I finished this book only out of stubbornness.I just kept getting angry at Martha and her wrong choices.How submissive can one person be?. I could not believe how one woman could let a one night stand manipulate her whole life.I wanted a magical story but got a story of depression. I gave it three stars because it did provoke emotion only not the one I was looking for!

Vintage Crais

This is vintage Crais so if you have enjoyed his earlier books you will enjoy this. Pike is his silent, effective self and the plot is engaging. Excellent narration.

Best Joe Pike Novel Yet

The Joe Pike novels up till now have been kind of shallow and hokey but fun. This one actually has a involved exciting plot as well as the fun simplistic Dirty Harry type action. Recommend it.

Great Book

Great book, great narrator. I have read all of Crais and this is one of the best! Too short, I could have listened 3 or 4 more hours.

Pike grows on you

Crais' character Joe Pike grows on you. Tough guy loaner who has a heart and needs people more than he portrays or wishes to. A good listen. Fun, but don't expect super in depth writing. In the thriller/action dept. it has some good parts. Story development and character development are above average but fairly predicable and simple. I would recommend it but more for an easy, fun listen. Don't expect too much and you will enjoy this for what it is, a good story told well.

Pike gets a woman ... kinda.

I like Elvis Cole ... but Joe Pike is minimalist cool. I thought the pace of this story was better then the first two. The usual twist at the end was unexpected. The biggest downside to the book is we are losing the mystery of the character ... which was a highlight of the Cole Series.

An interesting, quick listen

A great, quick listen - not my usual fare (straightforward crime fiction) but the story is expertly structured and very light-handed in terms of the prose.

There is only as much in there as needs to be, but hints at a lot more.

Weird premiss

Not bad but I found the story a little weird & unlikely. The outcome/result/conclusion became quite predictable as I knew fairly early who was behind the ransom demand. I only really purchased this short story as it was narrated by Peter Forbes. Not sure I'd really bother with another Allan Guthrie story not for a while anyway.

Got rather bored actually and felt Ruth jumped to conclusions! I wouldn't waste my money on this.

A great listen!

This is a good forensic thriller that had me wanting to drive somewhere so I could listen to the next chapter.

Well written and researched as far as I could tell - definitely getting The Janus Stone!

Loved it!

Where does Crooked House (Dramatised) rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This is a dramatized version of the story, so if you're looking for the book -- it's not this one. but quickly add -- I enjoyed it immensely. I often listen to dramatized versions of Christie, Dickens, and other favorites when I am busy doing mindless work like laundry and cleaning. This one is a keeper, and what a surprised ending.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Crooked House (Dramatised)?

The end of course; shocking! The recording is punctuated with post WWII era music which I liked as well.

What does the narrator bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

These dramatized versions are second only to film.

Gripping from the very start...

Excellent, gripping, fast moving... There's no need to have read the first Jo Beckett book (Dirty Secrets Club) but it's an equally good book, and reading it will explain some of the background and relationships.

Very well read, especially the female characters; the narrator does a brill English accent, and the Asian policewoman is wonderfully characterised. I agree with the other reviewer that her men sound like heavy smokers!

I really didn't see the ending coming, yeah, yeah there's the expected tidying up of baddies, but there's another story line that kept me wondering right to the end - and the very end, with Gabe's announcement left me looking for the next which is out this summer.

The loss of memory is an unusual plot device; imagine your memory re-setting every 5 minutes back to some point in the recent past, which in our hero's case, is the news that his family have been kidnapped. That re-setting can never be cancelled, even if the last fixed memory proves false, he's totally stuck in that loop - and each time it's explained to him, he recognises the awfulness of it all, if only for a few minutes. That was the plot line ending that caught me out.

Really Enjoyable Yarn

This is the second of the Jo Beckett series, and like the first has an unusual plot line. This time about a guy who is exposed a chemical compound which corrupts his memory such that he cannot retain any short term memories. Very well written, a suspenseful story with plenty of twists and turns would make an excellent holiday book. Well read with good charactisations, my only slight gripe being that two of the main male characters sound as if they are on 40 a day!
