was immediately captivated by it. having read the whole series now it was really interesting to listen to the audio book version of it. The lyrical magic of the writing fits beautifully in an audio book. I love it.

Totally lived up to the hype! The story and writing was beautiful and absolutely fantastic, the narrator was surprisingly great (I love the accents especially!) and the ending was completely heartbreaking...

When I first started reading this story I got really bored and ended up putting it down, but it had come highly recommended by a trusted source so I turned back to it several months later and pushed on through. I'm so glad I did.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters in this story are really captivating and whilst they seem to start out ambling aimlessly through the pages without very much excitement at all, that soon changes and you find yourself willing them forward.

What about Khristine Hvams performance did you like?

I've given the performance four stars; it could have been five since Khristine Hvam performs this audiobook brilliantly capturing all of the individual characters with one voice.

So good that I'm writing my first Audible review!

I've enjoyed Morrison's *Beloved* and *The Bluest Eye* for years, but hadn't heard of *Tar Baby* until recently. Now that I've listened to *Tar Baby*, though, it's quickly replaced *The Bluest Eye* as my favorite Morrison text!

*Tar Baby* is a rich, complex love story that explores many questions, particularly those of race solidarity, heritage, and trauma. Valerian Street, a rich white retiree, lives on a tiny island in the Caribbean with his troubled younger wife, Margaret, as well as two faithful old servants, Sydney and Ondineboth black. Sydney and Ondine have long acted as guardians for their orphaned mixed-race niece, Jadine Childs, now 25 years old, a college graduate, and a successful international fashion model.

The household is thrown into chaos when Margaret discovers a strange black man hiding in her closet. This man, known as Son, has been squatting in the house for several days, yet Valerian inexplicably invites him to stay at the house as an honored guest. Jadine, though initially repulsed by the filthy, scruffy intruder, soon begins a clandestine sexual relationship with him. The ensuing romance drives most of the remainder of the novel and forms the backdrop for Morrison's provocative questions regarding race, gender, love, and power.

Desiree Coleman's narration of this book is excellent. I am moderately hearing-impaired, yet had very little trouble understanding her. The ways in which she dramatizes various characters' voices are consistent and appropriate--neither boringly bland nor over-the-top. Her narration was smooth and distraction-free, allowing me to get lost in Morrison's story instead of Coleman's reading.

In short, highly recommended!

Loved

Not sure why I hadn't read this sooner. A masterpiece! I see why it won the Nobel Prize. The language is so richly woven together.

could not finish it..

I am a true fan of Dorothea Benton Frank - LOVED all her past books and was looking forward to this new release. SUCH a disappointment, the only audio book I've ever purchased and could not finish listening to. Skip it.

Disappointing.

If you loved the early DBF books, you will probably be suckered in to this one just as I was...but I truly regret buying this book. The story was not entertaining at all to me.

Can't finish listening

Narrator good but plot and writing style really annoying. Do not waste a credit. Too much "chick lit" and too little story. Everything too pat.

Cover Art Better Than the Story

Who wouldn't want to sit in those chairs beside the beach? Chosen as my summer folly, this book turned out to be a lurching, disjointed, and almost painful listen. Narrator Robin Miles does a nice job, but despite her efforts I had to force myself to return to this recording, often feeling I had been caught in an undertow. I would have enjoyed this book if it had not included painful interruptions of that terrible play. The best thing about the book was it's cover. The picture, fonts and layout captivated my attention. Too bad I couldn't have just bought a poster.

Great story - irritating narration

I enjoyed the storyline. Yes, it was predictable but entertaining. Don't we read to be entertained? I found the narration to be irritating. Too me the characters sounded monotone, some even sounded like they were irritated all the time. The male characters came across as dorks. For me, the voice for John Risley did not match my visualization of him. I will listen to more Dorothea Benton Franks but I won't be listening to anymore Robin Miles.
