Great Story, Bad Narration

Freed did a masterful job once again putting together an incredible story that had me engaged from beginning to end... The problem? I couldn't wait for the end to arrive! Keith Szarabajka's narration, in my opinion, was a flat, dull, mind numbingly boring portrayal of Cordell Logan that I've come accustomed to hearing from Ray Porter.. It reminded me of Walter Cronkite reading a play... He made every single character sound like a 70 yr old stoner who could care less about whatever "intense" moment they were apart of.. It was as though he was reading the book to elementary kids with the way he used his inflections... It was very sad to hear actually... David Freed is a terrific author and the Cordell Logan books are among the best I've read/heard to date.. If it had been Ray Porter on narration this book would've easily gotten 5 stars across the board... Unfortunately that was not the case..

For light entertainment - Also reviews explained

This book is entertaining and light. I had just finished reading The Survivor by Gregg Hurwitz (a rather dark book) and really needed something that might qualify as 'easy listening'. This book fit the bill.

I'll explain two objections that I read in reviews that almost kept me from downloading this book.

1. One review talks about the language in the book. I think this is because of two things. A) Swearing (F-bombs here and there) and B) the N-word.

The swearing is not overdone, it's all in keeping with the characters and certainly no worse than many other books I've heard on audible. But if you have a particular sensitivity to hearing the F-bomb a few times, then I suppose you might be disturbed.

There's no way around it. Hearing the N-word just makes you cringe. It's used in a character's dialogue. The character is a bigot fro the South. Guess what. They still exist and they say crap like this. (Hello, Paula Deen.) So I can understand the discomfort at hearing this word. These a**holes exist in real life so I suppose it's not a jump that they exist in books.

2. Another review talks about how the book makes fun of a religion. I think that reviewer is referring to some comments that Garrity's mother, Edna, makes about the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). She basically says something along the lines of how Mormon heaven is like a Holiday Inn (something like that - a hotel chain) and that there are different levels of heaven and if you convert enough people, you get on the concierge floor. There are also some comments about a sect that still practices polygamy.

I'll say this - I wanted something light hearted, easy to listen to, and had a decent dash of humor. This was perfect for that. The narrator is great, the characters are certainly colorful. It's not going to win any Pulitzer but I didn't want to listen to a Pulitzer. And for what its worth, I'm downloading the second book now. Good luck with your listen!

Lots of fun! Great start to the series

I am so glad that I stumbled upon this book! It was so much fun. I listened to the audiobook and Hilary Huber does a great job narrating. The story itself is interesting and the characters are great. Callahan is multi-faceted and her mother is a hoot. I will definitely be listening to the next book in the series. Well worth the audible credit but also worth reading if you don't do audiobooks.

Andrews can tell a funny story

This is the first Callahan mystery I have read and I think it carried the wit and southern character development of her other stories.

Wait for it to go on clearance!

Would you listen to Touch & Go again? Why?

No, the narrator's attempts to do the male voices were strained. They should have used a male to co-narrate given all the male parts. Her female voices were just as strained and way too exaggerated.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

A bit way too predictable to be interesting. The least interesting aspect was all the played out ridiculous family drama released in the middle of a hostage crisis. It was more like a page from a teen diary or a lonely pill popping housewife drama than anything. Way too much detailed description about meaningless subjects.

A good listen even with a fairly obvious mystery.

This is a kidnapping story that involves better police work than the mystery requires. First, I liked the two main law enforcement characters a lot and never thought of not finishing the novel. That immediately qualifies it a 3 star novel, though with its drawbacks I'd give it 2.5 if I could.

Close to half the novel is told in the first person of the kidnapped wife whose husband and daughter are also kidnapped with her. I found her extremely unattractive and droll. In fact, I found her husband an daughter's characters extremely under developed, to the point none of their actions made sense to me.

The narration was excellent with exception to two of the kidnappers, Elisabeth Rodgers had trouble with their gruffness.

This was a complicated mystery that I feel called for far more detail and in depth characters than the author was willing to provide. I was certain of the outcome early on, but finished just to be sure.

Interesting story line...

DD Warren was not a main character. That being said, the law enforcement characters were all interesting and likable. Even some of the villains were likable. I enjoyed the book. I reserve 4 stars and 5 stars for what I think are in my humble opinion excellent, top notch, edge of my seat, can't put them down books.

