Truly Lethal

Do you like really bad action movies? Then there is a possibility this is for you. The majority, however, will find this really dire. It is one of the worst books I have ever read or listened to. The characterisation is that of a comic book and includes mad dwarves out to rule the world, a stereotypically ugly giant of a man, and an unsympathetic hero who is an amoral assassin. The plot (what there is of it) is nonsense in the extreme and involves a corpse which comes to life and is then killed again, blown up buildings killing hundreds and that army of circus dwarves pitted against a crime lord. The dialogue is supposed to be hard-bitten but laughably resembles that of a bad 50s b-movie. The whole thing would be funny if it didn't take itself so seriously. I can hardly believe something this awful was ever published. Does the 'Book 1' of the title mean there is more of this rubbish to come? For me the only good thing about it is the title = it really is lethal.

Loved this Book - Total Imersion

Would you consider the audio edition of Moon Over Soho to be better than the print version?

Well - I haven't read the hard copy but I do love that Jazz is used throughout the book - it adds so much to the performance and the "Soul" of the story.

What about Kobna Holdbrook-Smiths performance did you like?

The accents were spot on - love everything about the performance. If they changed readers - I may not listen.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved the "coming to consciousness" to the bigger and infinite world of Magic. I am also kinda geeky in that I loved the basis of the Magic in this book is based on Newton.

WARNING: Once you start book 1 -- before you know it -- you are on an addicted path!

Another amazing Peter Grant story

This is not only a terrific and creative series of stories: I can't be sure I'd like the books so much, were they not narrated by Kobna Holbrook-Smith. It's as though the author (Ben Aaronovitch) was channeling the narrator. His fit to the main character/narrator is uncanny. And of course, brilliant.

Very Entertaining

Although I did not enjoy Moon over Soho quite as much as Midnight Riot, I did find it quite entertaining and worth a credit. It certainly makes me hope that Audible will keep bringing us the audio versions as the author continues to add to the adventures of Peter Grant.

After the tragic events at the end of Book 1, Lesley May is indisposed throughout Book 2 and I think that's part of the reason I did not like this book as much. Peter needs the considered advice and more careful approach of Lesley to offset his inclinations to dive into trouble; without her, he does simply dive into trouble and I found his lack of sense a little aggravating. There are some semi-explicit sex scenes in this book that were not in Book 1 that I didn't really like - mostly I just wasn't as taken with the romantic interest as Peter and the author clearly were. (Although, without giving away anything, I will say I LOVED the scene where girl meets mother!) All said, I just wasn't as taken with Peter or the plotlines of Moon Over Soho as with Midnight Riot.

Not bad - but not her best

I do love to hear Victor Slezak read Sandra Brown books so it was a fine way to spend a rainy afternoon. It is not in the same league with many of her other books though.

A romantic thriller that kept me guessing all the way through. I really enjoyed this book. Never a dull moment.

A Mystery That Will Keep You Guessing...

This is a good mystery using flashbacks which develop the mystery little by little. Subplots involve betrayal between friends and typical family conflicts. Of course there is murder. The story ended very well with plenty of twists and turns along the way, especially in the last few chapters. The story held my interest throughout, wanting to know what happens next. The sexual content is minimum and not over the top, however, the central story revolves around child sexual perpetrators.... mostly older men having and paying for sex with minor girls Child abuse is one topic that I try hard to avoid in my recreational reading, and I was happy that the descriptive passages were limited.

The romantic portion of the story involves a couple who falls in love (in a love at first sight sort of way), but one of them is already in a engaged, ready-to-be-married relationship. This was not a typical boy meets girl love story. It was refreshing that Sandra Brown found a way to bring what could have been a typical romantic triangle to a conflicting point with interest and suspense.

Narrator Victor Slezak is one of the better narrators that I've heard. His voice is smooth which is a 'must have' for me in order to listen for 13 hours.

Exceptional listen. Loved it. Has all the usual twist and turns. Suspenseful. I hate when one of her books ends you get so involved with the characters you miss then . Narrator was good easy to follow and to listen to.

At first nothing unusual- but then it got great

At first I thought it is a normal Thriller, nothing unusual. Until about 100 pages- 150 pages in it got me and I was hooked. I love books with a plot in the end! Great book, I will for sure read 'Kalte Asche' as well.

Spoilt by awful narrator !

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I enjoyed this book although would not describe it as a "suspense" title - there was no element of "whodunnit" but overall quite enjoyed the story but as for the narration ?, well I very nearly did give up minutes in but am not one to give up that easily - she became slightly more bearable as it went on but the whole experience would have been greatly improved by a credible reader.

How could the performance have been better?

Having Sean Barrett maybe as the narrator.

Could you see Beyond Evil being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Good solid yarn but wrong narrator

Despite all the main characters coming straight from the 'gritty/disillusioned section' at Central Casting for Crime Writers, I enjoyed the story. Not entirely sure why because there's nothing new in there - but still a solid crime yarn.

I did wonder at the choice of narrator. Not that there's anything at all wrong with Ms Thurlwell. She has a very pleasant posh-girl's voice. She sounded a lot like Alice Archer come to think of it. But she was totally wrong for this book which is set in a small Lancastrian town and is primarily about two slightly grizzled Northern blokes. I think that a male narrator capable of doing the correct accents (definitely not non specific 'eey oop' Northern) would have added to the atmospheric quality of the story.

One final point-ette of no special significance: When you listen to a lot of books you become sensitive to repetition. I'm sure others will agree that they notice when authors appear to have words they overuse. In Mr White's case, it's variations on 'grimaced'.

I just couldnt even continue reading it which is very unusual for me. Not interesting. Maybe it gets better as it continues, but I really feel I gave it a fair shot.
