    Title: The Sunset Limited
Subtitle: A Novel in Dramatic Form
    Author: Cormac McCarthy
Narrator: Austin Pendleton, Ezra Knight, Tom Stechschulte
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-26-10
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 238 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A startling encounter on a New York subway platform leads two strangers to a run-down tenement where a life or death decision must be made.
In that small apartment, Black and White, as the two men are known, begin a conversation that leads each back through his own history, mining the origins of two fundamentally opposing world views. White is a professor whose seemingly enviable existence of relative ease has left him nonetheless in despair. Black, an ex-con and ex-addict, is the more hopeful of the men, though he is just as desperate to convince White of the power of faith as White is desperate to deny it. Their aim is no less than this: to discover the meaning of life.
Deft, spare, and full of artful tension, The Sunset Limited is a beautifully crafted, consistently thought-provoking, and deceptively intimate work by one of the most insightful writers of our time.
    Critic Reviews:
A brilliantly articulated piece, penned by a wildly acclaimed fiction writer. Nothing short of dazzling. So astonishingly effecting, so powerful, so stimulating! (Chicago Tribune)
    Members Reviews:
    Wow
I held off from buying this because of the short length of the audiobook. After getting through all of Cormac McCarthy's other audiobooks, this was the only one I haven't read. I'm glad I did. After purchasing, I realized that it was a play and the performances by the voice actors were excellent. It's one of those stories that stick with you long after you listen to it. I didn't realize that HBO released a movie for this until after I listened to it. The movie is superb as well (Tommy Lee Jones, Samuel L. Jackson).
    Great readers and thoughtful words
I hate buying short books but this one might have me reconsidering the issue. Alarmingly well written and perfectly read, this terse book had me smiling the whole time. It also felt much more mature than any college dorm room version of religion vs atheism because nothing in this book is naive or stereotyped. The setup is the only act that demanded we suspend any disbelief -- it's plausible but also a bit serendipitous or coincidental. Read it -- you can't go wrong.
    Listened to it twice!
Where does The Sunset Limited rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is the first dramatic piece I've listened to, but it was excellent. You feel like you're in the room watching and listening to these two diverse men.
Who was your favorite character and why?
There are only two, but I feel more warmly towards the one they call Black, but I don't see how you couldn't. His role is to convince/save/outlast the other, and he has quite a few stories to tell. White/Professor, until close to the end, doesn't want to share or is unable to share his stories.
Have you listened to any of the narratorss other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't listened to others by any of these men, but it is not really narrated. More of a play.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Despite the fact that Black moves the story along, White/Professor is finally pushed to the wall at the end and out of frustration or need or urgency, something--he doesn't so much as explain but spews out his feelings of absolute disdain for his life. The listener, at least this one, understands him. Sad for him, but understands him.

    Oh Dear
Would you try another book from Sherryl Woods and/or Mary Robinette Kowal?
Yes I will read more but cannot bear to listen to Narrator
How did the narrator detract from the book?
    Her voice oh everythig
    Tired of the forgiveness
Would you try another book from Sherryl Woods and/or Mary Robinette Kowal?
I have this series in ebook format but wanted to be able to listen to the series while doing other things. I did not like this narrator nor the one in the previous book. It certainly detracts from the listening experience.
Would you be willing to try another book from Sherryl Woods? Why or why not?
I have many books by Sherryl Woods and just purchased another one. No problem with her work.
What didnt you like about Mary Robinette Kowals performance?
Lack of differences in voices. Not very good character voices.
Do you think Home in Carolina needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Since I have the whole series, I know there are other books that tie in to this.
    Any additional comments?
I really get sick of the whole theme of men cheating on "the love of their lives". I'm sorry, but if you really do love someone , you can't justify having so little respect for that person that it's alright to do that. Just to be completely fair, I also don't think too much of the female cheating on the male.
    Narrator
What didnt you like about Mary Robinette Kowals performance?
Everything! I strongly recommend to consider having these books re-read by another narrator. Mary Robinette Kowal is probably better in narrating childrens' books with a lot of witches, elves, trolls and bears because that is how she makes the characters in this story sound. I like the series, I would love to hear more but will wait for you to replace the narrator.
    Cab't Get the Narrator Right
What did you love best about Home in Carolina?
The story is great with fun, a little sex, and many real problems.
What about Mary Robinette Kowals performance did you like?
The difference in the voices is terrible! Get a grip, men do not sound like that, not do we talk like that in the south! So far, I AM STILL LISTENING BECAUSE OF THE STORY, DEFINITELY NOT THE NARRATORS.
    Worst narrator
What did you like best about this story?
The storyline; interaction and continuing development of characters in Serenity. Addresses a believable variety of personal and familial issues.
How could the performance have been better?
Different narrator - go back to narrator for first couple of books in this series.
    Any additional comments?
This narrator's voices for various characters is nauseating at best.

