Always interesting, but bad American stereotypes

Jury mysteries are always witty and amusing, but this one seems to veer out of its comfort zone by adding ridiculous American stereotypes, bad dialogue, and bad American accents. Kind of seemed as though the author took a trip to New Mexico and just had to make Jury fit into it. He didn't.

Wandered

I kept getting distracted, as it wandered a bit. I didn't give it the 5 stars I give most of my books.

Comfort book

Each book of the series of Inspector Jury is a nice story, with likeable protagonists, behaving in a more or less extravagant way, with more or less logic. The mistery of this story is particularly baffling: three women that may or may not have known each other, have died in public places apparently of natural causes - but maybe not? The investigation brings Inspector Jury to New Mexico where, inevitably (as always in the books of the series), he meets a young girl who will play an important part in the solution of the case.

The book doesn't care about logic or credibility - it's rather about the atmosphere, the general impression of warmth and friendliness.

Another winner by Grau

I turned to this novel because I have read many of Shirley Ann Grau's novels and have enjoyed them tremendously. If you are interested in the South she is a must read. She was born in 1929, won a Pulitzer in 1965 for her The Keepers of the House. My favorite though is The Hard Blue Sky, followed closely by The Condor Passes, then this or The Keepers of the House . Heavens, they are all good. I prefer long over short novels and any novel is better than a short story, for me that is. That I enjoyed this short novel, The House on Coliseum Street, so much says something about her writing skills. It is the writing, not the book's topic that attracts. With her words she draws the South so you feel it with all your senses. She creates dialogs that are pitch-perfect. Her characters feel real, even if they are not typical. What they do and what they say are perfect for them.

As stated, it was not the topic that drew me to the book. Joan Mitchell is 20, unmarried and pregnant. You know right in the beginning that she will have an abortion. The story is about why. How did this come about? Who decided? And why did that person decide? The unborn child's father (Michael), what did he want.....and what did he say? Joan, her mother (Aurelie), her younger sister (Doris), Michael and one more, Joan's fiancé (Fred), all of these are carefully drawn so what happens is understood. Human beings don't act in a vacuum. There is also Joan's fourth stepfather - living in the same house on the top floors but completely separated from them. Aurelie has been married five times! Each time one child was born. What Grau has done is create a family, thrown in some boyfriends, and we watch them interact. This is a psychological novel with the characters, the time and the place all superbly drawn.

The author made me curious from the very first pages.

Let's call this a coming of age story, not about a young teenager, but rather the complicated process of standing on your own two feet. Knowing who you are. Having the strength to make your own decisions. This doesn't happen in the teens, it doesn't happen overnight and it isn't easy. How we get to this point will always be influenced by those around us.

The audiobook narration by Tamara Marston was excellent. The characters have such different personalities. This is wonderfully mirrored in their voices. The speed is perfect and the book is simple to follow. Wait till you hear Aurelie, Joan and her sister Doris! Two sisters.

Wonderful real life novel about mental illness

If you have a mentally ill family member, this novel will get to you..my mother in law was Bi-Polar. The effect of her disease impacted my husband his entire life-I totally understood Edens need to make her father better, to guide her father, to find the dad she wanted to have but didn't.

Spectacular writing, it made my heart hurt as I listened. Narration effective but Thaxton isn't a great narrator..still I couldn't stop listening.

A good war for someone who isn't familiar with the impact of mental illness on a family to discover its reality..

Well worth the credit.

The Agony and the Ecstasy

This is a well written novel about loving someone who suffers from a mental illness. I appreciated the realistic dilemmas faced by both the person living with the mental illness and the ones who loved him. How does one support this person without trying to control him? How does a person love one with a mental illness and not lose herself in the chaos? Does medication help or does it create as many problems as it is supposed to be solving? The book was beautifully narrated and executed. The story in no way sugarcoated the issues involved in living with mental illness but the characters were not without hope or sprinkles of joy. It was a satisfying read.(listen.)

If you could sum up Outside the Lines in three words, what would they be?

It's been a long time since a book brought me to tears. Make sure you have some tissues handy for this one. It's just a wonderful story of hope between a father and a daughter.

The very end broke my heart, made me cry, and smile too. Not many books can do that.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I just could not walk away from this book.

Enjoyed this

Good for a quick read. Some racy bits but not too bad. Really liked the story premise.

This book is so much better than I even imagined!

This book is about a family of 3 generations that have struggled with thier relationships until they are forced together. I'm it great at describing books but this is a book for anyone it's wonderful! There's love, loss, excitement, disappointment and everything in between. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read.

So well done

On the surface the story line could be seen as cliché - but it is not - the subtle and not so subtle twists and turns kept my attention and interest. Towards the end i listened to it sparingly - not quite ready to leave the story behind. The end is a lovely transition. I look forward to listening to more from this author and performer.

Nice story of family dynamics and forgiveness.

I thought the author approached the family struggles honestly; beautifully captured the parent and sibling dynamics. I liked that there was the promise of moving forward, but everything wasn't wrapped up neatly with a bow.

This book ends leaving me wanting more. Guess that is the goal of a multi-volume Saga. A family facing adversity - mostly with resilience.

Too Dark

Would you try another book from John Jakes and/or Marc Vietor?

I like a book that balances good and evil and ultimately the good prevail. Jake's book

has just too much loss, suffering, pain, without victorious outcomes and moments. I love Jakes, but this one has put me off the series for now..

with the " The Bastard" series, the narration was entertaining and the story line was historically informative.