Love Penelope Keith and series, but not this one

I enjoy the Agatha Raisin franchise and think the choice of Penelope Keith as narrator is inspired, but this one is a disappointment. Is MC Beaton really a male who doesn't like his female characters, or females in general? And the deux ex machina of getting James out of his predicament was quite loathsome.

I hope the next one won't disappoint on either account.

Agatha is unpleasant

While the mystery part of this story was ok, if rather mundane, Agatha is an unpleasant character who is hard to like.

Agatha Raisin is one of a kind! Perfect choice for a reader, too! Excellent car book.

Interesting evolution of other characters

This is mainly another great chapter I'm the adventures of Agatha Raisin with all the good stuff we've come to love.

Many readers bemoan Agatha's unending fixation with James Lacey, and this volume does not resolve that. But Agatha's belligerence and endearingly human way of being stuck in her ways and blind to some things are a part of her charm. Those bear-like eyes are getting a clearer view in the mirror, little by little. Agatha's love life and complicated personality is the long game of the series.

What's special about this volume is we are given more depth and development of some our favorite supporting characters, particularly Sir Charles. The text gives us greater insight into their understanding of Agatha and really does enliven what could otherwise be a ponderous affair.

The narration is, as always, first rate. Penelope Keith is a gem.

Loved it!

I Love all theses books and Narrator is simply fantastic - I can't wait to listen to the rest of them.

Great Book

I love this series. I only wish that life was easier for Agatha. She needs a break. I'm hoping for good things to happen to her in future books.

The Best One So Far

Would you listen to Agatha Raisin and the Witches of Wyckhadden again? Why?

Yes. I've been reading this series in order, and have enjoyed each of the previous eight books, but this is the best so far. It combines hilarious physical comedy (not easy to do when working with a two-dimensional page), pathos, mystery, and moments of genuine suspense.

When Agatha loses her wig, finds the first body.

Penelope Keith is brilliant, she can do both male and female voices beautifully, has impeccable timing, and pronunciation.

Agatha Raisin is a complicated 'real' character. The author has created a woman with tragic faults and doesn't 'fix' them. Though Agatha has grown to be a better person, that growth is slow, realistic, believable. Agatha always makes the same stupid mistakes with men, because she follows the 'fault line' of the personality Beaton has created for her. These books are fun.

Too short

The first Agatha raisin books were longer, now they seem to get shorter and shorter, with the solving of the murder coming too quickly just before the end. Still good books, they just go by too fast.

Besides Agatha! Charles was on hand again when needed....I love it whenever Agatha has a should to cry on. He really is a great support to Agatha....I am glad this has never developed into an actual romantic relationship.

She is 'the' Agatha Raisin. No one can compare to her...she is fantastic. She does for Agatha what David Suchet does for Poirot!

I found this story enjoyable enough to listen almost straight through. Agatha is such a character--flawed but fearless. I like her even when she isnt likable.

Penelope Keith's narration makes the characters come alive. I have pictures of them in my mind which didnt match at all wih the filmed series.

My only problem was the recording itself.

Fun and Funny

Some of the most delightful characters are found in this book. I want more of them. The narration is wonderful. The story about Lois nearly tickled me silly.

FBI to the rescue.

I am huge fan of Julie Garwood's older books and I like her newer stuff, just not as much as I enjoyed her Highlander or Regency books. This book is good but I wouldn't say great. I didn't connect with the characters as well as I would have liked. I have a hard time when the main characters are lacking any flaws. One thing that annoyed me is that we never hear the stories being told about Nick and Tommy only that there are stories and that they were funny. Maybe she was going for heartwarming and not funny because I didn't laugh. Narrator was okay, the recording had a few instances where the sound would drop, it usually only last a couple of seconds.

No struggle here.

If you were following my pitiful reviews you will know I have had a few disappointing books. Been trying to decide what has been driving me up the wall. Maybe it is the narrators who just read it to me. Whoever this one was took the time to draw the picture of the voices with hers. Impressive. Really good book.

Great story!!!!!

I like the narrator when she does her women voices the men not so much, love Garwood and her stories this one as well as Mercy have a bite the story is suspenseful enough that keeps it interesting, yes I would recommend this to other people, I can even see this made into a movie.

I quit listening to this story because I could no longer take the narrator's voice. From the very beginning, it was like listening to an automated operator or Siri read a book to me. I stuck around for a few chapters because the story line was intriguing but I finally gave up.