    Publisher's Summary:
Set in Burma during the British invasion of 1885, this masterly novel by Amitav Ghosh tells the story of Rajkumar, a poor boy lifted on the tides of political and social chaos, who goes on to create an empire in the Burmese teak forest. When soldiers force the royal family out of the Glass Palace and into exile, Rajkumar befriends Dolly, a young woman in the court of the Burmese Queen, whose love will shape his life. He cannot forget her, and years later, as a rich man, he goes in search of her.
The struggles that have made Burma, India, and Malaya the places they are today are illuminated in this wonderful novel by the writer Chitra Divakaruni calls a master storyteller.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ghosh renders the polite imprisonment of the Burmese royal family in India and the lush, dangerous atmosphere of teak camps in the Burmese forest with fine detaila perfect balance for the broad strokes of romance and serendipity that drive the story forward." (The New Yorker)
"Ghosh ranges from the condescension of the British colonialists to the repression of the current Myanmar (Burmese) regime in a style that suggests E. M. Forster as well as James Michener. Highly recommended." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Wonderful Family Saga Set in Burma and Malaysia
This is a big story written by one of my favorite authors, Amitav Ghosh. He gives the full sweep of history in this region in the 20th century, starting with the end of Burmese royalty, the movement of Indians into the culture of Burma, the horrendous toll of suffering and displacement during WW II, ending with the restrictive political climate of the new "Myanmar". It is told through the intertwined families of the book, a large and intertwined lot. I loved the attention to the characters, and the coming together of many different family connections that span the generations. The characters are quite unique, and the woman are very independent. Ghosh is a great story teller and I would recommend his other books as well. The book's length and detail draw you in, the narrator is very good and brings all the characters alive. It is not a book for someone looking for a fast moving plot, but there is a lot of drama throughout the novel and a fascinating book for a good, long listening experience.
    Marvelous listening experience
I read the book a few years back and loved it. It is beautifully written, very absorbing, and heartbreaking. This is a great way to re-read the book, or to read it for the first time. Simon Vance is one of the best narrators I've heard, and he does a marvelous job here. A fabulous listen!
A Delicious Escape into the Past
Wow, I cannot remember why I selected this, as I had not read Ghosh before. It has been too enthralling an audiobook to put down! It has remarkable language portraits of India, Burma and Malaya, complete with smells, people, built environments, economics and politics. Sometimes it feels that too many historic events directly affect its players, but the reader is extraordinary and the novel's ability to evoke a place and time is superb.
    Excellent
FANTASTIC book! Couldn't stop listening. Now, can't stop thinking about it. I did not find the narrative too long. I would highly recommend this book.
I struggled to finish... enough said.
I can appreciate the story - young boy grows up during a rough time but ends up becoming very successful, both in his business and personal life.

    Publisher's Summary:
    A Children's Book About Beer?
Yes, believe it or not, but B Is for Beer is also a book for adults, and bear in mind that it's the work of maverick best-selling novelist Tom Robbins, internationally known for his ability to both seriously illuminate and comically entertain.
Once upon a time (right about now) there was a planet (how about this one?) whose inhabitants consumed 36 billion gallons of beer each year (it's a fact, you can Google it). Among those affected, each in his or her own way, by all the bubbles, burps, and foam, was a smart, wide-eyed, adventurous kindergartner named Gracie; her distracted mommy; her insensitive dad; her non-conformist uncle; and a magical, butt-kicking intruder from a world within our world.
Populated by the aforementioned character ;and as charming as it may be subversive, B Is for Beer involves readers, young and old, in a surprising, far-reaching investigation into the limits of reality, the transformative powers of children, and, of course, the ultimate meaning of a tall, cold brewski.
    Members Reviews:
Not The Tom Robbins I Know
Very disappointing story. Figured one couldn't go wrong with two of my favorite things: Tom Robbins and Beer; but it couldn't have been a greater let - down. The story is written through the eyes of a 6 yr. old girl. This is a problem, because Robbins doesn't allow himself to indulge in his usual INDULGENCES. The kind of reckless abandon in sexual metaphysics I'd grown to expect and appreciate in his writings. The narrator sounds just a little too much like a six year old, and the subject's continuous misinterpretations of all things adult, grow tiresome. Having four daughters of my own might have made me a bit sensitive to this dynamic, but not too much. I've read all his other books, and have always come away with great belly laughs and some newly developed insight about this crazy thing we call life. This book provided neither.
    Deeply Disappointed
I couldn’t be more deeply disappointed. Anyone who would read this book to a six year old really ought ought to have his head (and motives) examined. I was hoping to find a book for adults cleverly written in the style of children's books, but sadly that is not the case. This isn't whimsical, it is lazy and misguided. It's a sad day when your loving, eccentric uncle with the fantastic stories ends up being just another burn out who yells rambling, mundanely inappropriate diatribes at kids in the park. At least Kurt Vonnegut was true to the end.