These comments address The Kent Family Chronicles, the entire series of eight books, in audiobook format. All books are narrated by Marc Vietor. The entire series is approximately 125 hours of listening. Shortest book is 15.5 hours, longest over 26 hours. Vietor does a good job with narration, although the uniqueness of male voices is problematic. Most significant, youll have little difficulty determining who-says-what-to-who. Tempo and pacing fine, albeit the narration is a bit slow for my taste, bumped it to 1.25.

The entire series is a broad spectrum history of the United States from just pre-Revolutionary War through the 1890s and a chronicle of the Kent family through this time. Beginning with Phillip through the generations to the children of Gideon, a great-great-grandson. Members of the clan fight in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, are at the Alamo, the California Gold Rush, the Great Chicago Fire, the Johnstown Flood, and much more. The author skillfully intersperses vignettes of imagined and factual history. For example, two of the fictional characters of the series are sheltered for a few days at the home of the Lincolns in rural Kentucky - a baby is part of the family, young Abraham. One of the fictional characters is counseled by Benjamin Franklin. Fiction, Phillips childhood friend is Marquis deLafayette, non-fiction: deLafayettes role in United States and French military. The series is rife with this type of paradigm, but it is not difficult to determine what is true and what is fiction. All the instances that involve the Kents and John Jakes other fictional characters are products of his imagination. Much of the rest is a fun methodology of conveying historical events.

The stories are very listenable. I found no need to re-wind or fast-forward; no segment boring or irrelevant. Theses books are not love stories in the typical sense, albeit familial relationships, the crux of The Kent Family Chronicles, must include love stories, n'est-ce pas? In those areas where a sexual encounter is defined it is relevant to the plot and tastefully written. This does not occur often, but the clan does proliferate :-). A word to the prudish: there are a couple of rapes vividly described.

Very typical of the time written, the 1970s, writing is a bit verbose. Several of these books were adapted for television mini-series, popular at the time.

John Jakes is a terrific historical fiction author, recommended. Enjoy!

The first installation of the Pyte/Sentinel Series is lots of erotic fun. Stella Bloom's performance heats up this vampire-meets-virgin caper. Bloom's voice is smooth and spirited. With practiced subtly, she brings life to the characters' voices. Tall, Dark, and Lonely is not for diehard paranormal romance fans; still, listeners looking for a lot of passion and a little vampire may just pull an all-nighter to finish this audiobook.

5 ENTERTAINING, BLOOD-SUCKING STARS!

This was a fabulous read/listen because it was funny, sexy and offered a world of varied blood-suckers & other superhuman qualities (Pyte/Sentinels/vamps etc.), that was refreshing and different. I really liked how R.L. Matthewson's adhered to some aspects of the classic vampire canons, while adding elements to these supernatural creatures that was unique to this story.

24 year old Madison, as a heroine, was maternal, loving, self-sacrificing, and completely loyal to the well-being of her siblings (Jill and Joshua). Her mother Candy was a low-life, selfish woman who only stuck around when it was in her interest.

What made the experience of listening to The Ugly Duckling the most enjoyable?

I heard this years ago and enjoyed it very much. The whole idea of a less than beautiful woman being remade inside and out was interesting. I just recently purchased the audio so I could hear it again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Ugly Duckling?

The lengths the main character was willing to go to make things right. Stepping out of her comfort zone and doing the hard work to change.

I didn't have one. I enjoyed the entire book.

I don't normally support revenge in any form. But this was a different twist. The book had several unexpected turns that made it good from beginning to end.

In Losing Hope, Holder reveals the way in which the events of Skys youth affected him and his family, leading him to seek his own redemption in the act of saving her. But it is only in loving Sky that he can finally begin to heal himself.

This book was an example of pure perfection!

Losing Hope isDean Holder'sPOV of the storyHopeless. It was one of thebest rewritten books I've ever encountered.Learning about Holder, his family and friends added a wonderful dimension to this story. Losing Hope was utterly heartbreaking, compelling, and beautiful. It makes you fall even harder for Holder! This bookhelps us to know Holder better. He might have been enigmatic before in the first book Hopeless but here, you can see his heart, his true feelings. He's an amazing person. His life was tragic. It wasn't a normal, happy one. He found a way to deal with all the bad stuff life was offering him. He wrote letters that gave us more insight into the dynamics of their relationship andSky'srelationship with Holder. Hopeless written from Holder's POV was fantastic, and it allowed us a look at this beautiful story from such a different perspective.I highly recommend any books by Colleen Hoover!

Great complement to Hopeless, narration less so.

This story, Hopeless from Holder's point of view, was a particularly poignant and satisfying retelling of the original which is rare. I often find that in trying to retell a story an author misses the mark or parodies themselves unintentionally, this doesn't.

The big However here is this:

However, the choice of this particular narrator with this character, a boy who in my mind is more masculine, more settled/brooding, and more pensive than this narrator made him out to be significantly impeded the flow and the enjoyment of the story for me. I found myself trying to think of the narrator as a third person limited omniscient narrator rather than the first person narration intended by the author in order to make up for the mismatch.

In the end, if you loved hopeless, this is worth it, but still, the criticism needs to be said.

Sorry I just didn't care much for the story or the series.

There were like 1 or 2 excellent chapters. The rest was just like Hopeless retold...almost word for word but in Holder's voice.