    "Who is This King Kong?"
Most of those "Top 100", "Best Of" lists (would love to meet anyone that has contributed to those compositions) will either have a novel by Greene, or list him as a top author; so what? Point is, Graham Greene was a wonderful writer and exceptional story teller, and if you've read any of his novels, you know that they truly are unforgettable -- the "Best". I'm a fan of Greene, especially his earlier works; the most recent novel I've read of his was The End of the Affair (published in '51) and that was a while ago. So I was anxious to listen to this later work of his.
C & E was a bit reminiscent of Great Expectations...the mysterious may-or-may-not-be-a-criminal benefactor and a young boy, the almost melancholy retelling of the story, and of course the very different styled, but wonderful and transportive writing. Greene always has an agenda - a parable, a moral indictment - and this short piece is no exception, but I was surprised at the completely unexpected little bit of humor...King Kong undercover international secret agent?! (What a hilarious mental picture this scene was in my head!..."Find this King Kong"...) It was so out of nowhere, and irreverantly placed, that it was like getting the giggles at a funeral. Greene and Branagh are the perfect pairing and make this one of the few that I will listen to again. Everyone should have at least 1 Graham Greene under their belt.
Imagine Conrad wrote Treasure Isle as a SPY novel
An under appreciated milky gem of a Greene novel for sure. One that resonated strongly with me. Greene is always a bit of a risk taker and this novel proves no different than many of his others. It is ambiguous, slightly absurd, and feels a tad like Conrad wrote Treasure Island as a Central American spy novel. As Greene's last novel, it incorporates aspects of both his more Catholic novels with his spy novels. To me C&E read as a fragmented meditation (read map) on love, kindness, truth, sacrifice and buried underneath it all - God.
    A Classic Story, Expertly Told
Fascinated by the storyline and tempted with the idea of spending 4 luxurious hours with Kenneth Branagh whispering in my ear, this selection has been sitting in my wish list for quite a while, waiting it's turn. Now completed, I can report it did not at all disappoint.
The Captain and the Enemy follows the life of a boy who is plucked from his boarding school as a child by a man he doesn't know, told he's been won in a backgammon game, re-named, and taken to live with a woman he's told to call mother. Throughout his life, the man that took him remains a powerful interest and influence to him, even though he sees him only occasionally. As he becomes a man, he sets out to locate the "Captain" with many goals and reasons in mind.
This is not a story of noble people. It's a story of unanswered questions and self serving motivations. If you read it hoping to become attached to the characters in a more traditional way, you may find yourself disappointed.

When Coco reluctantly agrees to house-sit in Jane's luxurious home, it turns out Jane's house comes complete with an unexpected houseguest: Leslie Baxter, a dashing but down-to-earth British actor who's fleeing a psycho ex-girlfriend. Their worlds couldn't be more different. The attraction couldn't be more immediate.
Suddenly Coco is seeing things differently: Leslie is not just a celebrity, he's a single dad to an adorable six-year-old girl. Her mother is a woman in love, with vulnerability and new insight. And Jane and Liz are about to take the bravest plunge of all - into parenthood.
As Coco contemplates a future with one of Hollywood's hottest stars, as her mother and sister settle into their lives, old wounds are healed and new families are formed - all bonded by love.
With wit and intelligence, Danielle Steel explores love in all its guises, taking us into the lives of three unusual but wonderfully real couples. One Day at a Time is at once moving, thought provoking, and utterly impossible to put down.
    Members Reviews:
    Difficult to finish
I am having difficulty finishing this book. I read some of Steel's books when I was younger, and really liked some of them (e.g. "Loving") but not others (e.g. "The Promise"). This one was boring and repetitive - you would have one character complaining about something over and over and over and over... I am not sure where the story is going. I am half-way through, and if it wasn't for the pleasantness and sweetness of the narrator I would not even attempt to finish it
    Great story
I liked all of the characters in the book and was glad to see that each of them had a happy ending.
    The Usual...sappy romance!
I haven't read a Danielle Steele novel in about 20 years, used to love them for a quick read. I picked this one for something in the car, and apparently my tastes have changed. The storyline is good, regular, sappy love story but didn't like all the "sidetrips" the author takes while telling the story. There seem to be many spots, she is narrating the story, then goes off to give more details on something about one of the characters that is too much information, so it makes the reading a little monotonous. If you like this genre, then you will probably like this one.
    Not bad...
Although the leading female character is a bit of a wimp, this book wasn't bad overall. The male lead character was endearing. Strong supporting characters added to the story. Good narration.
    One book at a Time
Danielle does not disappoint once again!
She continues to provide us with an enjoyable story.

SUE ME, I'VE GOT A JUVENILE STREAK
IT'S ALL COMEDY TO YOU TWO.
You take out chapters 8 thru 16 and this is a five star book. If you are listening and you are between these chapters and tired of all the sophomoric joking, skip to chapter 17, you will not miss any of the story.
I got this during the horror sale, and it is not a horror story. Joe R. Lansdale is known best for his western horrors, but this is not even close to those. It is a fun story, with lots of joking about Blacks, gays, gangsters and sex. As mentioned above I liked it except for the middle of the book, when I got tired of the all the silliness. Lansdale writes a lot of short stories and this is suitable to that, but in novel length it does not work as well. This is basically an adventure story and a remember the sixties story. Having been born in 1958, I was fairly young in the sixties, but I do remember the attitude of the young people of that time and this is spot on.
Narrator is excellent and adds to the enjoyment of the book.
Hap and Leonard, a series you shouldn't miss out
Where does Savage Season rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Savage Season played well as an audiobook. I was so impressed with the story I probably should have picked up the hard copy instead. But, all the time and energy put into making this audiobook was worth such a noteworthy production. Well done.
What about Phil Gigantes performance did you like?
Phil Gigante's voice was perfect for a Lansdale novel. I was especially pleased with his voice acting on female characters....it didn't sound cheesy.
    Any additional comments?
This is the second Lansdale novel I have decided to try on Audible. Overall, the experience was pleasant and entertaining. I'm usually pretty busy when playing a chapter from each audiobook but I always seem to know where I am in the story. Well done to those who put their hard work into this piece.
action packed awesome read, we need a movie!
I'm late to the party but I'm glad I've finally arrived. First time I heard lansdales awesomeness was in the rogues anthology by George rr Martin & now I'm officially hooked! book 2 here I come!
    no nice guys
These two guys know that lifes not easy, each has gotten his own share. Hence the ex-prisoner and a Vietnam vet look after themselves. When Haps ex-wife talks of easy money they get involved with some nasty people and before they realise it, they are in big trouble and great danger. It gets pretty bloody and the death toll is high.
I liked the two very different main characters as well as the supporting ones.

Can't get enough of Katie and Barbara!
I have been a faithful Katie Macalister fan from day 1.... Before I joined Audible-I READ every series she has out and in doing so, my mind had created it's own opinion of all the character's voices, traits, etc... So, when I purchased and began listening to the Audible versions- narrated by Barbara Rosenblat, I admit I was a bit worried it wouldn't do them justice.... Her voice is very distinct- BUT... Oh, how I was SOOOO wrong!!!! Barbara's unique vocal ranges and absolutely superb variations on the characters accents BLEW ME AWAY!!! There really is no other narrator who could pull it off so flawlessly! Bravo Katie, and BRAVO Barbara!!!!
    Still funny second time around.
It's hard to find a really entertaining & funny book. That it is unseriously sexy makes it all the better. Great character narration.
    Fire Me Up
If you could sum up Fire Me Up in three words, what would they be?
    Captivating, Funny, Sweet
What was one of the most memorable moments of Fire Me Up?
When Drake agreed to give up the sept to save Aisling and admitted he loved her.
Which character as performed by Barbara Rosenblat was your favorite?
If I had to pick one, I would choose Jim. You have to love the character, even if it sometimes can make you want to send it to "Abaddon." I also loved Drake because I am half Hungarian and love his voice and mannerisms.
If you could rename Fire Me Up, what would you call it?
The title suits the dragon theme. Leave it alone.
    Any additional comments?
Love the series. I hope there are more books that include Drake and Aisling.
Steamier than Book #1: Hot. Dragon. Sex.
In terms of hot dragon smut, let's quote When Harry Met Sally, "YES! YES! YES!" and "I'll have what she's having."
In terms of the end... NO! NO! NO! My heart plummetted at the end, deflated. I wanted to stomp my foot. I wanted Jim to go bite or drool on someone on behalf of Aisling, I wanted to curl up and cry a little. Although, props to Katie MacAlister on making me seriously consider spending an audible credit for the next book.
The mystery: kept me guessing on this one. My theories would change chapter-to-chapter, I have to admit it kept me on my toes. However... there are a few things that bugged me. I'm not sure if they are included as a 'red herring' to throw the reader off the scent of the real killer, or if it was just one of the plot threads whose end didn't get woven into the overall carpet. Although- one teensy wheensy little thing, that wasn't overly important and such, I did figure out. WAY in advance; but like I said, it was a 'small fries' bit of the book, not a major plot issue.
Narrator: I have a love/hate thing going on with this narrator.
